Peripheral neuropathy is a disease of the nerves within the extremities. It causes loss of the protective sensation to the feet (numbness); including pain, heat, cold, sharpness, and vibration. Ironically, neuropathy can also cause burning, tingling, and shooting pains. This is most commonly due to diabetes, but can also be caused by medications, genetic disease, exposure to heavy metals, trauma, chemotherapy, vitamin deficiency, and more. There are several treatments available for neuropathy depending on cause and symptoms. These include pain creams, medications that act on the nervous system, vitamin B complex supplement, electric nerve stimulation, laser therapy, and blood sugar control.

Swelling of the feet, ankles and legs, also called edema, is often caused by an abnormal build-up of fluids within the tissues of the lower extremities. Swelling of the feet and ankles is a common problem, particularly in the elderly population. It may be painful and cause ulcers (sores) or be asymptomatic. Because of the effect of gravity, swelling is particularly noticeable in the feet and lower legs. Swelling can be due to many conditions such as: poor circulation, DVT (deep vein thrombosis or clot), injury, pregnancy, lymphedema (blockage of the lymph system), medications, sitting or standing for long periods of time (airline flights), kidney disease, and cardiac disease. Treatment may include compression dressings, elevation, medications, wound care, and revascularization procedures.

There are many different surgical procedures for bunion deformities. In our office, your podiatrist will review your x-rays with you and determine the best treatment option for your specific condition, life style, and goals. Bunion surgery is performed by your podiatrist at either a hospital or surgical center. Patients go home the same day and follow up in the office weekly or every other week for x-rays and evaluation. Most of our patients are placed in a cast to protect the foot during recovery for an average of four weeks.

Semi-rigid orthotics provide foot balance for walking, running and participating in sports. Sometimes, different sports call for different types of semi-rigid orthotics. The typical semi-rigid orthotic is made of layered soft materials and reinforced with more rigid materials. Children are prescribed this type of orthotic to treatÂ flatfeet, in-toeing, out-toeing, and bunions. Athletes are often prescribed these orthotics to improve function and alleviate pain while training and competing. Construction workers or individuals who work on hard surfaces are often prescribed a well cushioned orthotic with a reinforced rigid supportive arch.
Gangrene
The risk of poor blood flow to the feet and legs also increases with age and can lead to further problems. Without proper circulation to the feet, healing may be delayed or even cause wounds and gangrene, a dangerous condition caused by critically insufficient blood supply to the foot.

Ingrown Toenails
Ingrown toenails have borders or sides that dig painfully into the skin, often causing redness, swelling or infections. They typically occur on the big toe but ingrown toenails can affect any of your toes. Keep in mind that if you have diabetes or another condition that impacts your blood flow, you are at a greater risk for developing complications surrounding ingrown toenails. If this is the case for you, it is important that you check your feet on a daily basis to ensure there are no issues.

Hammertoe Surgery
Able to go home the same day and follow up in the office weekly or every other week for x-rays and evaluation. Patients are able to bear weight and walk after hammertoe surgery but are advised to limit their activity for up to six weeks.

Skin Cancer
Skin lesions are areas of skin that are different from the surrounding skin. Most skin lesions are benign, such as freckles, moles, pimples, blisters, and rashes.Â But, it is critical to detect malignant skin lesions, such as malignant melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. The ABCDEs is a strategy for early recognition.
Corns
For painful corns or calluses, use a pumice stone or emery board to the thin the area. Apply moleskin or padding to provide comfort. Never cut a corn or callus, your podiatrist will do this for you.
Cyst
Ulcer
Ulcers are open skin wounds. Ulcers can be found on the feet and legs. They are most common with the diabetic population and those with vascular disease. Ulcers can be very slow to heal due to poor circulation, infection, pressure, increased blood sugars, poor nutrition, and neuropathy (nerve disease). With lack of sensation, something as simple as a splinter or cut on the bottom of the foot can turn into a serious health problem, such as bone infection, sepsis, and amputation. The most important part of treatment is off-loading or taking pressure and weight off of the ulcer. Treatment may also include wound cleaning and debridement (trimming away dead tissue), antibiotics, blood sugar control, hospitalization, consultation with a vascular specialist, and advanced wound care products such as grafts, growth factors, collagen, and negative pressure therapy. Those diagnosed with diabetes or vascular disease should have regular exams and routine foot care by their podiatrist to prevent ulcerations, infections, and amputations. Routine foot care includes examination of the lower extremities, foot care and hygiene education, and trimming of nails and calluses.
Calluses
Schedule an appointment with your podiatrist at least once per year for a diabetic foot exam.Â If you have foot problems then you should see your podiatrist as advised. Â If you have corns or calluses, your podiatrist can trim them for you. Your podiatrist can also trim your toenails if you cannot do so safely. Â Medicare covers routine palliative foot care and examination specifically for diabetic patients to prevent foot complications.

Inspect your feet regularly. Pay attention to changes in color and temperature. Look for thick or discolored nails (a sign of developing fungus), and check for cracks or cuts in the skin. Peeling or scaling on the soles of feet could indicateÂ Athleteâ€™s foot. Any growth on the foot is not considered normal.

E- Benign lesions appear the same after time. Malignant lesions change in size, shape, color, elevation, or any other trait. Any new symptom such as bleeding, itching or crusting point to danger.

Athleteâ€™s foot and fungal nails are the most common types of fungal infections of the foot. The fungus usually attacks the feet because shoes create a warm, dark, and humid environment which encourages fungal growth. The warmth and dampness of areas around swimming pools, showers, and locker rooms, are also breeding grounds for fungus. Other conditions, such as reaction to dyes or adhesives in shoes, eczema, and psoriasis, may mimic Athleteâ€™s foot. Fungal infections are treated with topical and/or oral antifungal medications, laser treatment, and good daily foot hygiene.

Although many people can manage their heel pain by incorporating rest, stretching, bracing, medicine or injections, some patients must undergo invasive surgical procedures with lengthy recovery periods. A revolutionary medical device called the TOPAZ MicroDebrider, is available, offering a quick, minimally invasive alternative for the treatment of tendons and fascia. This technology is rapidly being adopted by surgeons around the country specializing in sports medicine procedures. This procedure is done as an outpatient with light sedation. Recovery time is quicker than more invasive surgical procedures, averaging between one and three months. Ask your podiatrist if TOPAZ is right for you.
Physical Therapy
Our podiatrists will examine your feet and likely take x-rays to identify your specific condition. Occasionally, an MRI is ordered to provide more detailed imaging of your foot and ankle. Conservative (non-surgical) treatment for heel pain often includes stretching, appropriate shoe gear, icing, anti-inflammatories, custom orthotics, avoiding barefoot walking, night splints, physical therapy, steroid injections and/or MLS laser therapy. If conservative treatment fails or is deemed inappropriate for your condition, then surgical options are discussed.

Dr. Jehanzab Siddiqui was born and raised in the Northwest suburbs of Illinois. He attended Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science. He graduated from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science where he received his Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine. He completed his three year surgical residency at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County and Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Siddiqui is board qualified in foot and ankle surgery with American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and board certified with American Board of Podiatric Medicine. His interest in podiatry was piqued after seeing a podiatrist with an ankle sprain sustained while playing basketball. His personal interests include playing basketball, football, hockey, traveling and spending time with wife, family and friends. Dr. Siddiqui strives to provide excellent foot and ankle care to anyone in need.

Dr. David Charnota is a board certified Doctor of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. He treats all foot and ankle conditions both surgically and non-surgically, and has a special interest in pediatric flat foot conditions and elective surgery. Patients are frequently referred to him by physicians within the area and podiatrists come to him for advice and assistance in difficult cases. He is often a podiatrist to the other podiatrists.
Achilles Tendonitis
Whether you are a professional athlete or play sports just for fun, your feet take a lot of abuse throughout training and competition. For instance, in a mile run your feet hit the ground about 1,500 times, at a force three to four times your body’s weight. The demands put on your feet and lower limbs can lead to a wide range of conditions and injuries, includingÂ ankle sprains, torn ligaments,Â shin splints, Achilles tendonitis, heel pain, stress fractures, and more. Your running style, shoes, ground surfaces, and even minor limb length differences can contribute to injury. Some general common foot complaints among athletes include corns,Â calluses, blisters, Athleteâ€™s foot, and toenail loss.
Ankle Sprain
Ankle sprains are caused by a twisting injury or force on the ankle joint, often resulting in one or more ligaments of the ankle to be stretched or torn. Ankle injuries occur commonly while playing basketball, slipping on ice, and stepping incorrectly off of a curb. If not properly treated, ankle sprains can develop into chronic conditions. Symptoms include pain, swelling and bruising to the ankle and difficulty walking and participating in activities. X-rays are always taken in the office to rule out fracture and occasionally an MRI is ordered to evaluate the extent of injury to the ankle ligaments. Treatment includes rest, icing, stretching, bracing, MLS Laser therapy, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatories.
Bunions Problems
A bunion is a progressive foot deformity that results from mechanical imbalance and undue stress on the big toe joint. This leads to a bony prominence on the inside or top of the toe joint and drifting of the big toe, causing crowding to the smaller toes. Bunions themselves develop slowly and the amount of pain that they cause will gradually increase.Â

Flat Feet
The size and shape of your babyâ€™s feet change quickly during their first year. Since a babyâ€™s feet are flexible, too much pressure or strain can affect the shape of their feet. Itâ€™s important to allow your baby to kick and stretch his or her feet freely. Be sure that their shoes and socks do not squeeze their toes. Flat feet (fallen arches) seen during infancy is normal.

Heel Spurs
Achilles tendonitis is inflammation of the Achilles tendon, the largest tendon in the human body. This is generally caused by an overuse injury and is more common among athletes. Achilles tendonitis can also occur within the inactive population when other factors contribute, such as obesity, tight calf muscles and poor shoe gear. Symptoms include pain and swelling to the back of the heel and difficulty walking and participating in activities. Achilles tendonitis is generally slow to heal due to the tendonâ€™s poor blood flow. Treatment includes rest, stretching, icing, anti-inflammatories, compression, heel lifts, immobilization, MLS Laser therapy and physical therapy. If untreated, Achilles tendonitis can lead to tears and rupture of the tendon and heel spurs. This condition can be prevented with regular exercise, stretching and warm-ups before exercise to improve strength and elasticity of the tendon.

Here at Alpine Foot Specialists, our goal is to prevent complications due to vascular disease of the lower extremities, known as peripheral vascular disease (PVD). Therefore, we advise our patients with vascular disease to make appointments for routine foot screening and care every ten weeks. During these visits we examine patientsâ€™ feet and provide palliative foot care. Routine foot care includes nail, callus, and corn trimming, as well as, ingrown toenail treatment. This helps to prevent skin breakdown and infections.

Custom foot orthotics may be covered by your health insurance company. Some plans cover one to two pairs per year or may be unlimited. If this is the case, custom orthotics can be prescribed specifically for your work shoes and your athletic shoes. Once your podiatrist has diagnosed your foot condition and has prescribed custom orthotics, our office staff will help you through the insurance coverage process.

Plantar Fasciitis
There is a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel bone to your toes. If this band becomes inflamed or irritated, it will create a stabbing pain in your heel. This pain may be worse in the morning.
Podiatric Deformities
Soft orthotics are used to absorb shock, improve balance, and take pressure off painful areas of the foot. Soft orthotics extend the entire length of the foot, from the heel to the toes. Soft orthotics are prescribed forÂ diabetic patients,Â arthritic conditions, fragile skin, calluses, andÂ painful foot deformities.

Dr. Anna Gurrera is Board Certified in Foot Surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. She is highly trained in all aspects of surgical and non-surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. She is originally from Glenview, Illinois and is proud to be serving her community in the Northwest suburbs. After graduating high school, she enlisted in the United States Army. Through her training and travel, Dr. Gurrera gained invaluable experience that helped prepare her for a professional career in podiatry. After returning home, she served the Army Reserve while attending the University of Illinois Chicago, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. After completing her undergraduate studies, she attended Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in North Chicago, IL and obtained her Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine. She then completed a comprehensive three year podiatric medical and surgical residency program at Rush University Medical Center and NorthShore University Health System. In her free time, Dr. Anna enjoys crossfit training, boxing, kickboxing, running, biking, and traveling.
