Calcasieu Department of Public Works is a part of Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, which was founded in 1840. It provides planning and cost estimation services for the construction of roads, bridges, drainage systems and buildings. The department offers construction services for timber bridges and drainage culverts and inspection services for parish bridges. It conducts traffic studies, prepares budgets and reviews work orders, as well as oversees and controls expenditures. The Department of Public Works provides training and guidelines for the National Association of County Engineers and the Federal Highway Administration. The government agency features administration, animal service and adoption center, finance, fire protection, housing and human resources departments.
