On August 25, 2007 my husband and son went on the annual company camping and rafting trip. That night I received a call from my husband while they were in route to the closest emergency room. Our 5 year old had been pinned by a car door against a tree. His head and upper body had been squashed by the open rear door when the driver suddenly put the car in reverse and stepped on the gas. When the car moved forward my son’s head and chest were both white from lack of blood flow.

Correcting a small imbalance at birth or soon after can often prevent problems later. For example, ADD and ADHD have shown improvements in some studies. Dr. John Upledger, who developed CranioSacral Therapy, has worked with newborn babies to evaluate cranial base compression. Cranial base compression can occur with C-section deliveries or other difficult deliveries. Cranial base compression can compromise the Vagus Nerve, resulting in sucking, eating, digestive problems and irritability. These difficulties are often referred to as 'gastroesophageal reflux' in infants. When the cranial base is decompressed in these infants by a CranioSacral Therapist, these problems go away very quickly.

Radiation Therapy
If the Lymphatic System is damaged, it’s normal functions are compromised. If the Nodes are injured they cannot filter toxins from the system or produce Lymphocytes that fight infection. If the Nodes are removed this leaves the body fewer Nodes to fight disease. If the Vessels are damaged they can no longer transport Lymph through the system as they should. A limb or body cavity experiencing these problems is very prone to infection and cellulitis (inflammation of cellular or connective tissue).The filtering mechanism of the Lymph Nodes and the Lymphatic Vessels may be injured as a result of surgery, injury, infection, invading cancer cells, a congenital or acquired malformation, obstruction of the veins and damage due to radiation therapy. A common scenario that can lead to damage is cancer surgery. If there is cancer in the body its cells may enter the draining Lymphatic Vessels and be carried to other parts of the body. For the purpose of determining if cancer is present or has spread, Lymph Nodes are often removed for examination to determine if they are cancerous or not.

Lymphedema is a specific condition that responds to non-invasive therapy known as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD). Lymphadema is the accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the superficial tissues often caused by injury, scarring, excision and/or radiation therapy of the lymph nodes (for instance, post-mastectomy lymphedema due to breast cancer treatment).
