I have to rate Angela Floyd as poor, which is shocking when you hear a lot of people like this studio and they say they are ranked in the top 50 studios in the US. First, where did this ranking come from? I can't find anything that shows dance studios ranked by quality in the US. Was it by a magazine? The Dance Federation? My daughter danced here two years. The first year was pretty good and she loved her teacher. The second year her teacher seemed to be a surly college student. (not sure of her age or background as no bio was ever given but that is my impression) She was rude, rarely smiled, and did not seem to either enjoy working with young children (daughter was 8 at the time) and also did not seem to have any knowledge of how to work with young children. She yelled a lot and my daughter started to dread going. At the recital dress rehearsal, where you must drop your child off for 4+ hours at an auditorium, they promise to provide snacks. My daughter said they gave everyone a handful of cereal and a handful of pretzels. She was there from 3:30- until almost 9 pm. After paying for dance classes for 10 months, spending several hundred dollars on costumes, tights, shoes, etc.. Only the people who pre-register for the following year (this is in April) are allowed to purchase recital tickets the day they go on sale, everyone else must wait until the following day. So this forces anyone who does not register 5 months in advance for classes to sit in the back for the recital. Recital tickets are $20 per person, but one year they ran out of programs because they left them in huge stacks. So after spending $100 for my to see my child's recital, I didn't even get a program? Very unprofessional and I could add many more small examples. Even with all this I might have stayed, but the night of dress rehearsal my daughter burst into tears on the way home. This is not typical of her, she has an older brother and is tough! All year they had practiced a ballet routine with the teen age girls, which to an 8 year old is like a rock star! She was more excited about this than any other part of the recital. At the rehearsal, her teacher told her there weren't enough teens for her to have a partner, but every other girl had one. She was devastated and this is not ok to do to an 8 year old! I called numerous times to try to talk to someone, and no one ever called me back. I showed up early the night of the performance and talked to the office manager and the assistant teacher. They assured me that it was a mistake and would be fixed. Shockingly, they did not fix it. My daughter was the only young dancer during the performance without a teen partner. She still did great, but told me later she almost cried. Fortunately, one of the teens must be brighter than the instructors, because even though she was partnered with another child, she included my daughter in the end part! Even after all of that, no one ever called me to explain or apologize any of this. The whole situation was so bizarre because I still think maybe they are just stupid and not this blatently uncaring. I would be careful before assuming this is a quality studio. There are several other studios in Knoxville that in my opinion are much better with instructors that have college degrees in Dance and years of experience. But more important than that is that they care about each individual dancer which is not true of AFS.
We have been so pleased with our experience at Angela Floyd Schools! This is our fourth year at this studio, third year on one of their competition teams, and our first year joining the music school. The staff is organized and efficient in handling the day to day business of the studio. We have been so impressed with the teachers. They are qualified and come from dance backgrounds. They are very genuine and care for the child’s dance education. From day one, they have taught proper dance vocabulary for the dance movements. While the teachers bring a fun approach to teaching they also are serious in teaching proper technique. Our daughter started piano this year and we have been so pleased with her progress. The one-on-one experience with her teacher has been priceless. The teacher is so engaging and each week brings a contagious excitement under which our daughter has thrived. So, if you are looking for a studio to call home, look no further. You will not be disappointed.
Our daughter has been a student at Angela Floyd's for 6 years now and we could not be any happier with the way everything has gone. Our daughter has loved every single teacher that she has had...in her words, they are "AWESOME!" We've had several friends leave AFSD and they always tell us, I don't know why we did that. They talk about how well organized that AFSD is compared to the new studio that they are at. We agree with there assessment. It is a well organized machine and they are always emailing us and letting us know about upcoming events and things like that. Our daughter gets so much out of her studio time that when she gets home, she continues to dance, working on what she learned in class. We ask her why and she says that the teachers challenge me, so I want to get better. To us that is the sign of a studio that has teacher who know what they are doing.
This is our first year as members of Go! Contemporary. We have over the past 5 years enjoyed their story telling performances. Unbelieveable the caliber and talent. My daughter auditioned this year. The process of the audition was professional. My daughter experienced a true audition. We were pleased she was selected for the apprentice group. The time/talent is beyond spectacular. This nonprofit dance company is bringing amazing dance to Knoxville and surrounding areas. To watch is amazing. To observe my child go thru the process, the training - breath taking to say the least. So excited to watch the show in Oct at the Clarence Brown Theater then the February show at the Bijou! The gala before the show in February is a must attend. New York in Knoxville is the only way to describe! Talent beyond belief. So happy and proud to be a part of it!
I have three daughters that dance at Studio Arts. They have been students for 8 years and the quality is unbelieveable. The dancers learn the art. The May performace is beyond spectacular at the TN Theater! It is a professional display of talent from the youngest of young to the most talented high school dancers anywhere. The office staff is organized and on it - they know you by name. The instructors teach the art and the kids talk the talk/dance the dance. The artistic director is Broadway. East TN is very fortunate to have Lisa Hall McKee and Studio Arts!
My daughter has been dancing with Studio Arts for the past 5 years. The teachers have instilled a love of the art of dance and helped her grow as a dancer . Ms. Lisa is an amazing guiding force behind it all . Each May, at the end of the year performance, the dancers show how much they have learned and grown over the year. I am always amazed and moved by the choreography. If you are looking for a dance studio that will encourage your dancer and be welcoming to your family, Studio Arts for Dancers is where you want to be.
Studio Arts is the best dance school in Knoxville. My daughter has been dancing there for 6 years. The instructors are knowledgeeable and kind! They work hard to maintain the positive self image for the students and encourage them to be successful in all areas, not just dance. The show at the end of the year is not just a recital it's a full fledged show. It's amazing! The girls learn to be graceful and creative and carry that out of the studio into other areas of their lives. Great Value TOO! FANTASTIC!!!!!!
I have three dancers who have been at Studio Arts for Dancers since August 2004. We came from a different studio because I was looking for a studio that taught excellent technique with a performance flair. This studio has both and has worked well with my three vastly different children. The classes are professional and their performances excel. If you have a student that desires an excellent classical and/or modern technique, then I would highly recommend Studio Arts for Dancers.
My two girls have been dancing at dancers studio for years and years. They absolutely LOVE it. The staff is very proffesional and appropriate for each age level. Dancers Studio embraces creativity and the joy of dance and being exceptional is truly projected there. Although the teachers can be strict, they truly create strong and amazing dancers. We will definitely stay with the studio, because we and many others believe its the best studio in Knoxville.
A five star experience for both the audience and the performers. My daughter is beginning her second year with GO! and we couldn't be more pleased! It is amazing to see how much the dancers grow in just one year with this fantastic company. The performances incorporate the techniques of ballet, pointe, contemporary ballet, modern, jazz and tap. If you haven't seen a GO! production yet, don't waist another minute!
