When going to a BBQ Resturant fir the first time I like to try at least three different meats. At High Cotton I sampled the pulled pork, brisket and chicken. The brisket was by far the best selection of all and it was good at best. The chicken was moist but probably because it was under cooked and still had red showing near the bone. The pork had little flavor unless you doused it with sauce. If you want eastern style BBQ there are several other establishments that are much better on the island.

We were 6 people, 3 generations, and everyone loved this place. We went 3 times and it was very consistent. Across our whole party, we ordered ribs, pulled pork, and fried chicken. All the sides were good too. The outer banks is pretty expensive and this place offers a reasonable alternative that is really good.

I ALWAYS go to High Cotton when I am on the Outer Banks. The owner is a staple at the restaurant and always greets the customers and strikes up any ole conversation. The food is simple, but do not let that fool you, it is some of the best BBQ around. And fahgetabout the value, lunch plates for under $5, it is a steal. Better hurry to High Cotton because when that Hilton opens up across the street, you will have to wait for a table.

If you are looking for classic southern BBQ at its best you will find it here. This restaurant has a comfortable, and simple, dining room. It also does a large takeout business. Everything is good - from ribs to chopped BBQ to chicken to slaw to the Chess pies. Will, the owner, is an experienced local restaurant owner (he first owned the Rundown Cafe), and takes great care in getting BBQ right. You can't go wrong. Takeout for a crowd is a specialty.
