My wife and I ate here for our second wedding anniversary.
I ordered the salmon and she ordered the rib eye steak. Both of our meals were frankly terrible. The salmon was the worst I have ever tasted, it had a very strong fishy flavor, and I left most of it untouched on my plate. The sides (mashed potatoes and broccoli) were also disappointing and I left some of them on my plate as well.
My wife's rib eye steak was not a particularly high quality cut of meat and it had more tendons and grissle than I would expect when paying so much for a steak. The real tragedy was the entire steak was covered in teriyaki sauce. Yes, that's right. They covered a steak in teriyaki sauce. It is literally as bad as your imagination will allow you to believe. A large portion was left untouched on the plate when we left.
Let's just say it had probably been over twenty years since either of us has left any food on any plate prior to our visit to Houston's.

I got to Houston's with my friends at least a few times a month. They have a good happy hour, and good food. If you go with a large group to have dinner, be prepared to wait. The hostess will try to accommodate you as fast as possible, but i suggest you grab a drink and prepare yourself for an hours wait. I was there this past Saturday and it was quite busy, but the services was still good. Overall, I am happy with this place!

A large group of us arrived at Houston's. Were told that it would be a 2 hour wait. A bit long, but worth the wait, since we were all in town and made the extra effort for all of us to take cabs from our downtown hotel so we all could enjoy a wonderful dinner with old friends, as Houston's was always the place we would go when we all gathered in KC. After waiting over 1 hour and 45 minutes, the staff member at the bar quipped ""we can no longer serve you"". The service was slow, at best, as we had to track someone down for each and every order, so I have no idea how someone could be over served as they claim, as there was one person who had just ordered his 3rd drink, a 250 lb. male A bit shocking to the majority of us, as we had been sipping either the same drink the entire time or drinking tonic/ice water. After speaking with management and trying to understand why this happened, as I worked in the restaurant industry, there are ways to handle a situation like this, and trust me, this is not it. To add insult to the entire situation, after we complained our tables were suddenly open, after were told it would be another 30 minutes, BUT nobody would be served alcohol, including those of us who had been drinking water/tonic for the last hour plus. We told them that after the way we were treated that we not eat then, nor ever in their restaurant again. We then walked down to the Capital Grille did end up having a have a wonderful meal and paid our $700 plus bill with pleasure as we had a wonderful meal and the staff was outstanding. I have eaten at Houston's with family and friends for over the past 20 years and will gladly not step foot in Houston's again.

This is a great place to sit down and enjoy American food at its best. Nice middle-age crowd (but sometimes families bring the rug-rats and that is a downer, so don't go prior to 7pm). The plaza is fantastic and this is a great place to finish the day of shopping.
PS. The user MrnMrsRowe... they blow(e)... *snicker* :p

In reference to the previous review, Houston's is not a bar. It has a bar, but it's definitely not a bar. The dining room has subdued lighting in the evening, and never seems loud, even when the place is full. The comfy booths seem private, which makes this a nice spot for dinner with your significant other. The menu, while not too diverse, is fairly solid, and the steaks are great. Service was a bit lacking during my last visit but is generally above average.

My husband and I love to get away for romantic nights at Houstons! The strip steak is to die for and if they don't have it on the menu just ask. The service has always been attentive but not annoying. The only con is that there is usually a long wait but your on the Plaza so you can go and explore.

My wife and I have been dining at Houston's on the Plaza for 10 years of our 13 year marriage. We have had anything from a Great Steak & Prime Rib! dinner to a simple salad for a quick lunch (filling). I dont understand how Houston's can go unannouced on a Top 10. Best, steaks, spinach & artichoke, salads and serviced dinnersssss, we don't mind paying $60.00 for. For the money and quality of food and service I would recommend Houston's to a out-of-town guest above all others.
all thought Houstons has a myriad of different dishes to suite the taste of every one, we are talking about steak and bar none Houstons serve the best Prime Rib dinner any where . I've tried almost all of the others and Houstons has the best Prime Rib of all of them.
If you want great mouth waterimg Prime Rib Houstons is the only place worth goining.
