I heard about Grinders West, in Kansas City, from The Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," and although it's a cool and casual place to hang out and drink an array of great beers, when it comes to the food, it passes creative ville but falls short of reaching flavor town.

I usually love this place but you can have a bad expereince here. The food it better than most but not stellar and depending on your server or waitress, the way you're treated can be the best expereince you've ever had or the worst. My recent trip was by far the worst I've ever had thanks to miss red lipstick!! If you hate your job and your life, don't take it out on others. Find a new career path that you can embrace, like stripping. This way you never open your mouth and no one cares if you're serving with a smile.
My husband and I have been looking all over town for a great cheesesteak and finally found it here..... with the welcome surprise of pizza by slice. Great beer choices on tap. Bang for the buck is great, with several well priced daily specials. Wait staff isn't that great. Our waitress took forever and wasn't very friendly, didn't crack a smile all night. Atmosphere is cool with local artist displaying their works on the walls. A bit loud but we like the music. Give the Philly 5 stars.

I came to grinders for the first time tonight, and as I type I am still sitting here. But we are here for a beer tasting, it all started off very well. We ordered chicken wings at 8pm and at 9:15 we still did not have them. The waitress obviously forgot about our order which is not why I am upset. When I asked about the status of our food the wings were on our table within 3 minutes. Reluctantly we bit into one and sure enough it was still nice and frozen on the inside. When I again flagged the waitress down and notified her she told me she would have them warmed up. That from a health standpoint is not acceptable!! Then when I asked her to take the food off of our bill I was told I was unpleasant and ungreatful. All and all Leah was the most unacceptable server and come to find out manager that I've ever expirenced. I was a server for many years and I am sure I would have been fired if I would have spoken to a customer like that. I am very disappointed with the outcome of my expirence and I will not be returning. I paid my mandiory 18% gratuity and not a penny more.

If you are interested in waiting a very long time for very little service from servers who are more interested in posturing as hipster pin-up girls than actually, you know, WAITING on you, then this is a great place. Yes, the menu is interesting, but the product is mediocre at best. There are tons of places in this city that would love your business. The folks at Grinders could care less, even when it's a slow night.

Okay, I walked in with a colleague and we both wanted the Philly Steak but were also admiring the pizza. Low and behold they were able to satisfy both cravings with their delicious Philly Steak Pizza. And oh yeah, we added the Chili Bomb to the middle, well worth it. Crazy messy but amazing. I will be back on my next trip to KC, but will go after work this time b/c they have a great outdoor music venue and excellent beer selection. Very highly recommended.

While I'll admit that I enjoy Grinders pizza pie and think they have one of the best pepperoni, sausage and mushroom pizzas around...I'm rating this place from a food perspective because of it's Philly Cheesesteak. Now if you don't know Grinder's and haven't been there, you're mising out on a great little place that is in the Crossroads and puts on concerts like Black Crows, Joss Stone, George Clinton, Ween, Ziggy Marley, I could go on and on from a music perspective but we're here about food. I'm just saying if you don't like food..the music is enough to draw you there. Now...back to the Philly, they do it up right, now you can get a nice piece of provolone or swiss but I'm talking about classic yellow cheese and not just ANY yellow, I'm talking about Kraft Cheeze Wiz yellow. This meal isn't going to be pretty ladies nor was it meant to be, you'll be dripping in cheesey meat sauce from finger to finger licking goodness once the flow of peppers, onions, mushrooms and beef saute'd wonderfullness melts all over that yellow cheese spread. Just order the Philly (half or whole) with the ""Wiz"" and the ""Works""....mmmm...got my taste buds flared up just thinking about it.
I'll see you down there...
