Zion United Church of Christ is all about mission and community...we love to serve others and gather for worship and fellowship. Many of our members have been here their entire lives ; for some that's over 90 years and for others their journey is just beginning. Hospitality, friendship, community service, learning, worshiping together are just a few of the core values here at Zion. In a world that is moving at the speed of light Zion is a place where you can slow down and take the time to reconnect with family, freinds and neighbors. Oh, one more thing, we value questions here. There are no questions that are not welcome here. Furthermore, we don't claim to have all the answeres but together we try to live into the questions as a community of sojourners. Zion United Church of Christ's historical roots go all the way back to Germany. Thousands of German immigrants came to the American frontier in the early years of the nineteenth century. Many of those settled in small communities along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. Those who brought religious traditions with them established congregations for worship and the transmission of the faith to the their children. The Evangelical Synod of North America was established in 1877. In the Evangelical Synod, faith and life came together. Word and Sacrament were accompanied by acts of charity. The faith of a grateful people gave birth to schools, hospitals, homes for the elderly and for children, many of whom continue to serve to the present time. In 1934 the Evangelical Synod united with the Reformed Church in the United States to form the Evangelical and Reformed Church. And then in 1957 the Evangelical and Reformed united with the Congregational and Christian Church to form the current United Church of Christ. Zion UCC was officially started in midsummer of 1880 when a small group of German immigrants began worshiping in a Methodist Church at 7th and Minnesota in Kansas City, Kansas. From these humble beginnings Zion Church would go on to occupy three different church buildings in Kansas City, Kansas. Today we are located at 2711 N. 72nd St., KS 66109 Kansas City Like all immigrant congregations eventually the members are assimilated into their new environment. Today Zion UCC is in transition...proud of it's heritage and yet cognizant of an ever changing culture and pluralistic society. Zion is in the process of reinventing itself with the hopes and dreams of living the gospel for another 125 years in Kansas City, Kansas.
