National Car Rental Waikoloa has ruined my honeymoon. My new husband and I are currently stranded and unable to get into the car or start it because the battery in the key fob has died. There is no actual key in the fob, and the ignition is a push button to start and stop. We called National earlier this week and their response was they will waste a whole day driving a different car out to us when we have spent thousands on tours and activities because it is our honeymoon. We tried our best to make do with a faulty key fob and it finally died and we are unable to get in and thus even start it. We just called right now and they said “oh we can’t do anything call tomorrow”. We have activities planned for tomorrow. The office location is 45 minutes away. They also won’t refund or even discuss compensation. Do not rent from National Car Rental. We had switched to them after renting from Enterprise in Maui (easily the best customer experience we’ve had in renting cars) based on a family review and we regret that decision.

There are two Enterprise locations in Kailua Kona, one being at the airport and one being in town accessed by one-way $30 cab ride. No shuttle is available to town. The airport location is obviously more convenient for fly-ins. However we found that the cab ride resulted in a one-week car rental savings substantially greater than the two-way cab fare and for us, well worth the effort.Enterprise staff were very welcoming, and gave recommendations on shopping and dining that proved very helpful. They applied a USAA account discount to our rental cost, which we weren't even aware was available. They weren't overly aggressive on insurance options, and offered an upgrade to a convertible at a rate we couldn't refuse. All in all, a very pleasant entry to our vacation. For a first-time Fort Mustang convertible user, the operation orientation might have been a little more thorough, but we ultimately figured things out with a pioneer spirit and little fumbling around. And the inside of the windshield needed a good cleaning for into-the-sun and night driving. But we thoroughly enjoyed the wind-in-your-hair feeling of a convertible (at least my wife did because she has hair), and the top-down view of Hawaii can't be beat.Incidentally, the price of gas in Hawaii is very California-equivalent, or even more depending on location. However if you're driving a lot, as we did, and happen to be a Costco member, the short drive to Costco north of town is well worth it. We were able to make a round-trip drive to anywhere on the island on a single fill-up.The drop-off at the end of our stay was very easy, and the Enterprise desk even called a taxi service they use, which offers a reduced price to Enterprise customers. We had a wait of less than 10 minutes for the cab.In-town Enterprise was a very good experience, and we would certainly recommend them to others.
Everyone was terrific, from the shuttle bus driver to the counter agent to the return agent. Got a great car and had no problems with anything. I'm an Emerald Club member and would use National again at Kona, for sure.
I have rented from Enterprise solely for over 20 years. My recent rental in Kona, Hawaii was absolutely the worst car experience I have EVER had in a rental. The car was a Dodge Dart. The worst car ever made I'm pretty sure. First off the car which was "no smoking" policy reeked of hideous cigarette smoke for the entire week we drove the car, the car drove like a lumber wagon, interior noise level from road noise was almost unbearable, every little bump you drove over sounded like the front end of the car was going to fall out, It was and is just a terrible quality car. BUT of course the service level was excellent from the rental staff, they did credit us with a tiny 5% off for the bad experience we endured.
Pick-up and drop-off was fast, quick and easy! On lines and very friendly service. This made our trip to the Hawaii big island that much more relaxing. Mahalo!
Fantastic customer service. Quick and accurate check in and out both. Would def rent from them again!!
Great customer service. Took great care in getting us a good car. They were polite and helped us when we returned and needed to run fast to catch our plane.
I booked my car on Orbitz for $200. When I got to the rental car location in Kona, the agent tried to charge me an additional $1000 for the CAR I HAD RESERVED and had already paid for. They refused to rent a car to me at 9 PM at night without me paying an additional $575. They told me my $200 from Orbitz was a deposit and that it would come off my card, which it didn't. So, I ended up paying 4 times what I should've paid and they refuse to give me a refund or a credit
Because I booked through AutoSlash.com (which I highly recommend for rental car booking) I was able to get the exact vehicle that I wanted for an outstanding price! When I arrived, it turned out that there had been a mix-up in the booking and the particular "class" of vehicle that I had booked did not include the exact vehicle that I wanted (I booked an SUV, but I should've booked an off-road SUV because I wanted a Jeep Wrangler). But there was nothing to worry about because the customer service was excellent and they put me into a Jeep Wrangler for the same price as a regular SUV very quickly! Thank you National, you helped make my trip very memorable!
They were friendly, efficient and quick and never tried to push extra's. I was in and out in minutes, with 2 couples in front of me.
