Primary Care
A child who has experienced a concussion, traumatic brain injury, or bump to the head should she be seen by a pediatric developmental optometrist, in addition to their primary care physician.
Emergency Care
A concussion often causes changes to vision and to visual processing. Most of these changes are not detected through an exam with your childâ€™s primary care physician or emergency room physician. While it is extremely important for your child to be seen by a primary care physician or emergency room physician, it is also critical to be seen by a pediatric eye doctor after experiencing a concussion. Following a concussion, children often experience slight changes in vision and/ or perception which can cause headaches, fatigue, changes in visual acuity, and changes in the way the eyes take in and process information (learning). With proper monitoring, attention, and treatment, some of the negative effects caused by a concussion or TBI can be corrected.

Myopia significantly increases the risk of developing sight-threatening eye diseases later in life, such as cataracts, glaucoma, retinal detachment and macular degeneration. The higher your child’s myopia, the greater the risk.

Vision therapy is often and effectively used for strabismus (commonly called esotropia or exotropia). If you have eyes that do not properly work together, you may have had eye surgery. Unfortunately for many, eye surgery is not always effective in treating strabismus. Many find that after surgery their problem still persists.Once binocular vision is obtained through vision therapy, the chance of the eyes drifting again decreases. By using specifically designed vision therapy procedures, it is often possible to control eye teaming and produce depth perception without surgical intervention.

In addition, there are many serious health problems such as retinal detachment, cataracts, diabetes, and retinal cancer, which can only be detected only through a comprehensive eye exam with an eye doctor such as an optometrist at The Solution Center.
Eye Exam
Children should have their first eye exam before their first birthday (and great news-it is FREE through our participation in Infantsee). Unless there are concerns, we recommend their first exam should be when the child is between 9 and 12 months to be most effective. After the first exam, annual exams are recommended to ensure that your child’s eyes are being closely monitored for any changes as they develop and grow!

Although vision problems are common with autism, they are often overlooked. Often, autistic behaviors, such as: poor eye contact, looking through or beyond objects, extreme aversion to light, unusual reaction to visual stimuli are visual disorders which can be treated through individually designed and applied vision therapy.
