Best moving company Great American Van Lines No one likes to move. It's exhausting, time consuming, expensive: you only hope your stuff gets where it needs to go and that no one loses an eye in the process. Apparently after deregulation of interstate moving companies, many con artist/fly-by-night companies emerged to take advantage of unwitting consumers. The horror stories range from the movers refusing to give a hard estimate, then holding your stuff hostage for an exorbitant amount of money, to outright stealing, to just bad form and breaking your stuff to bits. You will find many of these companies on the net. I requested a quote from movers.com, and got about 5 responses, all hard sell salespeople who refused to actually send someone out to give a written estimate. Because I had received what I thought was a low estimate from one of these companies, I booked a move with them. After reading epionions, I realized I needed to book with a more reputable company. The trouble with reviewing a national frachise type company is that the office of"Put YOur Name Here" Moving company in Idaho, more than likely is very different from one in Wisconsin. I was leery of Van Lines, because initially, I read some less than favorable reviews of the franchises as such in other locations around the country. I canceled with the original moving company, and called Great America Van Lines very last minute. They were so accommodating right from the beginning and sent an estimator named Jason over within 24 hours (they really squeezed me in-don't try this at home!). Jason gave me a written estimate that read "not to exceed". For an interstate move from Nc to los angeles CA two bedroom townhouse crammed full of stuff, some packing/materials the quote came to $4700 I was so shocked that the amount was around what all the other "never heard of you" moving companies. Today two packers (one who has packing experience for 20 years) arrived right on time at 8 a.m. with the driver and two movers arriving in a HUGE truck shortly thereafter. I asked the packers to pack some additional things, which they didn't mind to do, as long as I acknowledged that I would pay them for doing so. They three movers (including 1 driver) went to work clearing out my place and by 2 p.m. they were basically finished, and just adjusting things on the truck. I bought them all breakfast, made sure they had plenty of bottled water on hand, and tipped each of the movers 40/ a piece,(they were very very appreciative). I plan to tip the driver more when my things finally arrive and of course if no one loses an eye, which so far, no one has. So my stuff is off to NC . The movers were very professional and the process was as decent as a move can be, considering the process is not fun in general. So far I recommend Great American Van Lines whole heartily. I will write part 2 when my stuff finally arrives in a week or so. I was able to pay with a credit card over the phone, which is wonderful because of course you can earn travel rewards!
I have recently used your company for my move from Cleveland Ohio to Fort Lauderdale FL. I want to recapture my experience for you so you can know how impressed I was with my service. I originally was speaking with Nathan and because of his persistence (and patience) he won my business. He was not overly pushy but answered any and all questions I had. He was patient with me as I did not know my exact move date due to a hiring process I was involved in. He never got short or impatient and that was a very good tactic for me. Once the move date was set, the moving truck came to my villa within the window of time that he said it would. I also got a call from Koba the day before to confirm this. On the day of the move, Koba pulled up in front of my house, hopped out of the truck, walked toward me, shook my hand and introduced himself. All the while he kept good eye contact. This immediately gave me confidence and assurance that I was dealing with a professional company because Koba himself was professional. Koba first sat down with me to explain the way the move was billed and that the quote was for 1400 cubic feet. He could see that I would exceed that and explained to me how that would work. He went over each page of the contract with me explaining it in a way I could understand. He did not rush me even though time is money. It seemed more important to him that I was able to understand what he was explaining to me and that I understood the process. This is huge from a customer service standpoint. Once the paperwork was done, the three men, including Koba starting the loading process, but not before Koba had me come out to the truck to see that there was nothing in the truck already except for some packing supplies. Once again, this speaks of integrity and he was transparent throughout the process. After reading many horror stories about moving companies, I found this to be very refreshing and comforting. It built my confidence in Great American Van Lines. Honesty goes a long way in today's world. One the other end, the truck arrived on time after I got to the apartment. Perfect timing. Koba got out and immediately got to work bringing the boxes into my apartment. He did have a local helper on this end but in all my life, I have never seen anyone work as hard as him. He is very focused, diligent, and professional. He is a good organizer, administrator, implementer, and communicator and is wise beyond his years. The way he deals with and interacts with people is incredible. Koba is, in my opinion, one of the most valuable assets in your company.
From the get go, Great American Van Lines was helpful beyond our belief, we had planned to move from Philadelphia back to Washington midsummer. We made all the normal decisions, started to plan and pack. We called all the usual suspects in relation to our transportation. And found that the cost involved in driving a truck was just too expensive. I called the transport and storage places and found that most of the quotes were UN realistic, either too high or WAY to low. When I started to scratch the surface the “fine print” came up and the cost rose considerably. With some googling we found this company and started to inquire. Pretty much all the companies have the same deal. At pick up they disassemble, pack it, charge you for the footage you use. I found that the transport rates were vast. However when I finally got around to Great American Van Lines a gentleman named Nathan answered my call, He was courteous, and up front. We discussed my needs and instead of throwing numbers at me he asked me what needs were. After several phone calls and price shopping we went with Nathan and Great American Van Lines. They weren’t the cheapest however the forthright honesty that Nathan displayed in his calls instilled confidence with our needs. We set a date and got a price…. Within that month we had made several changes to our transport needs, we changed delivery cities and pick up times over a half dozen times. The professionalism that was extended to us was amazing, plus the price quoted did not change. Over the next several weeks we had to maneuver our move due to our work schedules, again this did not phase Great American Van Lines. Move day arrives, a driver arrives in the AM, HE opened up the truck and I was happy to see a very well-manicured trailer and a clean sturdy loading ramp that was easy to use. Our load up was quick, easy and when it came down to it, we actually used less space than was originally quoted. I don’t think I have ever experienced a move so simple and easy over the 15 moves that I have done in my life. This was as easy and honest as it gets. Great American Van Lines will be used again by my family when our needs arise.

From the very first estimate, to the packing, to the final completion of the move, Great American Van Lines was SO professional, polite, efficient and pleasant to deal with all the many demands I had! I was extremely impressed with the high quality and affordable service they provided, and they worked really hard to fit within my tight budget everything that I could possibly need for this move! Every single employee I encountered, from customer service to the actual movers, were always so nice! I'm completely not used to that with a moving company. I'm a veteran mover and have never moved without something breaking - not this time! Everything arrived in one piece and in such great shape! When they arrived, they were professional, not just on time, but arrived early and didn't mind that I was slightly grumpy from accidentally packing my coffee maker! They really listened to me and assured all my worries and alleviated any concerns that I had. They really took good care of us and were super affordable. I can not stop raving about how good they were and how they took care of us during this extremely stressful time. They dodged the children and the pets, and the weird packing system I have, and accommodated us for everything. I was so wowed. Usually at the end of a move, I'm vowing to never move again, but this time, I know I've found the moving company that we will use for a long time. In conclusion, I am going to hire Great American Van Lines for my next move and I know it will be just as good experience as last time. I highly suggest using them as your moving service, you will not be disappointed! They are affordable, budget friendly, friendly and super professional. I researched local movers here in town for a upcoming move from here in Clifton New Jersey to LA California and while doing so I came across a lot of brokers and movers who just seemed to have the old car sales tactics on the phone conversations between me and them while getting estimates for pricing on this relocation I was planning to CA. After doing some more research on the industry I came up with the idea of just having a major company such as Great American Van Lines who is here local to have a representative come to the house and give me a visual estimate which would be guaranteed to me in writing. I did just that and had Great American Van Lines come out and give me an estimate and they came up to my house to provide me with an onsite estimate, the Person David who came out was very polite and seemed to be a very honest and well-rounded guy who I could trust with my belongings on a trip of roughly 3000 miles. As for the pricing it was much cheaper than the previous companies I spoke to over the phone.They showed up on time and the pickup went accordingly as planned when making my reservation with Dana the sales rep, She got everything handled for me and made sure I was fully aware of all the cost associated with the move and anything else important I would need to be informed of prior to getting a move like this done.. Delivery was as I expected but the total bill surprisingly was less than what Dana and David had originally quoted me for on this move, They did say initially that this could happen but I didn't think so and was totally happy when they actually told me it was about $405 cheaper, No damages and over all service was very pleasant. If I had a chance to recommend a mover to any friend or family member out of NJ it would be this company. Big Thanks to David/Dana! Job well done guys! ;)
I hired Great American Van Lines for a full service move on August 28th, after having such a great experience in January with their service. In Maryland, the loaders arrived promptly, and worked without a break until the truck was ready to leave for California. They did such a great job loading, that I was able to load furniture in addition to the boxes I had planned to move. The workers had all of the necessary equipment to load my possessions safely and securely. The truck was due in Oakland on Saturday, September 4th, at 9AM. On Friday, the driver called to say that he had arrived. He delivered the truck early on Saturday. The unloaders arrived early, before their scheduled starting time, so that they could begin work promptly. They did a great job with a complicated unloading sequence, depositing boxes and furniture to 6 different places in the house. NOTHING was broken, even poorly packed glassware (poorly packed by me!). The loading process was so professional that all of the items arrived in perfect shape. Throughout the process, the central office called several times to make sure everything as going well, on both ends of the move. Then, afterwards, they called again to make sure that I was satisfied with my moving experience. Although I had received cheaper quotes from other companies, I hired Great American Van Lines because of the great experience I had in January, because GAVL does not charge by weight, and because it was a private truck - none of my belongings were mingled with other households. I would heartily recommend GAVL! I have had two great experiences in a row, and would not hesitate to use them again.
I want to say for as much hassle as I went through finding a moving company, and being worried about the results I was going to get I was so happy with Great American Van Lines. I called Great American and spoke to Nathan who was very helpful in explaining everything. At one point during our phone calls, he even made himself available to me when he was on vacation/ not at work. He was very kind and helped with every aspect or question that I had. My movers arrived right on time for pick up. I was amazed that I was able to put my feet up and watch them go to work. They carefully made sure EVERYTHING was wrapped so that it wouldn't get damaged; desks and dressers had cardboard corners on them to add cushion--everything was wrapped in drop cloths then wrapped again with tight wrap to hold the cloths in place. ALL of my boxes were labeled with my name and with numbers so that they knew how many pieces/items I had--SO ORGANIZED. They handled my sixty-inch flat screen with such care and grace. When all was done, I was happy to pay and tip them. They were willing to work with me on a drop off date, which was also super helpful as I wasn't going to be in my new home for a week past pick-up. On the morning of delivery, I only stumbled with them slightly as the driver hit some traffic and was an hour or two past his ETA. But that was no biggie as it gave me some more time to sleep in. Everything was just as seamless with delivery. They put things back together and put all my boxes and furniture in the rooms I instructed. VERY SATISFIED CUSTOMER OVER ALL!
super-friendly, professional movers After listening to friends' experiences with other moving companies and reading reviews on the internet, I was almost contemplating about selling all my stuff and moving with just 2 bags and buying everything new :-p. Then I read about Great American Van Lines. I used Great American Van Lines for my move from Jersey city to North Chicago. In one word, the experience was amazing! Right from the point when David stepped inside my apartment to do the survey and prepare an estimate till the point my stuff was shipped and assembled in IL - they were exceptional! I had a small 1-bedroom apartment to move from, store the stuff in storage (till I finalize my new home in IL) and then move into new apartment in IL. 1. The entire staff was super-friendly, professional and knew their job well. 2. The move-to apartment was on 3rd level and no elevators 3. 30-days storage was provided at no extra charge. 4. I had to advance my moving day by a week, with a 2 day notice and they accommodated!! I had researched on a lot of other movers. Some refused to survey in person, while others sent an agent to survey, while the estimates were done by another agent. Great American Van Lines' estimate was not the lowest I received, but guaranteed peace of mind was worth a few extra hundred bucks. Also they were the only ones to provide the estimate break up (without me insisting for it) - which helped me knock off a few things to keep estimate within my budget (e.g. I sold some old stuff, etc.)
After making 19 moves over the past 44 years, I can attest that Great American Van Lines ranks as one of the best movers in the business. My experience started with the highly professional and personable service form David, the sales executive. After a misunderstanding in how I wanted to store and ship my goods, Nathan took swift action to make the necessary changes to accommodate my desires. He also hand-selected his top team to complete the packing and loading of my household goods. We had a lot of antique furniture and other high-value items that required special packing. Jason and his crew did an exceptional job of going beyond my expectations to ensure that my valuable goods received the very best protection that the industry could provide. To attest to the quality of work they did, the agent at delivery said that this was the best packed shipment that he had seen in his career. As move coordinator, Brain did an outstanding job of responding to my unique request as well as helping to solve billing-related and other issues. He was always very courteous and timely in making sure that I was satisfied. Above all, the entire team at Great American Van Lines in Jersey City New Jersey made me feel like a valued customer.Likewise, the crew who in Washington did an outstanding job of unloading my goods. They were very proficient and handle my goods with tender loving care. They also went out of their way to protect my newly remodeled home.I want to thank the entire team for a job extremely well done!
Great American Van Lines, part of Jersey City New Jersey, move was an excellent experience in every phase. I had read reviews of SEVERAL DIFFERENT MOVERS and listed the areas that were subject to problems. Some reviewers didn't like the procedure of the loading of all their stuff then having to sign off that there was damage or whatever. Some had a problem with some of their boxes not delivered and by the time they realized it a few days later had already signed off that all had been received. To address a few of these potential problems, (I believe in clear and precise communication. It helps avoid problems.) I talked to my sales rep, Nathan, with my requirements: A person with authority was to go over each of my furniture with me and note any dents, scratches, chips or any other imperfections (this took a little time but was worth it), all furniture was to be totally wrapped to avoid problems during transport, I provided 5X7 labels that I had printed with the destination name, address and phone number that was to be attached to each box etc that was loaded. My sales rep, Nathan, was excellent. He was professional and very patient with my questions and concerns. Jose and his packing and loading crew are the best. So easy to work with and patient with me and careful in the packing and loading. The unload crew and driver, Jose, Jamie and Rodger, were so careful with the unloading and setting up. I received everything and in great condition. I, without reservation, definitely recommend this mover.

Moving companies aren't required to be an AMSA member, but the ones that are have committed to the association's rules and regulations, which protect both the companies and the consumers hiring them. If a company isn't an AMSA member, that doesn't mean it isn't reputable, but an AMSA membership is a clear indication of legitimacy.

One type of tip to avoid: alcohol. It's usually illegal for movers to have bottles of alcohol in the truck or van, so tipping a bottle of wine or liquor could get them into trouble.
