HORRIBLE! I was almost scammed into tons of unnecessary dental work!!

I chose this office because they are one of only two in the area that accept medicaid, but have opted to pay out of pocket for my dental care after going to see Dr Gupta once. I brought my 4 year old son for his first visit and planned to have him watch me for my x rays and cleaning before doing his. We never got that far because he was very afraid and threw a tantrum, refused to even sit while I had my cleaning, etc. I did make it through the x-rays before this happened and before we left, Dr Gupta called me in, asking that my son wait in the waiting room. I was dubious, but he was sitting quietly, and I agreed to go in as long as the someone would let me know if he started having trouble again. They agreed, but by the time I came back out 5 minutes later, he was up against the wall sobbing his little heart out and the receptionist was still typing away, completely ignoring him.

This alone would have been enough to keep me away, but it gets worse. When she brought me in, the dentist expressed a lot of concern about the terrible condition of my teeth, examined my x-rays and my mouth, and pronounced that I would have to come back several times for multiple fillings. When I asked if there was anything I could do, if any of the issues could be healed with better diligence on my part, she said no. Then she warned me that I would need to have this done soon because if the decay continued, I would need root canals, which would not be covered by my insurance. She wouldn't tell me exactly which teeth, or even exactly how many cavities, but when pressed, the hygienist told me the dentist had identified 9! I was really surprised and upset, having never had a cavity before, so I sought a second opinion after getting referrals from some friends.

When I asked for my records for the new dentist, they charged $10 for 3 pages of records that I picked up myself to bring to the other dentist.

When I went to the other office, the hygienist and then the dentist looked at my teeth and x-rays, and told me that they were very sorry I had had such a bad experience, but that my teeth were absolutely fine. Not 9 cavities, but ZERO. They mentioned to me that it is difficult for dentists to cover their costs when taking the small payments that insurance will give them; what I took this to mean was that some dentists will create work for themselves by diagnosing cavities where there are none. I'm so angry that I almost had my mouth drilled up and unnecessary work done, was put through all this worry, and all for this dishonest dentist to make some money!! I can't believe she is still in business, but I hope that the time I took to write this review will save someone the experience I had.

If I could give it 0 stars I would. Dr. Gupta was unresponsive to my questions, told me she couldn't see a reason for my tooth pain ( showed x-rays to an endodontist afterwards and was shown the ENTIRE tooth was cracked from root to tip- very clear on the film). Office made me pay for xrays even though insurance was supposed to cover them. They billed the wrong insurance (old one on file instead of the one I presented at appointment) thenrudely refused to correct the error when I called about a bill I received charging me. Called my insurance who put me on hold, called Cayuga Family Dental, came back on to me and told me how terriblely the office manager treated her! AND still refused to bill the insurance even though the rep told them to as it was part of the office contract with that company. DO NOT GO HERE. BAD DENTIST, SHADY BILLING PRACTICES!!!!

Highly Suspect, Poor Service!

I don't trust Dr. Gupta and I will never go back!

I had just moved here from California when I found that Cayuga Family Dental was one of only 2 dentists in the area that would accept my insurance. I called for a basic check up and asked ""how soon they could fit me in""...apparently the receptionist interpreted this as an ""Emergency Appointment"" since that's what I found had been scheduled when I arrived. As I had already taken time off work I accepted the emergency appointment.

At this appointment x-rays were taken and Dr. Gupta said she had found one cavity which would need to be filled. I had never had any cavities before, but I had no reason to believe that she was untrustworthy so I scheduled an appointment for the filling. When I returned to have the cavity filled, and after the Novocaine, drilling and filling were all done, Dr. Gupta said I would have to make additional appointments for two other cavities. When I asked why she hadn't mentioned the other cavities at the last visit she became distressed. When I pressed her to view my x-rays so she could show me where these cavities were, she became angry and said that my x-rays were confidential and she could not show them to me. With further pressing she admitted that the two new cavities ""weren't cavities yet"" and that they were on the front of my incisors. When I complained that this sounded cosmetic and therefore not covered by my insurance she replied ""Oh, don't worry, I'll write it up as cavities so they will cover it.""

I was shocked and appalled, it sounded like she would be very comfortable not only lying to me about whether or not I had cavities, but also to my insurance company.

After leaving her office I noticed sensitivity associated with the filling she had placed and later found that it needed to be re-sealed. When I had another dentist ask her for the original x-rays her office declined to send them... Very suspicious! Given her behavior I don't know if the cavity I had filled was ever really there and without the original x-rays no other dentist can confirm or deny whether there was ever a cavity present.

bad news

I don't usually write reviews, nor take the time to write bad reviews, but this office is worth warning people about.

I have been treated very poorly there. I got very bad vibes the first interactions I had with them a few years ago, but recently my bad feelings were confirmed. The dr is extremely uninterested in personal connection, and talks about you to the staff behind your back. The receptionist is supremely disrespectful and unkind. And everyone there was rather condescending. They would not even tell me which teeth needed fillings or give me clear details at all about my mouth!

What strikes me even more odd however, is that there were two other negative reviews on this site from some time ago (their assessments of which I happen to agree with). Which were immediately followed up by a number of generic and clearly fake positive reviews about how great the office is. They obviously wrote them themselves!

CFD are sad people, running a poor operation. They have called us up soliciting us for more appointments, and have in general been very unprofessional.

If you have a choice, do not go here. I do not want to give them even one star.

Place weirded me out.

This is a weird place. The receptionist looked at me fishy because I got there 5 minutes late. There was a guy at the desk who didn't like me. They demanded payment BEFORE doing the work, that seemed strange to me. The guy said I should go somewhere else if that's not OK. I walked out, then changed my mind and paid their fee ahead of time. They said they had to call my doctor because I have a pin in my knee, because I might need an injection before tooth cleaning - totally weird! When they told me they charge for a xerox of the x-rays, I asked for the credit charge to be cancelled, which they did, and I walked out. The place just seemed strange and I didn't like how they treated people. I left wondering if I was being a cranky jerk. But reading all the terrible reviews about them I'm glad I walked away from this, my instincts were right.

Beware-most (if not all) of these 5-star reviews are FAKE

If you check most of these ""reviewers"" review histories, you'll see that most of them have left 5-star reviews for hundreds of other businesses--including other dentists in other states. I'm guessing Cayuga Family Dental hired some company to improve their terrible online reviews by plastering a slew of glowing (but suspiciously short) reviews.

I saw Dr. Gupta for maybe two years. My initial impression was that the office was clean and the work was acceptable, but that Dr. Gupta was very cold and unreceptive to my questions and concerns. She told me I had a tooth that needed to be monitored and that I would likely need a root canal (which she would have to send me to another dentist for--I thought most dentists could perform that procedure themselves? Perhaps this isn't uncommon?). That really scared me and on my next visit I inquired about the status of my tooth to see if I really did need a root canal. She acted like I was crazy and seemed to have no memory or record of ever telling me that I would need a root canal. The root canal 180 was rather unsettling because I'm certain I hadn't imagined it (who would?!), but I continued to see her for another cleaning visit or two. I just found her to be so unlikable that when she was dropped by my insurance I decided there was no reason to continue seeing her. I thought that would be the end of it, but as others around the internet have commented, it's next to impossible to get your records from this place! When I switched to another dentist, I went into Cayuga Family Dental's office thinking it should be pretty simple to pick my records up. The rather unpleasant receptionist informed me that I had to pay $10 and that they would call me when my records were ready. I told her I needed my records by my next appointment at my new dentist (8 days later). Having not heard anything, a week later I called and told the receptionist that I needed my records (the x-rays being the crucial piece) by my appointment the next day. She said she would speak to the ""business manager."" Unsurprisingly, I heard nothing and had to have new x-rays taken at my appointment. The receptionist left a message two weeks after that indicating that my now useless records were ready for pick-up. This means it takes 3 weeks and $10 for them to gather 3-4 visits worth of records and x-rays, and they didn't even have to tax themselves with faxing or mailing them--I was going to physically pick them up! Unbelievably ridiculous.

In short, both the dental and business practices at Cayuga Family Dental are VERY sketchy and I'm just glad I got out when I did. I know it can be hard to find a good dentist AND someone covered by your insurance (if you're lucky to have it), but avoid this dentist at all costs.

Consider these reviews with care

The only reason I am writing the following is because I got worried about the distribution of review scores. If you check the history of reviews you will see that the two very negative reviews are some of the oldest. ALL the other ones are fairly recent and excellent. This is unlikely to happen by chance. This is more likely a systematic approach, for example, when a business likes to boost its reputation.

I had the pleasure once or twice this office. Though I had no horrid experience I certainly felt sent away without the Dr's interest in doing anything or trying to help. Neither was the personnel at the front desk that enthusiastic. I am sure the Dr. can list her reasons but the feeling of disinterest lingers.

Lets assume for a moment that my experience was unusual. Yet, it is still unlikely that all the other recent reviewers had indeed such extraordinary positive experiences.

Top notch and clean

I have actually been a patient of Dr Gupta for many years and have been very happy. She is very gentle and I also like the Office policy of being informed of the charges before hand. I have always had my work done right the first time. I would highly recommend her. The office is top notch and very clean and hygienic and the hygienist was very friendly. Over the years I have sent several friends and they have all been very happy.
