Here in our physical therapy department we work with our neurologists and our Pain Management Group to provide drug free treatment for our patients suffering from painful conditions. Common conditions that we treat are bulging discs in the spine, nerve impingements, fibromyalgia, rotator cuff tears, and knee and hip replacements. Treatment includes exercises to aid in healing as well as various manual treatment modalities such as joint mobilization, soft tissue stretching, myofascial release, ultrasound, laser and TENS electrotherapy. The function of these tools is to provide functional rehabilitation, spinal stabilization, strength and endurance training, aerobic conditioning, balance therapy and postural re-education. Using these tools together helps aid in healing and provides long term solutions to many of these conditions.

Dr. Ralph Mangels serves as an Associate Clinician in South Shore Neurologic's Musculoskeletal Pain department. He is a graduate of New York Chiropractic College, class of 1990. Following graduation he completed additional post-doctoral studies in the fields of neurology, neurophysiology, and rehabilitation. In 1993, he was awarded his diploma in Chiropractic Neurology. In addition to active practice, he is an adjunctive faculty member of New York Chiropractic College and frequently lectures on topics involving: neurology, pain, musculoskeletal function, and rehabilitation. Dr. Mangels joined our staff in 1998.

He received his M.B.A. in Healthcare Administration from Regis University in 2005. Dr. Rosen has subspecialty expertise in neurotology and is the neurotology consultant for our Balance Therapeutics department at South Shore Neurologic Associates, P.C. He was the Medical Director of the Cushing Neuroscience Institute at North Shore/LIJ -Southside Hospital from 2012-2016. Dr. Rosen is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in the specialty of Neurology. Dr. Rosen has authored articles appearing in professional literature on a variety of neurologic topics, including infection, dementia, seizure, vascular disease and neurotology. Dr. Rosen joined our practice in 1989.

Ms. Bumstead, a Nurse Practitioner in our Comprehensive MS Care Center, here at South Shore Neurological Associates P.C., graduated from Nursing School in 1979 and received a Masters of Science in the Adult Health Nurse Practitioner program at SUNY Stony Brook in 1999. Ms. Bumstead has had extensive hospital experience in Neurology, Neurosurgery, and in the management of Intrathecal Baclofen therapy. She became a Multiple Sclerosis Certified Nurse (MSCN) in 2007. Ms. Bumstead joined our practice in 2001.

Dr. Schilling received her Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Hofstra University in 2017, followed by her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Stony Brook University in 2020. Throughout her clinical experience she was worked with patients with neurologic conditions such as: Multiple Sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, stroke, concussion, cerebral palsy, and vestibular dysfunction. She is currently certified in LSVT BIG, a treatment for patients with Parkinson’s disease. She is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and has experience working with sports injuries and professional athletes. She is looking to continue her growth as a clinician by gaining certifications in vestibular rehab, balance body torso weighting, and concussion.

Dr. Stephanie VanSchaick received her Bachelors of Science in Biology from St. Joseph’s College in 2013, followed by her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from New York Institute of Technology in 2018. Her doctoral research that explored specific neurological components of Parkinson’s disease was presented at multiple conferences, most notably for The American Society of Neurorehabilitation. Following this, she became certified in LSVT BIG, a treatment for Parkinson’s disease. In addition, Stephanie began extending her services to treat pelvic floor dysfunctions in both women and men - this includes any pain, weakness, bowel, bladder, or sexual issue. In order to fulfill her desire to treat all patients holistically, she became a certified health coach through the Natoinal Society of Health Coaches - a credible program designed specifically for health care professionals, designed to guide individuals to formulate and achieve specific health goals.
Manual Therapy
Re-evaluation: Depending on the extent and severity of your condition, re-evaluation occurs after 3-6 Medical Pain Management treatments, 10-12 Acupuncture treatments, and 10-16 Manual Therapy treatments ( physical therapy / chiropractic ). Progress is evaluated using your subjective report of improvement and objective measures found during your re-evaluation. Recommendation for further treatment or possible changes will be based on your measured improvement and residual pain.
