Worst of everything.................

Worst of everything to offer:
1) Worst service
2) Worst food
3) Worst environment to eat and gather
4) Wait staff could care less
5) Wait staff expected a gratuity for horrible delivery
6) Never bother going back, better to go to Wendy's
or any other fast food service in town
7) Need a rating lower than the lowest offered

Of course the view is fantasti...

Of course the view is fantastic! We hardly have any water in Indiana, even manmade, so the reservoire is nice. However, we never visit when the weather is not nice because the food and prices just aren't worth it to sit inside. The food is okay. I don't mind high prices if the food is excellent, but for the price, the food is only okay. The service has always been mediocre when we go there. If you want an excellent fish dinner, go to Bonefish Grill. If you want ambiance, give Rick's a chance!

Disappointed.

My wife and I have been to Rick's a great many times over the years and we have seen a definite change for the worse.
On Saturday, September 5, 2010 at 2PM were were served food with hairs in it. Our server apologized and gave us a bill credit., Moments later the manager walked past our table and said nothing. As we left I asked to talk with him and his attitude was not to be believed. He said he WAS going to stop by our table but was BUSY. Then, when my wife suggested we might not come back, he said, ""Because of a hair?"" No. It was his attitude!
We never know what happens to our food while it is being prepared in the kitchen of any restaurant. Such is the risk of eating out. But, this manager Don (last name Black?) gets failing grades in public relations and may say more about Rick's than the atmosphere. We are deeply disappointed at the treatment we received.

Ricks Boatyard cafe of Horrible service

Horrible! lived in Indy all my life and never been until May 2010. The wife has been asking me to take her there for yrs. Finally we decided go. We made reserv. 6 hrs in advance for 8 pm on a Sat. night. The troubles began as soon as we arrived. We walked in a long line at the host stand, the party of 4 directly in front of us WITH NO RESERV. was seated with no wait. We stepped up to find that they did not enter our reserv. even though the Girl that spoke with us was there and remembered our name. we were asked to wait for a table for 10-15 even though those right before were sat directly. No big deal, yet! We made out way to the outdoor bar and spent $30 on an overpriced 4 drinks. 45 mins has now passed and still the buzzer for our table has not went off. I went back to host stand and ask for a seat or a manager. Apparently they never entered our buzzer # either, because we were then seated directly to a dirty table full of food particles that she said would wiped immediately. We sat at a dirty table for another 25 mins with no serv. before I confronted a manager. I explained the complete disappointment up to this. He assured me he would take care of it. By the time we received our food it was 9:45, our reservation was at 8 pm. The waiter, with whom I trying to be polite with and assure him that nothing was his fault, still had brought us no silver ware or even napkins, but plates of food. The lobster tail my wife had was cold and over cooked and my Filet was avg. Aside from the view of Eagle Creek which we saw for WAY too long, the eve. was everything but romantic in every way. On top of that Management did virtually nothing. We could have had a MUCH better meal at Outback, Longhorn, or Texas Roadhouse. I will never go back!

Reservations Dishonored

I made an on-line dinner reservation for 7:30 pm. I arrived at 7:25pm, checked in and was told it would be 5 to 10 minutes because they needed to clear off and set up a few tables. After waiting more than 20 my wife and I left. This was our 5th Wedding Anniversary and thanks to Rick's it was ruined. If I did not have a confirmed reservation then I should wait as long as I have to wait to be seated. However, the entire point of a reservation, is to have a table reserved for one's arrival. Again 5-10 minutes is acceptable 20-30 is not. It is rude and unprofessional. No one even offered to mitigate the wait, free drink, or a free app. I did not get the time of day the the staff simply did not care that I left. I will not be back.

Too Pricey for Food and Service

Our first visit to Rick's was a disaster. Contacted the manager only to be told she could not send out

free gift cards for every disgruntled guest. Makes me wonder how many there have been.

My husband ordered the special of the day, and it was a $35 ribeye(special?).

Reservations had been made prior to our groups visit, and still we waited about 20 minutes for our tables.

We finely arranged them ourselves.

Worst Service Possible

Visited on a Sunday afternoon expecting to sit outside listening to live music. Instead, due to cloudy weather that morning (it WASN'T and DIDN'T rain while I was there or later) the musicians played inside much to our disappointment. While the music was great, the food and service were terrible. Once the waiter finally made it over to the table to take our orders, he then disappeared and we had to ask for another server. In total, we had FIVE different servers wait on the four of us during our two hour stay. And then we had to ask for drinks because nobody seemed to care our glasses were empty. Needless-to-say, I'm never going back and neither will the guests who were with me. Overrated. Overpriced. Poor management.

Better Choice than the other Seafood Restaurants

If you like the taste of seafood and taking someone along who doesn't, Rick's Cafe Boatyard is a recommendation to consider seriously. It was funny as I also checked into the reviews of Rick's and was concerned about comments of slow and poor service. I looked at the dates to see how recent they were. Six years ago can not possibly reflect the current business philosophy.

I am happy to say it doesn't. Rock's had already filled in its prime reservations slots which made me take one an hour earlier than I wished. I came with three lovely ladies and even though we were twenty minutes late, we were seated right away. No arguments. No problem. We were waited on quickly, food came out quickly, hot and delicious. My salmon roulade was perfect. The board-roasted whitefish drew a wonderful praise as did the Shrimp Scampi and Chicken Parmesean. Never went thirsty and the deserts (cheesecake and creme boule) were eaten down to the plate even though we all claimed we had no more room for any food.

Although the place was packed, we stayed with drinks and talked and laughed as the band played in the background. We should have left much earlier but enjoyed the restaurant for two and half hours without so much of having the check placed in front of us. When the check came, it was good to see that I would be paying about 35% less than I would downtown Indianapolis.

My only complaint? I like to finish my meal with an expresso. I was told Rick's machine was not working. When I asked the waitress ""Where is Rick?"" half-jokingly, she pointed him out for me. Easily approachable, Rick heard me out and said he would have that rectified. We'll see.

Regardless, I will return again and again. The menu is pretty large to get a feel at one sitting. So, if you want downtown cooking but the outside, quiet views then you need to try Rick's Cafe Boatyard. Remember that everything is ala carte so you pay a little more. Just enough, however, to make it special.

Rick's Does Not Rock!

I and a group of old co-workers met at Rick's in Summer '07. It was about 25 people. Reservations were made in advance-however, they did not have a table ready for us even though we had been advised earlier by management that the reservation was good 15 mins past our reservation time. I was dissappointed in the service-it took one hour for someone to come take a drink order. It took another 45 mins for the food order. I would recommend perhaps more help on days that are the busiest-this was Sunday afternoon. I would also recommend additional training for the help. Had the food been beyond my expectations I could have overlooked the service-but they could use the help in that area as well. This was my third visit over a period of 5 years-and each time was exactly the same-bad service, average food.

Give yourself some time

The food and drinks were pretty good, I had the mahi-mahi sandwich which was a bit dry,and my date had the New York Strip which I sampled and it was excellent. Hickory smoked and cooked the way he asked for it.

I'd stick with the specials (drink-wise) or the seasonal beer. Our service, especially on the deck was very, very slow. We would have stayed outside for an extra cocktail, but we waited nearly 20 minutes for the first drink, and the deck was dead. That's the only reason I took off a couple stars.

A friend of ours used to work there and warned us of the slow service before we went, but we weren't expecting to be there for as long as we were. One thing that helped was the live jazz music in the bar.

All in all, I'd go back, but I'd be prepared to spend most of the evening there.

Don't go for the service or the food

The only reason to go here is for the location, which is unbeatable. The food is OK, but not that special, and the service is indifferent. And if you drink out on the terrace they give you plastic cups, which does a good job of killing the atmosphere. I knew a waitress who worked here, and the strories she told about the management explained why the staff are not always on top of things. Rick seems to have an attitude, and it unfortunately shows.

Great food wonderful service

Rick's fresh music and live seafood speaks to this Indianapolis institution's focus on food and ambience. A great place to dine and our server Jasmine anticipated our every need. Wonderful summer Sunday afternoon.

Ricks Forever

I have the fondest Memories of Ricks Cafe. I have travelled all over the US and I still remember Ricks!!! You go to Ricks for the food and ambience, not for fast food. So if you are in a hurry, I'm sure there is a McDonald'ds nearby. Enjoy eating here again and again. I now live on the West coast, so go there and eat for me!!!! The food is great, the specialty drinks are to die for, and the ambience is so relaxing. One of my favorites across the country. See if they still make a sweet tart drink at the bar, and tell them Michele with a post on City Search says HI!!!

Great Food, Not So Great Service

I love the food and the atmosphere, but the service is not up to standard. I have been there twice for dinner. The first time, we waited at the table at least 35 minutes before we were served our beverages even! The food took forever, but was well worth it. The second time I went, the server messed up our drinks and was not very attentive. The food, as always, was excellent. So if you have patience, it is an excellent place to dine.

Great Spot

Great food, great location. Service can be spotty when the place is packed, which it frequently is on nice summer evenings. Don't go if you're in a hurry. Take your time and enjoy yourself. The food is consistently excellent.
