Glaucoma
Glaucoma is actually a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve. The optic nerve is responsible for connecting the back of the eye (retina) to the brain. Glaucoma is usually caused by an increase in the fluid pressure in the eye – either because of overproduction of fluid or when the drainage system of the eye becomes blocked. The higher pressure inside the eye can cause damage to the optic nerve, resulting in permanent vision loss.
Ophthalmology
Th Street, Idaho Falls, Idaho) was founded and established by Kenneth W. Turley, M.D., in 1986 for the purpose of providing Southeast Idaho and the adjoining states with medical and surgical eye services under one roof. The physical facilities contain 14,000 square feet of floor space, two-thirds of which are devoted to clinical ophthalmology, business, and reception-related matters. A major add-on and remodel was completed in July 2009.

Cataracts
Cataracts are a normal occurrence in an aging eye: your transparent eye lens begins to cloud over with the gradual build-up of naturally-occurring proteins in the eye. Instead of allowing light to enter properly, the cloudy lens creates a foggy appearance to everything you see.
Cataract Surgery
During cataract surgery your eye’s natural lens is removed. This is necessary because the protein build-up on the lens cannot be separated from the lens. After the lens is removed, your cataract doctor will insert a new lens to restore clear vision. The good news is that the replacement lens options are amazing.
Eye Exam
Our Southeast Idaho retinal specialists offer treatment for retinal diseases. The treatment will depend on which part of the retina is affected, how severe the problem is, and what is causing the problem. A comprehensive dilated eye exam will help your doctor diagnose the issue and recommend treatment options.

Internal Medicine
Dr. Gardner began his formal medical education at the University of California, Irvine, where he graduated at the top of his class with Alpha Omega Alpha Honors. He went on to perform his internship in Internal Medicine at the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. He then performed his residency at the prestigious Jules Stein Eye Institute, UCLA. There he was elected as Chief Resident and received the Residency Research Award in Excimer Laser technology. This qualified him to be selected for a Fellowship in Corneal and Refractive Surgery at Louisiana State University, where the first excimer laser procedure in the world was performed on a sighted eye. He also participated in the FDA investigational trials on the excimer laser. He has published papers and written chapters on laser vision correction and diseases of the cornea.

Ultrasound
Your doctor will use a hand-held blade to create a small corneal incision. A tiny probe will be inserted to gently break up the cloudy lens using ultrasound waves. This same tool is used to remove the lens fragments from the eye. This is called phacoemulsification.
