She attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with her bachelor's degreee in Biology. Dr. Calderwood then went on to attend UAB, University of Alabama School of Medicine. Following her internship at Baptist Health System in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Calderwood completed her residency training in ophthalmology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee. She then completed a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at the hamilton Eye Institue, Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Eye Exam
The American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests children with seemingly normal vision have their first eye exam by age four. Although most children have no eye problems, many ocular conditions may go unnoticed by the family. The Eye Center physicians routinely treat children with nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, "crossed eyes" (strabismus), "lazy eyes" (amblyopia), blocked tear ducts, and other conditions.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is a procedure that removes the cloudy lens from the eye. Today, this procedure can be accomplished very quickly and no stitches are needed. A local anesthetic is used and the surgeon makes a small incision in the outer covering of the eye (conjuctiva). Then a technique called phacoemulsification, removes the lens through the small incision.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an eye disease which is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. Two out of every 100 people over the age of 35 have their vision threatened by this disease. Yet when diagnosed early, blindness from glaucoma is almost always preventable.

He completed his residency training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Foster serves North Alabama as a comprehensive ophthalmologist and treats a wide variety of eye conditions. His areas of specialization include cataract surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and eyelid surgery.

Many patients present with bothersome lesions around or near their eyes. Most procedures can be performed in the office under local anesthetic with the patient returning home a few minutes after the surgery.

However, treatment may occasionally result in unwanted side effects. Some eye drops may sting redden the eye and cause blurring or occasional headaches. Such side effects usually disappear after a few weeks. Though rare, other drops may affect pulse, heartbeat and breathing. Pills sometimes cause tingling of fingers and toes, drowsiness, loss of appetite, bowel irregularities and occasional kidney stone formation. They are usually prescribed only when absolutely necessary. You should notify your ophthalmologist immediately if there is a question of possible side effects.
