I started going to the Yoga Institute (Houston location) about a year ago and rotate between this and two other Houston studios (The Hope Center and Joy Yoga) depending on my schedule and mood.
The Anusara yoga practiced here provides a nice balance of mind, body, and spirit. The space is beautiful and clean, and they have tons of yoga props that you can use during your practice. The teachers vary greatly in personality and teaching style - so try a few different classes to figure out which teaching styles and classes you prefer. Of the ones I've tried, I find I get the most out of the classes taught by Raye Lynn, Greg Smythe, and Janie Bowes.
-Portsmouth Street actually turns into a parking lot on that block. The studio is on the north side of the parking lot.
-You can bring your own mat, or just show up...they have everything there.
-The studio no longer has level requirements. When I started there, I was an intermediate yoga student and tried several different classes until I found the ones that worked best for me.
-At the beginning of each session (i.e., semester), they offer a free class week. They also handed free class cards for us to refer friends, so you could probably call and see if they'll let you try your 1st class for free.
The only con I can think of - it'd be helpful if they posted the detailed class calendar online so we could see which teachers and special events are are scheduled. Otherwise, this place is pretty much perfect. Go check it out!

I started going to the Yoga Institute about a year and a half ago for regular classes. The teachers there were so sensitive to my back injury at the time. Now, physically, emotionally and on every level, I'm doing so much better. The yoga that I practiced and learned at the Yoga Institute has a lot to do with that!
If you are new to yoga, this is a great place. If you have been practicing for a long time and would like a clean, beautiful new yoga home, this is a great place. If you are recovering from any kind of injury or wish to improve your overall posture and sense of vitality, this is a great place.

Best Yoga Studio in the entire Houston area and one of the oldest. Classes are taught with a compassionate desire to truly help people. Raye Lynn, the owner is the best teacher!
Its a very special place and we are so fortunate to have a studio like this here in Houston. If you are looking to find a class, this is the one to go to.

The Yoga Institute is a great place to practice Anusara yoga, however they are very limited in tehir class times. They offer no Friday, Saturday afternoon, or any Sunday classes. They only offer an advanced class twice a week. The yoga instructors are a hit and miss. The owner is the best teacher but the others talk to much and do not necessarily give the greatest classes. The prices have considerably increased since the renovation and there has not been any class schedule expansion. Despite all this it is a very warm and friendly environment to grow your practice.

Being a yoga beginner I have found the instructors here to be very encouraging and patient, they are kind and loving and obviously enthusiastic about their yoga practice. I wish the Yoga Institute had more variety in the times the classes are offered. I understand they are going through a complete renovation and enlargement of the space so maybe more classes will be offered in the future.
