I am an avid cyclist and ride my bike everywhere. This weekend I decided to stop by Southland Hardware on Westheimer to pickup some stuff for a project on my way home from work. Upon entering the store one of the clerks confronted me because I was carrying a backpack. Female customer were entering the store with purses. But the clerk and then a manager would not allow me to enter with my backpack saying it was against store policy. They wanted me to leave it behind the desk with the clerk. That was something I could not do since I carry my phone, wallet and my blood pressure medicine in my backpack. They would not provide any reasonable alternative such as having an employee accompany me or a secure place to lock up my bag…
This is blatant gender discrimination.
I have frequented this store for the past 15 years and regularly spend my hard earned money there, usually more then I should. On occasion I've run into this issue at other stores, but usually managers take one look at me and tell me to come on in and shop.
I can not believe store owners are allowed to set up arbitrary rules like this with one rule for women and one for men. Its unequal treatment.

After 15 years of using this businesses services, I had a bad experience at this store today. I walked into the store only to be confronted by one of the clerks telling me I could not enter the store with my backpack. I have always carried a backpack into their store. It has never been an issue. The clerk told me I could leave it in his care... I could not, my back pack is where I carry my valuables, phone, wallet, checkbook, prescription medication. I asked to speak with a manager and got the same instructions. Several women entered the store with purses as big as my backpack.
I have sent the store a email, but wanted to let others know about my experience today.

I went in looking for a particular screw to repair a handbag I had broken the latch on. I approached the credit counter and the young man helped me find the right size screw and then he explained to me why this one was the right one and did I want it cut to fit? Did I need anything else? He was absolutely helpful and offered all of the things that I would have never thought of. I wish I had caught his name. He deserves credit. I like the feel I get when I go in this store. Always helpful and knowledgeable staff. Way to Go.
