Sicilian*Texan Hospitality at its best!

Sammy Patrenella [Jr & Sr] and waiter Hector~~made my 1st visit and BD dinner last nite~~one 2 remember.

The owners were soo generous~~they sent FREE eggplant parmesan, garden fresh salad, wine & beer and homemade tiramisu for 3 people~how AWESOME & unexpected is that?!

Everything they serve is organic and/or from their garden in backyard. Our main entrees were: the saturday nite special trout w/crabmeat topping & the 2nd dish~~veal picatta~~D'lish! Everything we ate was sooo good.

The owners & staff made this BD dinner soo special & heart felt....SMOOCHES

I had never heard of Patrenella's before and only knew about it because I see it every time I get my hair cut. My barber is across the street and I always guiltily park in Patrenella's parking lot. I found out at the last minute my best friend was going to be alone for mother's day so I invited her to meet me here hoping it wouldn't already be full of reservations. We got there early and were immediately seated. The service there is excellent. Everyone was very polite and friendly. I thought it was very nice when the waiter approached just as I was giving my friend her mother's day card that he backed off and waited until we were finished. It's the little things that really count sometimes. We ordered and didn't have to wait long for our food to arrive. It was awesome. I recommend wholeheartedly what I ordered: Veal in Olive sauce. Wow.
The house it is in is beautifully decorated and there are plenty of windows that let in a ton of light. I believe the house has been in the family for a couple of generations. Nice to be eating in a place with history. Can't wait to go back.

Best Italian Family Run Restaurant in Houston

My wife and I have been dining at Patranella's for about 15 years. Sammy Patrenella and his family really know how to treat their guests well and they make you feel welcome and at home. The food is top notch. Sammy's eggplant is tasty and is worth ordering as an appetizer no matter how many other dishes you may order, and the stuffed artichoke made my wife's day. The waiter, Jay, was very nice and treated us well. He knew the menu well and was effiicent, and courteous. My wife ordered crab cakes as an entree, and they were tasty and appealing. She mentioend during dinner that the crab cakes were fresher and tastier than any crab cakes she has had in Houston or Galveston, They were full of fresh lump crab, and she ate every bite. I ordered a shrimp-pasta dish that was excellent. The bottle of beer was ice cold, and our dinner salad was very fresh. Sammy grows his own garden on an adjacent lot so we imagine that some of the salad greens and veggies may have come from Sammy's own garden. Our meal with two entrees, salad, appetizer and beer was $58 and worth every penny. The restaurant was very busy at 7:30 PM on Saturday night, yet the wait staff excelled and the kitchen put out a superb meal. Sammy, we will be back! Great job! This is a good place to dine.

probably 3.5 stars

This is an enjoyable place to eat. I tried a few things and liked everything.

my favorite italian in Houston

This is hands-down my favorite italian restaurant in Houston. The service isn't always perfect, but overall it is generally pretty good--and excellent when my favorite waiter is there. Their alfredo sauce is fabulous, and they have a pound cake they make in-house that is to die for.

Excellent Italian - charming family-owned restaurant

We are Patrenella's regulars and this has been our favorite hidden spot for years. The food is always premium and the dining room so romantic. It's a historic home turned restaurant. Service has been pretty good though you best make reservations for dinner on weekends.

terrible language

Upon entering the restaurant we were promptly greeted by the hostess. The atmosphere was quaint and welcoming; however, there was some conflict between two of the waiters and one was very loud in voicing his opinion. (There is no way he could have missed us coming in to the restaurant considering we were directly in his line of vision) he cursed quite audibly stunning both my husband and myself. The other customers around us were disturbed by the profanity and my children heard this offensive language. We immediately requested to be seated as far away from this man as possible.
The hostess apologized but the waiter seemed unaffected by our reaction. Once we arrived at our table in the back restaurant the service was wonderful and the food was beyond our expectations. But i can promise you we will think twice about returning because of that man.

I had a fabulous romantic meal here on Friday for my birthday. We haven't been in a couple of years and it was just as good as ever. The food was very good and the service was top notch. There was always someone there whenever anything was needed. I thoroughly enjoyed my evening and I can't wait to go back.

Overpriced but charming

We were promptly seated. The waiter recited the specials but failed to mention the price, which resulted in a party member spending way over his budget for dinner. Bread was replenished without asking. The menu focuses mostly on chicken and pasta. Where the osso buco? The noise volume on a Friday night made conversation a little challenging. Great for a Friday night after-work dinner, but not the best Italian food.

Amazing Lasagna

We have eaten at this wonderful restaurant four times now and each time, everything has been perfect. The appetizers are all wonderful- we especially loved Sammy's eggplant and the caprese - but then again, the sausage and peppers were great too! The lasagna is reasonably priced and homemade. And the fish is amazing. I guess I could go on and on about how delicious the food is- but I also want to mention how charming the house is, as well. This restaurant is in the old family home and the tables are reasonably spaced to insure privacy. One feels as if they are welcome guests in a friendly home. And, after dinner, check out the bocce ball court in the front yard for some more fun. We have dined there as a couple and also with a large group- and each time were made to feel welcome and were fed an amazing meal.

Great Date

Great restaurant. Both our dishes were delicious, good wine, service, and desserts. We will return soon.

Excellent Seafood Linguine!

Cool mellow atmosphere and excellent Italian food. hubby always has Chicken Milanese and love the linguine with fresh sauteed shellfish. Patrenella's is typically my first pick for Date nite. Romantic cottage, excellent service and wonderful AUTHENTIC Italian.

Overpriced pasta pit.......

This place lacks basic Customer Service skills, the waiter we had was very domineering, controlling and rigid, not one smile, the entire duration of the torture session. Add this place to the ever growing list of Lousy Houston restaurants. Food was overpriced. I recommend anyone going out to eat in Houston to bring their Attorney to read the fine print in the menu. It's going to come down to a very few restaurants that are worth the money for the food you get here in Houston. Spend your money wisely and elsewhere.

best real italian food in town

Best Real Italian food in town! Houston's best kept secret. Food is amazing, comfy feeling inside, great atmosphere, wonderful staff. Not to mention Italian family owned and operated.
Could not get any better.

What Fun!

This restaurant is a real gem! It's an old house on a side street off Washington and feels very comforatble. The surprise is in the food. Where you would expect just traditional dishes, the menu knocks it up to the level of all those talked-about strip mall Italian places. The Striped Bass is heaven, and you might want to do double orders of the Asparagus Risotto and make it a meal. Our waiter was all charm and mentioned we should go see the gardens out back as that's where a lot of their vegetables come from. How great is that?

We told some friends about Patrenella's, and they went for brunch last Sunday. They told us you go to the attached restaurant in the back - Corleone's - and can sit outside by the gardens. They loved it.

Everyone should know about this place!

Bad parking, expensive food,

I was stucking between a rock and a hard place, almost literally, as my choices were either the corner of a gravel lot or about two blocks away down Jackson Hill.

Excellent. Matches the exterior of the place, as well as the neighborhood. Very cozy, homey feel. When I first walked in, I thought it would be a great place for a date, and I wasn't the only person to think that, judging by all the couples dining there.

Good eclectic wine menu. Tried a few Italian wines that the waiter recommended, and was moderately impressed. I was a little put off when I noticed their $30 corking fee, which seems a little excessive.

We started out with the calamari appetizer. I'm a really big fan of calamari, and I make it a point to try calamari almost everywhere. At Patrenella's, it definitely is grouped with the TGI Fridays/Chili's tier, solid but un-extraordinary.

For my main course, I had the lasagna, which was quite good. Very tasty, and well prepared, although the serving was a little small for the price.

Not a big desert guy, so no comment on that.

Service was excellent all around.

Overall, I'd consider returning for the environment and ambiance, and hope my prior food experience was a mulligan.

Hidden Gem in Rice Military

We went there with family to celebrate the birth of my child! He was only two weeks old and the helpful staff found us a table out of drafts and in the quietest corner of the restaurant. We started with Sammy's eggplant appetizer and it was amazing...Sammy came out himself to ask how we liked it! Then we had a family sized salad where most of the ingredients came from the restaurant's own garden! The specials all sounded so mouthwatering we all had to discuss what we were each getting so we could try as much as possible! The dinner was so great that we took some friends there the following week for a ""just-as-yummy"" lunch! Afterwards we played bocce ball on the restaurant's own bocce ball court! I truly recommend this place for great Italian food and fun!

Try the pistachio gelato!

Ditto the other great 5-star comments. Try their homemade pistachio gelato for dessert. It really is out of this world!

Absolutely Incredible!

Although not in the best of neighborhoods, Patrenella's serves delicious Italian favorites with (literally) a wonderful homey atmosphere. You dine in the rooms of the owner's home, surrounded by pictures of locals and family. The service is top-notch- first time customers are treated as welcome friends. Be sure to check out the new bar in the back of the building and beautiful garden.

My favorite place for Italian!

This wonderful, family owned, restauant is one of my family's favorite places for dinner. Birthdays, anniversarys, coming home parties - you name it, and we've celebrated it with the Petranella family. Chef Andre' is one of the best in the city - he'll make you anything you want. Chicken Marsala is one of my favorites. Try it - you won't be disappointed.
