Probably not worth the price

I have been a member since April 2009 and recently quit. The equipment is fine; the locker room is fine; but the atmosphere is that of a very big, very impersonal gym. After nearly two years of going almost daily, and training with a trainer at least twice a week, I can honestly say not a soul there on staff knows my name. And I'm not there during peak hours either so it's not as if I'm lost in the crowd. But that's not really my complaint. I have spent thousands of dollars there on training, and yet, when my trainer left and there were a few sessions remaining on my contract, I was refused a refund. Seems very chintzy to me. I might have signed up with another trainer, but under these circumstances, I decided to move on to the FIT club, where already I feel seriously welcomed!



Great Workout

I love this place. You can always get great fitness advise from the other freindly members. Every one is good looking so it keeps you motivated and wanting to look better. The staff there work as a team and provide good customer service.

Mixed bag

Had been a member of this club since the week it opened its doors, and it's had a rapid decline since the early days.

Parking: Never had a problem parking on the top floor even right after work until January 1st, 2009. Even if the ""resolutioner"" crowd tapered off a bit, the club just got so crowded so fast. At times, it felt hugely claustrophobic even for such a huge club. Parking after work hours is now a bonafide nightmare.

Staff: Front desk staff is generally efficient. There's an older sales guy there (late 40's/early 50's) that is just as rude as can be. Made my guest feel very uncomfortable - so much so that she did not join. I hear many are overworked. James, the club manager, is personable enough. Most of the trainers are very unfriendly, which is strange since they are in customer service.

Pool/whirlpool: The pool is first-rate although beware it's not deep enough to run in. Deepest part is 4'6"". Pool is nice, but people don't shower before they get into it, so there's a slick on the bottom near the pool stairs. I've nearly busted my head a few times. Only three lanes, so unless you coming during an off time, you'll be waiting to even share a lane. Whirlpool is overchlorinated most of the time. My eyes water & burn if I'm in it for more than a couple of minutes.

Crowd: Mostly 20- and 30-somethings, although I have spied a few senior citizens in the daytime. Most generally keep to themselves, but there are the requisite number of too-forward guys without a clue that will persist in hitting on you if you're female and not outright hostile.

Bathrooms/locker rooms: I can only speak for the ladies' rooms, but the bathroom is not ventilated. It's about 10 degrees hotter than the locker room with no air circulation. Toilet seats are usually askew. Locker rooms often have people's discarded stuff in them for days on end, so you know staff isn't cleaning them. Pay lockers are generally all broken, so bring your own lock. If someone comes out of the pool, the floor is a swamp.

Equipment: Plenty of cardio for a club this size but it will still all be packed during peak hours. Good weights area. Large personal training area. No indoor running track or rock wall.

Atmosphere: It's friggin hot in there much of the day. Don't dare use the bikes in the afternoon when the sun is beating down thru the hugh plate-glass windows. Way too hot in the cardio area. When I walk into a gym I want it to feel on the chilly side so I won't melt when I get into cardio. The group-x room is stifling during cardio workouts. Too few cleaning staff.

Bottom line: This club has so much potential, but the parking situation is a nightmare. God forbid what it'll be like when the rest of the building fills up. Gym needs to be cleaner and cooler with staff specifically trained in listening to clients' desires.

Beware of locker room!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I used my free week pass at this location to see what it's like as I heard they have a pool, which I need to train for triathlons. First off, during peak hours, yes, parking is horrible. Sales booths with the slimey salespeople should be hidden somewhere as they give this place a car dealership kind of vibe. They could get rid of the cubes and actually put some equipment there for the downtown view. It is very packed in in the cardio area, but the machines are decent. Upstairs is spacious, new equipment, not enough smith machines, lots of meatheads, girly men, and clubby ugly people (very few hotties that I saw there). Now the worst part, the bathrooms are like a bath house, seriously, dirty, small, gay and just nasty, was cautious about bending over in there, could have gotten one in the stink. So nevertheless, I think I'll stay at the Met, much cleaner and classier.

New Facility, Rude Staff

I live walking distance from this gym, and after battling with myself over paying the astronomical membership fees ($60/month for one club!) I finally joined. While all the equipment is new and nice, there are about a million other things that irritate me about this gym. The parking situation is TERRIBLE. In the last week I have seen an accident in the parking garage, as well as two different vehicles on two different occasions crash into poles or other cars. I refuse to park there anymore; you practically can't anyway! I had taken to inventing parking spaces, but I recently got a new car and I'm just not interested in having it destroyed. I expressed concern to a manager there about the parking situation who was rude and completely unhelpful. Actually, the majority of the staff is rude and unhelpful and unfriendly. Its very frustrating, especially because I have done personal training there before. The gym is always packed when I go (yes I go at 6 but I work 10 hour days and I'm not waking up at 5am to work out). I joined this gym for convenience and accessibility. Basically, this is a gym that is overpriced for what you get.

Nice eye candy but way too small and too few cleaning staff!

PROS: very new gym, new state of the art equipment. Great downtown location, not a whole lot of competition shall we say. All classes except spinning are free with membership. Lots of cute women in their 20s and 30s (shocking for Houston, lol), probably due to the location (the fat older ones get married and go live in the burbs probably).

CONS: pricey if you try to buy a membership here (better deals if you go to a less popular location out in the sticks and haggle them down), I went on a 2-week free pass from the website. Biggest 2 problems: small and dirty! Not enough cleaning staff so the locker room floors esp. the shower floors, are pretty disgusting---bring flip flops if you want to take a shower! Locker rooms are also way too small, get very crowded around peak times. Generally, peak times (5-7pm M-Thu) are the worst because the club is filled way beyond its capacity, with long waits for machines and free weights. The cardio area is kind of small and cramped-feeling, you're really packed in like sardines when it's crowded. Upstairs is a lot more space but only 3 free weight squat racks.

Overall energy/atmsophere of the place is very impersonal, sterile and cold---hard to describe how or why exactly, but I've been in other 24HF locations in Houston that just ""felt"" a lot nicer to work out in. Staff is typical of national gym chains: they don't give a raat's @ss once you've signed a contract and they've gotten their commission, unless you pay for a personal trainer. Yoga classes are also typical for a national gym chain: very mediocre, with cheesy New Age music, undertrained instructors never go around and correct your poses...but oh well, at least they're free.

Well, I guess what you're paying for is simply location, location, location when it comes to this part of town. Don't know why they can't hire more cleaning staff though...maybe I.N.S. keeps a close watch on them, lol.

24 Hour Disappointment, Look Beneath the Surface

My initial joy at hearing 24HF was putting stakes in the ground in Midtown lasted about a week. I?ve worked out there close to 100 times now. Frankly, after the rush of enthusiasm that comes from seeing any shiny new gym, this one's disappointments are so flagrant and all-encompassing there is little I can recommend about it. This gym is filthy, a hygiene catastrophe. After the post-workday rush, many of the cardio machines are slick and oozy with sweat. At almost any given time of day, the men?s locker room is an unsanitary maze of towels thrown on the floor and in lockers. Routinely, disgusting wet towels (last night one had huge brown skid marks!) are left in the shower stalls. (Ever see a 24HF employee in there to pick up? -- never seen it, not once.) I got a case of athlete?s foot after two weeks. The whirlpool often has off-color bits of -- ugggh, what is that? -- floating on the foam. Steam room floor is a muddy mess because other members stroll in in their dirty sneakers and sweaty gym clothes. If there were room, I could recount several observed rude, uncaring interactions with the 24HF staff. Their attitude is, uniformly, ?We don?t give a sht. The end.? They seem to be competing in attitude with many of the members, who can most generally be classified as cheesy, unfriendly, and discourteous. Thugs and morons often drop weights they can?t control on the floor with a thunderous quake that shakes the building. No 24HF staff in sight! To be sure, there are lots of easy-on-the-eyes and friendly people there, but they are waaay in the minority. Parking can be a frustrating challenge unless you go at off-peak hours. Equipment availability at peak times -- TERRIBLE, worst I?ve seen at any gym! No ceiling fans to circulate air, temperatures range from uncomfortably cold to stiflingly hot. This gym could be a good one if the 24HF staff would quit overselling memberships and clean up the place and their nasty attitudes. Definitely not a good value for your buck!

Bad Customer Service VIP membership problems

Moving to downtown, this is the closest 24 hour fitness near me. I was excited to go for the first time with my wife. My wife doesn't have a 24 hour fitness membership but the membership I bought had a VIP pass (Platinum Plus All-SuperSport membership) where I can invite only one person anytime I wanted or so I thought.

When I get there, they tell me that she can't come in because my VIP pass is only valid at the club I bought it at. I was shocked because I was told by Fabian (the sales person who sold it to me), that I could go to any club and bring in a guest anytime I wanted. I used to live in the Galleria area and had bought a membership at the Chimney Rock location, but specified that I wanted to go to the Post Oak location since it was the Super-sport club at the time. It wasn't until I moved to downtown Houston that I had this problem.

All in all, if you ever have problems with your membership, the personnel at the club will make you jump through loops and tell you that they have no control; in truth they do. They have the worst customer service and do not even understand any situation you give them. They will only listen to you and make deals when you're about to signup for a membership. I had told them that I've never had a problem with other clubs, my sales person lied to me, and I moved (all facts). They won't listen to any of that and won't budge to even understand the situation. All they will tell you is to call a number and speak to the club that you bought it from. I've done all that and they all point right back to the managers at the Midtown club.

I'm almost sick to my stomach about 24 Hour Fitness because of this fiasco. After my pre-paid membership expires, I will never set foot in another 24 Hour Fitness and I won't recommend to anyone I know to go because no one will help you out and will point fingers in any direction they can think of. All thanks to Rod and Gene of the Midtown 24 Hour Fitness, I'm not a fan.
