Overall
Awesome School

My children have been at Hoaloha Kai Montessori School since if began in 2009. I currently have a child in all three levels, Toddler, Primary & Elementary. I have been impressed by the dedication of the Director and Teachers throughout my experience. My children have developed socially, academically and emotionally. HK's strength is the development of character in each child. I believe this is established because the staff models strong character each day for the children. The parent body is also very involved and supportive. AND if there are any questions or concerns about the level of academics at HK, just ask the 6th graders who just were excepted at Punahou and La Pietra. Great job guys.
Thank you Hoaloha Kai for your great progress and devotion to our children.

Overall
very bad experience

We found the director to be rigid and authoritarian, imposing her dogmatic beliefs/philosophy and unwilling to consider the individual needs of the child or family. Their approach to education, especially in toddler program, is not based on current attachment research or development needs of children. For example, we were required to ""hand off"" our 2 year-old son on the very first day without any transition/acclimation (he was expected to ""cry it out""). He was unnecessarily distressed for the first week, and we ultimately had to withdraw him when he began refusing to go to this school. Furthermore, the toddler classroom space is very cramped, and there was a lack of green outdoor space. Would NOT recommend this school if you are looking for a compassionate, nuturing environment.
