Fillings
Amalgams have been used in dentistry for a long time as they are extremely durable and less expensive than other filling materials. The silver-colored fillings will typically last several years and can be especially useful for filling larger cavities in back molars where we do most of our chewing. There are a few reasons why patients may not want to have amalgam fillings. The dark-metal color can be unsightly. And because the material cannot actually bond to your tooth, there is often a need to remove excess healthy tooth structure to make the filling wider at the bottom and narrow at the top so it will be held in place and not fall out. In addition there is always the ongoing debate about the safety of using mercury as a bonding agent inside amalgam fillings.
Resin Composite
The concept of “filling” a tooth is to replace and restore damaged tooth structure with another material. Typically, there are two types of filling materials to choose from. Most fillings will either be composed of an amalgam material (metal fillings made up of a silver-tin alloy, copper and mercury) or composite resin (tooth-colored fillings made up of acrylic plastics, quartz fillers and colorants).
Veneers
A veneer is a thin outer covering layered over a tooth to give a superficially valuable or pleasing appearance. Tooth-colored veneers are used to cosmetically improve your smile by covering up unsightly staining, chips or cracks, large gaps, and misaligned or crooked teeth. Because veneers are cemented onto the surface of your real teeth, they are an effective way to immediately improve the existing shape, size, length and/or color of those teeth.
Crowns
There are various types of crowns and the combination of materials used depends on what Dr. Mailloux determines will be successful for each individual situation. A ceramic, or porcelain, material is commonly used because it can be sculpted to closely replicate tooth enamel. All-ceramic crowns are used on front teeth because the material’s translucent properties naturally mimic how tooth enamel transmits light. While a crown made entirely of ceramic is quite resilient, sometimes a porcelain layer needs to be fused to a stronger base material, like metal. These types of crowns are opaque and typically used on back molars where they will need to withstand the pressure of chewing on a daily basis.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Without a prosthodontic specialist in the local area, Mailloux Dentistry has responded to patient demand by offering complex prosthodontic* solutions. Dr. Mailloux previously worked with a prosthodontist and that experience early on developed her continued interest in advanced prosthodontic technology. Additionally, Dr. Mailloux has established a strong working relationship with West Michigan Oral Surgery, whose office is located in the same building, and that collaborative partnership has allowed Mailloux Dentistry to provide patients with implant prosthetics.
Jaw Surgery
Sometimes additional oral appliances, such as a palate expander, are worn in conjunction with bracketed wires to achieve a specific movement and correct the overall shape of the jaw. In severe cases, jaw surgery may be necessary as part of a comprehensive orthodontic treatment plan. The length of treatment depends on the methods used but most patients will need to be under orthodontic care for at least six months if not two or three years. And while it’s still common to have orthodontic treatment as an adolescent, there are certainly benefits to earlier orthodontic intervention as well as choosing to straighten your teeth as an adult.
Tooth Extractions
Ridge Augmentation
All-on-4® is an implant prosthetic that typically uses four or more implants to secure the denture. Not all patients are good candidates for implants, either because the bone mass in their jaw isn’t dense enough to securely hold the implant, or nerves and sinuses are in the way. The All-on-4® system places implants on an angle, which alleviates the need for additional surgeries such as bone grafting, ridge augmentation and sinus lifts.
Bone Grafting
The time frame to complete an implant prosthetic is unique to each patient and depends on many factors including tooth removal, time for healing and possible bone grafting. Newer implant technology, such as the All-on-4™ system, is making it possible for some patients to get new teeth in a day. But most commonly the process is lengthy, sometimes lasting more than a year, because the implant needs to heal within the jaw and establish bone connectivity after surgery. The process includes the use of a temporary prosthetic until the final version can be delivered.

Orthodontics
Orthodontics is a specialty field of dentistry that studies and treats improper bites. The need for orthodontic treatment can stem from various tooth irregularities such as crowding and spacing issues, and disproportionate upper to lower jaw alignment. Not only do these conditions affect the overall appearance of a smile, but they affect the functionality. And depending on the severity of the improper bite, the lack of functionality can lead to other problems such as facial deformities, jaw pain, chipped or cracked teeth and loss of teeth.

Braces
When you think about orthodontics, traditional metal “braces” may come to mind. Brackets are cemented to the teeth that need to be moved and a wire is held against those brackets with small elastic bands. This conventional treatment is still commonly used to gradually manipulate misaligned teeth into their desired location. Today there are alternative methods for straightening teeth such as Invisalign ® but they can tend to be more expensive and are limited in their ability to treat severe orthodontic cases.

White teeth are naturally associated with being healthy and attractive, so it’s no surprise that most people desire to have brighter teeth.
