The team performs a variety of laparoscopic general surgeries including procedures for hernia repair, acid reflux disease, gallbladder removal, endocrine conditions and colon disease.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Dr. James Buwen is a board certified general surgeon with specialty training in bariatric surgery and advanced minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Buwen graduated with honors from Nova Southeastern University, College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He completed his residency training at Rowan University-SOM, Stratford, NJ, Kennedy University Hospital/Our Lady Of Lourdes Hospital, serving as Chief Surgical Resident from 2013 to 2014. After residency, Dr. Buwen completed a fellowship in advanced minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. During his fellowship, Dr Buwen published “Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy: The rightful gold standard weight loss surgery procedure” in the peer reviewed Journal of Surgical Obesity and Related Disease, and received the ASMBS Certificate of Training in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery for Fellows. Knee Replacement
While all surgical procedures have risks, gastric sleeve surgery has been found to be one of the safest surgeries when compared to other surgeries. At the New Jersey Bariatric Center, our gastric sleeve procedures are done laparoscopically with small incisions to subsequently reduce the risk of complications. In general, weight loss surgery has complication and mortality rates (4% and 0.1%, respectively) comparable to some of the safest and most commonly performed surgeries in the U.S. including gallbladder surgery, appendectomy and knee replacement.

Laparoscopic Surgery
Hernias are weaknesses in wounds, and lead to a sometimes painful bulge that can enlarge with time. The risk of a wound hernia occurring is one to two percent with laparoscopic surgery. This is a much lesser risk than when the procedures were done as open surgery, when they would occur in 10 to 20 percent of cases. If a wound hernia occurs, another operation is required to repair it. Typically, surgeons wait one year until maximum weight loss has occurred before repair.
