Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration. Also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), this condition affects the center part of the retina, the macula. This area is needed for the sharp, central vision that is used during everyday activities such as driving, reading or working with tools. This condition is a leading cause of vision loss in people over the age of 60 years old. Treatment can slow the loss of vision, but it will not restore vision that has already been lost.

Cataracts
How does UV affect unprotected eyes? UV rays can cause proteins inside the lens to become opaque or cloudy, a condition known as cataracts. Cataracts can make interfere with night vision, reduce your ability to see colors, and make reading difficult; they cannot be reversed, only removed. UV exposure can also cause retinal damage, changes in the eye tissues, and a temporary but irritating "sunburn" of the cornea called photokeratitis.
Eye Exam
Prior to prescribing contact lenses, Dr. Sherman determines what level of vision correction you require in your general eye examination. Refractive status (commonly known as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism depending on your eyes) is evaluated by measuring how the eyes focus when a series of different lenses are placed in front of them.
