Ulcerative colitis is an inflammation of the lining of the large bowel (colon). Symptoms include rectal bleeding, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, weight loss, and fevers. In addition, patients who have had extensive ulcerative colitis for many years are at an increased risk to develop large bowel cancer. The cause of ulcerative colitis remains unknown.

Multiple pregnancies, large weight babies, forceps deliveries, or episiotomies may contribute to muscle or nerve injury during childbirth. A separate test may also be conducted to determine if the nerves that go to the anal muscles are functioning properly. In addition, an ultrasound probe can be used within the anal area to provide a picture of the muscles and show areas in which the anal muscles have been injured.

Imaging tests allow us to see the pouches, sac, or inflammation resulting from diverticular disease. These tests may include one or a combination of tests such as ultrasound, CT scans, or colonoscopy imaging.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Dr. Coury joined Colon & Rectal Specialists in August 2017. He specializes in minimally invasive surgery including robotic surgery of the colon and rectum. He also has a special interest in treating fecal incontinence and obstructive defecation syndrome in patients with rectoceles. Dr. Coury sees patients at our North Side office in Mechanicsville.

Dr. Chuquin joined Colon & Rectal Specialists in September 2022. She specializes in minimally invasive colon and rectal surgery including laparoscopic and robotic surgery. She also has a special interest in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, colon and rectal cancer, and anorectal disorders. Dr. Chuquin sees patients at our Hanover and West End locations.
