I have eaten at this fine restaurant numerous times with a variety of friends and family. For those who don't know it, the owner is a pretty darn good volleyball player!
Not once have I or anyone I've ever eaten at this restaurant with experienced poor service, poor food quality or poor value for the dollar! Whether it's the steak or the crab cakes or an authentic Peruvian dish, Jay gets it right every time!
I'm not sure about the poor reviews here but am guessing that because of the location of the restaurant - the Woodlawn area in a strip shopping center - that the reviewers were expecting TGIF type fare and prices and that they never recovered from that. The prices here are very reasonable for what you get and split plate charges are common at all fine restaurants which also indicates where some of the folks might be used to dining out.
This is top quality food and service at a reasonable price and if you ever get to meet the owner, Jay, you'll be impressed with his knowledge and love for fine foods!
You won't regret your visit to the Salsa Grille and you can take that to the bank!

We decided to try out Salsa Grill because we found a coupon for it in the Entertainment book (students have to watch their prices...). Our visit was so memorable, we still sometimes talk about it (and that was like three years ago...). My boyfriend is a big eater, so for him the portion sizes make or break a restaurant, and he was definitely impressed with how full he could get in this place. Also, he loves Central and Southern American food (I do too), and this place was definitely up to his standards. And his standards are worth something, not only because he is a connoisseur of all kinds of food, but also because he went to culinary school himself and has worked in restaurants for years!
We were impressed not only with the food, but also with the owner, who turned out to be a super nice and interesting man. He just came out to talk to us about the food and the restaurant, he told us about how a fire in the restaurant turned out to be a blessing in that it enabled him to renovate the kitchen and make it a state-of-the-art place, and he even treated us to a free piece of strawberry cheesecake, which, again, my boyfriend loved (I cannot eat dairy, so I'll have to trust him on this one :)).
We loved the place so much, that when my out-of-town siblings came to visit on Easter, this is where we took them (and it was a long ride to get there...). They ordered the goat meat stew and loved the taste and the portion size :).
Lately we have moved to the East side of Baltimore county, but whenever we have something to take care of on the West side, Salsa Grill is what we think of first! Whenever we go back to Salsa Grill, we always leave full and happy!

We went to lunch here yesterday. I'd lived in the area, but never really noticed it as much more than a carryout. I was sure glad one of my lunch partners recommended it. I had
Escabeche de Mariscos, which I'd never had before. I was very pleasantly surprised at how delicious this was, fish, shrimp, veggies, g-r-r-eat!!
On top of the delicous food (my lunch partners had crabcakes, which looked great!), our waitress was very friendly and attentive. The owner came out and conversed with us after he asked us how everything was. He went into detail about getting the fish, very pleasant, and an excellent touch!
I will be going back there very soon. There was a steady line of customers picking up carryout orders. I'll definitely be in that line!
Run, don't walk to this excellent, hidden gem.

I am new to the Baltimore area and The Salsa Grill is in the area. I must also say that the citizens of Baltimore don't expect much from a restaurant because this one came recommended by a co-worker and I can't understand why. The prices are unwarranted. I ordered an 8.00 Jalapeno Sausage sub which ended up being two hot dogs on an oversized bun.. I asked for peppers and onion. I was charged 50 cent for two strips of green pepper even though I was told that I could have anything on it. It always amazes me how the chef thinks he can throw some poorly cut vegetables on a dish and think this is what a customer wants to be served. Do not fool yourself about the Paella either. It is not good. It is a shameful example of how food shouldn't be prepared. The owner is totally deluded if he thinks his meals are first rate. The only thing first rate here are the prices. The service is laughable. The attitudes of the workers that speak English are hostile and rude. I just added The Salsa Grill on my list of places I will never return to.
I took my girlfriend to this place expecting some reasonably priced Mexican food considering the small size and mediocre environment. Immediately we noticed the lunch menu was mostly in the double digits and the plates were oversized. This wouldn't be so bad if not for the ""Split Dishes Cost $2 EXTRA"" note at the bottom of the menu. I have never in my life been charged an extra $2 because I didn't want to eat a whole dish by myself.
After ordering our food our we waited a considerable amount of time. The waitress never checked up on drinks, even when she stopped at our table when my girlfriend flagged her down for more sauce. The food was rather greasy and overpriced. When we were ready to go, there was no waitress to be found. My gilfriend had to approach the counter to ask for carryout boxes and was essentially ignored. I came back and got the boxes, then had to make two more trips to ask for our check. Overall, I'd say this place is overpriced, poor service, too small, and certainly worth avoiding if you don't want to waste your time or money.
The small restaurant's atmosphere was pleasant at first; however the customer service/pricing was not up to my standards. My waitress didn't check up on our table, the drinks werent refilled, food taste bad and she not friendly. They even charge $2.00 for splitting a large entree! Overall, I would not recommend this place to anyone! :(

The carne asada melts in your mouth and where can you go for a strip loin cooked to perfection for less than $20. I also highly recommend the caribbean paella and the empanadas and polo con arroz and .... . The restaurant is not licensed but you can bring your own wine or beer if you like. The owner can often be found there. It's wonderful, we eat there fairly regularly. If you are taking a large group I would recommend making reservations.
