Electrocardiogram
Electrodiagnostic medicine is the electrophysiologic evaluation of muscle and nerve injury and disease processes via electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS). In simple terms, our bodies are run on electricity. Most people are familiar with an EKG. An EKG measures the electric activity of the heart muscle. An EMG needle examination measures the electric activity of skeletal muscles which are the muscles found in our upper limbs, lower limbs and back.

Traumatic nerve injuries can come in the common form of cervical or lumbar radiculopathies, cumulative trauma injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, and more devastating peripheral nerve injuries to the radial nerve, sciatic nerve or peroneal nerve. Such traumatic nerve injuries can result in permanent pain, numbness, weakness and paralysis. Permanent traumatic peripheral nerve injuries may require custom bracing. The proper orthotic (bracing) prescription is also a medical area of expertise of Dr. Hennessey and Dr. Kozakiewicz.

A 48 year old obese lady with a history of hypothyroidism and three childbirths was diagnosed with bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome. She works as a medical secretary. The claim was allowed for bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome. She underwent bilateral carpal tunnel release surgeries. She reported persistent complaints of pain and numbness in her hands six months after her time of surgery at the time of her independent medical evaluation. Most often the sacroiliac (SI) joint injuries are not revealed on a plain x-ray or an MRI. A diagnostic and potentially therapeutic test would involve the injection of a corticosteroid agent and anesthetic agent under fluoroscopy (x-ray guidance) into the joint to evaluate for pain relief.

A person with a peripheral nerve disease process, from such entities as diabetes, alcoholism, chemotherapy, vitamin B deficiency, or otherwise, is more predisposed to developing entrapment neuropathies, including but not limited to carpal tunnel syndrome.

Whiplash
By medical definition, whiplash is an injury whereupon the injured person that is in a motor vehicle is rear-ended by another motor vehicle. This creates the anatomic phenomenon of hyperextension (the neck bends excessively backwards, followed by hyperflexion (the neck bends forward-chin to chest). With the backward compressive forces, the facet joints, disc and nerve roots can get injured. With the hyperflexion portion of the injury, muscles and ligaments often get stretched beyond their normal anatomic limit and therefore injured.

Both Dr. Hennessey and Dr. Kozakiewicz have experience and training in interpreting imaging studies including x-rays and MRIs. The doctors therefore serve as a “one stop shop” with the ability to perform the clinical history, physical examination, review of imaging studies and electrodiagnostic studies if needed in order to provide a comprehensive neuromuscular assessment of a patient. We routinely prescribe medications, perform injections, prescribe formal physical therapy as well as home exercise and work closely with local and regional orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons and interventional spine injection specialists.
