I will never return to this place again. We were greeted by some rude guy with grey hair who acted like he was doing us a favor to seat us. The server was prompt but had little knowledge of the food and could'nt answer basic questions about the menu. The food came fast but tasted terrible, I could have done a better job in my own kitchen. For the price it just is'nt worth it. It may have been good once but something terrible has happened to this place. Even the dessert was bad. How do you mess that up? Take my advice and stay away.

I've gone to Bert's since... well, since it opened as a hole in the wall. The new location has more space and is certainly cleaner, but as was true before, they don't focus on the ambience, which makes it great for families and more a place to take food home from for couples that want some quiet (though early and late hours are fine). They still show major local sports--they cater to the locals. I'm not crazy about that part, but really, who cares when a pound of mussels is $5 on many nights or half-priced specials and notifications of ""wow, we got in the most gorgeous grouper"" (and they are right) are sent out by email. They do have wine tasting dinners that cater to the more refined crowd, along with supporting local artists continually.
While I am, as someone raised learning how to make the same things they do there, particular about what I see being ""worth getting"" in terms of effort/cost since I know the local fishmongers around, I have a handful of wow-oh-wow things I will always get, not to mention it is the BEST DESSERT ANYWHERE around here. When I feel rough, THAT is therapy! White chocolate banana bread pudding, ""death by chocolate"" which is new but wowish, the BEST key lime pie you'll find, chocolate pecan pie (just like chocolate chess pie I grew up lusting for)... rich and always perfect-they even managed to, when I was in the hospital, get creme brulee out of the ramekin looking nothing short of beautiful.
One ""eh"" I will say-appetizers are nothing really incredible aside from soups and some specials they will run. I've never gotten a piece of fish less than 6oz (and that was beautifully pink tuna steak), so I dunno what the complaints on portions were, especially w/sweet potatoes etc.
Also give them major props for 18 years of feeding the homeless on Thanksgiving (4500+ meals in 2006, and I was there, watching one heck of a dedicated owner reach out!)

Bert's has gone through some changes. The emphasis is more on the presentation, and not on the quality. The management is attentive, but the portions are smaller than they were when it was in its old location. The attempt at ambiance is not successful. I'm disappointed in the direction the restaurant has gone. I know this sounds rough, but for the price, and the expectations I have from having been there before, it isn't as good.

Recently went on a Sunday evening with my boyfriend (who lives in Greensboro, I live in NYC) in an attempt to enjoy some fine dining with a little ambiance. Unfortunately, we didn't get either. The ambiance was lacking - great place for families and large groups (as evidenced by the many that were dining that evening). The waitstaff was very friendly, pretty attentive and helpful but their uniforms didn't really match the decor (uniforms comparable to that of fast food joint). Our meals didn't disappoint us, but suggest the chef nix the attempts to be gourmet/make gourmet designs as they tended to look anything but (ie. tartar sauce in the shape of $ signs). All in all its a good bargain but skip it if you are looking for a place to have a romantic dinner w/ some ambiance.
