Sinusitis
As pointed out Asthma, Allergic Rhinitis and its associated chronic post nasal drainage and/or chronic sinusitis are 3 of the most common causes of chronic cough in children and adults.

Immunology is the science that deals with the body’s ability to fight off bacterial and viral infections. A defect in this system may lead children or adults to experience repeated infections, some of a mild nature and others that are more serious. This may include ear infections, sinus infections, pneumonia, skin infections, etc.

Internal Medicine
Dr. Barry Zeffren comes from a family of physicians. He is a board certified allergist, receiving 2 years of specialty training in the field of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology for children and adults at the world renown Department of Allergy at Saint Louis University Medical Center. He also completed a 3 year residency in Internal Medicine at a Washington University affiliated hospital receiving board certification in Internal Medicine.
Lung Cancer
Other common causes include chronic sinusitis which can trigger cough, either due to increased thick post nasal drainage or through a nerve reflex where the inflammation in the sinuses can exacerbate inflammation/cough in individuals with underlying Asthma. Depending on a patient’s medical history and physical findings other causes can be considered as well, including, Pneumonia, Congestive Heart Failure and Lung Cancer amongst others. Other causes of chronic cough in children include post viral cough, inhaled foreign bodies and habitual coughing.

X-Rays
Computed Tomography
In addition the Allergist will administer pulmonary function tests to determine objectively whether any underlying asthma exists. Additional tests may include chest x-ray and CT scan of sinuses to evaluate for any evidence of infection in the lung or sinuses. Specific blood tests are utilized to evaluate for presence of an underlying immunodeficiencies when indicated.

Eczema

Allergies
For patients who have never been seen by a board-certified allergist, allergy testing may be required. It is the most accurate and cost effective way to identify allergies. Skin testing is usually performed on the arms (or on the backs of very small children) using a plastic device resembling a TB tine test. Most small children do not mind them because it is remarkably painless. The results are known within fifteen minutes after testing. The skin tests do not cause any symptoms other than itching. If any tests cause a reaction, a cream will be applied to alleviate the irritation. Symptoms usually dissipate within 30 minutes.
