The parental units and I drove down to Girdwood yesterday, looking for a good place to eat "locally" that wasn't tourist-trapped and overdone. We're Alaskans. We're perfectly okay with a hole-in-the-wall "locals" place.
This place defied expectations. I had the Bacon & Blue Cheese burger. o.O
Spectacular. The blue cheese was particularly funky as only a good blue cheese can get, and the bacon was a superb addition to the Angus pattie. The entire burger itself was overwhelmingly delish. I could only eat half (paired with a Glacier Hef - they serve beer, no liquor) and later last night I had the other half as dinner. The onion rings that came with my order were perfectly breaded, nice and crispy, not soggy at all. The onion inside was delightfully sweet.
My parents had appropriate breakfast dishes, and my oh my.... I've never seen anyone wolf down a breakfast meal as fast! The omelet with reindeer sausage and mushrooms was literally stuffed to the gills. You have to be careful ordering when eating out, usually you get a nice omelet but nothing to write home about, am I right? Not at the Silvertip. This omelet was *bursting*. Absolutely wonderful omelet, fresh flavors, fresh ingredients, all superb. The marbled rye was delightful, and the potatoes served were crispy and flavorful as well. The other parental unit had the steak and eggs, and it was also wolfed down in record time. The steak was perfectly medium rare, and the eggs were gorgeous.
We also ordered several items "to go"... as you can really tell the quality of an establishment's delights after things have had time to cool down. We ordered a bit for dinner later that evening: French Onion soup, the brat, and the turkey/swiss and roast beef/swiss sliders. All exceeded expectation!!!!
Now, on to the service. We were greeted at the door by warm and welcoming smiles, both from front of house and back of house. And, our server (who doubles as the bar manager) was always there for refills if needed, and the occasional oddball request and good conversation in the midst of serving others.
The atmosphere was extremely "Alaska".... you won't find suit and ties here. And that's what we were looking for. Good food, good people, good times.
At the Silvertip, you'll find it.
