Dental Examination
X-rays
TMJ can be diagnosed by either your dentist or doctor. They will discuss your symptoms and do a physical examination of your jaw, observing your range of motion and checking for areas of discomfort or pain. If a problem is suspected, they may recommend dental X-rays, a CT scan, or an MRI to look deeper into the problem.

Teeth Cleaning
Regular and thorough teeth cleaning is crucial when wearing braces. Make sure to brush your teeth 2-3 times per day, ideally after meals. Flossing is also very important. You can use a threader or other special tool to make this a little easier. Flossing gets rid of the residue and harmful germs that can live between your teeth, eventually leading to cavities and tooth decay.

Dental Bonding

Deep Cleaning
Removable retainers should be cleaned every day when removed. Because it is still wet, it’s easier to remove any bacteria or debris that have formed while worn. Removable retainers should also be washed after meals. Using your toothbrush to lightly scrub your retainer is a step that should be added to your daily oral hygiene routine. If you’re looking for a deep cleaning method, consider soaking your retainer in warm water with gentle dish soap.

Dental Implants
Older teens may need an implant-supported palatal expansion. As you approach adulthood, your jaw begins to settle and finishes developing. If this is the case, your doctor may use this treatment to widen the jaw. Screws are implanted directly into the roof of the mouth to apply pressure against the upper jaw.

Oral Surgery
Upon graduating from the Orthodontic Department at the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in 1985, Dr. Parris served as a Clinical Instructor in the College of Dentistry. He was then promoted to Assistant Professor and assigned to the Graduate Orthodontic Department, where he assisted orthodontic residents in diagnosing, treatment planning, and treating orthodontic patients. Due to his experience on the local cleft lip palate team, Dr. Parris was asked to teach the Interdisciplinary Seminars to the orthodontic, pediatric dental, and oral surgery residents. The cleft team then became associated with Baptist Memorial Hospital, and Dr. Parris subsequently held a staff appointment with the hospital.
Jaw Surgery
Orthognathic surgery can correct minor and major dental and skeletal irregularities, usually correcting misalignment of the teeth and jaw. It can treat a number of issues.
