My wife and I are about to have our first baby, and she informs me that she wants "shiplap" in the baby room. Of course, I've never even heard of shiplap (I don't even know if I'm spelling it correctly now), and certainly have no idea how to give my wife the baby room that she wants. JoshBartlett found the best quality materials at the best price and dedicated 2 entire days to working on this room for us. He did shiplap on one wall and painted the entire room. This company will promise you everything to get you into a contract, but once you sign, forget about it. There were issues identified during the home inspection, walk-thru, and final walk-thru, that to this day have not been resolved. On the day of closing, I was promised these issues would be taken care of before I finished signing the papers, and that was a lie. I foolishly believed they would follow through on their word, but that was a huge mistake. To get these issues taken care of I had to submit a work order through the home warranty. However, they have not yet fixed these issues. FOUR times, I have been given a day and time of when their contractor would come and they have been a no-show each time. Additionally, the companies is still building homes in the subdivision and their contractors are so disrespectful of those who currently live here. They leave tons of dirt, rocks, trash, and nails in the road, and they blast music from the homes they are working on from early in the morning to late in the evening. I asked a painter to turn the music down and he told me to call the police because they wouldn't do anything. They are great and responsive until you sign your contract, and everything after that is nightmare. BUYERS BEWARE!
We purchased a home in December 2014 from Norfolk homes in the Paddock Place neighborhood in Mt. Juliet, TN. We have been extremely happy with everything thus far. We did not build with Norfolk-- the home was already completed when we purchased so I cannot speak to any of the issues with timing that some other reviewers have had. I will say though that they did a fantastic job on fixing everything and getting everything ready before we closed. There was one cabinet that had to be ordered that was not completed when they closed and I got a call this week that it was ready to be installed. We have called the local office once on one issue (which was quickly resolved) and once we called the emergency line (when we had an ice dam which was not to the fault of the build) and we got a call back pretty quickly.I've been impressed with their response to questions/concerns and we are extremely happy with our new house. We had a contractor come in to add crown moulding in a lot of rooms and the contractor even commented how straight the walls were--something he said goes to show how well built the house was.So far so good. We love our new house!
I was glad to see this small local company that has been in business for decades won best builder honors in The Tennessean and Nashville Scene awards. Their work stands out amongst a crowd. Their main projects right now are kitchen and bath remodels and room additions. They are known in the area for outdoor kitchens and pool areas that are like no other.
I will update later.. but my home was supposed to be done end of June 2013... then August 30 .. now who knows when it will be done.. there hasn't been a worker out there in two weeks.. Word has it they don't pay their subcontractors.. So now I am in a predicament since their contract says they have two years to complete the home.. even though they tell you six months...mean while I will be homeless for an undetermined amount of time and interest rates are climbing that even if I qualify for the loan I will have to eat ramen ...I would suggest you use another contractor.
In Need of a Craftsman for Kitchen RemodelI was in need of a true Nashville craftsman for a kitchen remodel in a historic home. We needed to expand the space, yet keep the flow. I had heard about Coleman Construction when they renovated the historic Martin Home in Richland. Their work was posted in The Tennessean. I was in the market for a custom home I wanted to be built in Nashville and designed from bottom up and was looking for a top of the line custom designer. I wanted a home like no other, but had to stick to a set budget. I felt at ease when I first spoke with Skeeter and before you knew it, we were drawing up plans (or at least he was). I’d definitely encourage anyone looking for a custom builder to at least meet and talk to Skeeter and his crew at Coleman Construction.
It is not every day that you run across a great contractor with amazing design ideas that he can actually build like a craftsman. This company has won several awards for renovating historic homes. They care about the integrity of the house and don't stop until it is done right and to your satisfaction. I am a happy customer, to say the least.

But even with all of this information, there are still many jobs that lie far outside the scope of most DIY enthusiasts. General contractors are there to fill in this gap.

Be as clear and concise as possible regarding what you'll be purchasing yourself and what you will be paying the contractor to complete. Homeowners may be able to find a better deal on raw materials when they purchase these directly, but they first need to be sure they aren't buying the wrong things.

This can come in handy if a contractor has his or her own payment issues with their subcontractors. Signing a lien release form certifies that any payment made by a client to the contractor is enough to pay for any goods or services rendered. A lien dispute could also be prevented by performing due diligence prior to picking a contractor, as any contractor with good credit and a long track record of satisfied clients should have no trouble paying for materials and labor once all contract conditions have been met.
Once work is underway, it's never a bad idea to check up on the progress of the job, either by staying in touch with the contractor over the phone or visiting the site in person. If you work with a trustworthy professional, it's probably best to keep your distance and allow everyone to stay busy. If you want to keep an eye on things, make sure workers wear the right safety gear and that everything looks to be moving along according to schedule. Finally, once work is finished and you are satisfied, be sure to thank your contractor and tell friends or family members about your experience.
