Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery has undergone tremendous technological advances since the days of your parents and grandparents. As one of Indiana’s leading cataract and refractive surgeons, J. Rex Parent, M.D. was one of eleven physicians in the United States (out of 17,500 ophthalmologists) who participated in the national study leading to FDA approval for the first “multifocal” intraocular lens and the first surgeon in the Midwest to implant a multifocal lens. Dr. Parent implanted his first multifocal IOL in 1984 during this study.
Eye Exam
Often the early stages of diabetic retinopathy have no visual symptoms. That is why it is imperative that everyone with diabetes have a comprehensive dilated eye examination once a year. Early detection and treatment can limit the potential for significant vision loss from diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that occurs in people who have diabetes. It causes progressive damage to the retina, the light-sensitive lining at the back of the eye. Diabetic retinopathy is a serious sight-threatening complication of diabetes.

Ultrasound
The procedure consists of numbing the eye with drops, followed by removing the lens from the eye with an ultrasound-vacuum device though a micro-incision. A Femtosecond laser can be used to increase precision of the procedure by creating more exact surgical incisions and correcting astigmatism. A foldable multifocal implant is then inserted through the micro-incision. The procedure is often completed in 10-15 minutes. The recovery time is very rapid, usually within a few days. Only one eye is done at a time, but the second eye can be done within a week or two.

Dr. Ponugoti is a board-certified ophthalmologist who graduated from Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. She did her internship at MacNeal Hospital in Oak Park, Illinois and her residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Dr. Ponugoti has been providing surgical services at The Eye Center of Fort Wayne since 2013. Dr. Ponugoti has extensive experience with cataract surgery, multifocal intraocular implants, toric intraocular implants and RELACS (Refractive Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery).
