Dear Public, I have not secured him for surveying of any Marine work, but he is definitely NOT A MAN OF INTEGRITY. Please be mindful. Do your homework. Thank you!
i really don't know where to start . I asked for a pre purchase survey. He quotes me $2500 +$300 for a captain for sea trials . At the end of the first day he told me the boat was horrific and nothing would work and I'd never get insurance for it. I told him not to go back the second day even if the owner sorted the batteries to start it . I asked for a refund for the second day and for not writing up a report . My reply was .. I'll give you a discount on the next boat or I'll take you out for very special meal . (I'm a woman ) I refused the meal but said out of awkwardness I'd maybe meet him for a drink . However when I found another boat he quoted me almost double from what other surveyors were and this was meant to be with a discount . When I eventually told him I had found someone cheaper I got insulted . This man is very unprofessional and I will be taking this to court to get my money back .
We contracted to purchase a Pursuit 3070 in Ft Lauderdale. The boat had the Yamaha 225's so we knew this would be the potential weak spot. We agreed on a date/time for Kurt to do the survey for $1300 which included $200 for oil sample analysis. Prior to the survey, he told me we could stop anytime if anything major was found. I asked him to start with the engines as I did not want to waste a bunch of money surveying a boat we would not buy if there were major engine problems. To justify his price he told me he would spend from 8:30 until 4 or 5pm with the boat and then spend until 11pm or so typing the report. He said he would start by checking the engine compression, then move into the cockpit and cabin, followed by a sea trial, and then have it hauled out to check the hull. He started at 8:30. After surveying the cockpit and cabin first, he then moved on to the engines. Just before noon he called to tell me there was low compression on multiple cylinders of both engines. I told him to stop immediately. He did and then proceeded to send me a bill for $1100 (which was the amount for the full survey minus the oil analysis). After disputing the amount charged he agreed to lower it to $800 saying that was the least he could take for "a day." Even though he didn't start with the engines as requested and he had only worked 3.5-4 hours... I decided not to argue as he did save us a lot of money... OR SO I THOUGHT. The boat was extremely well maintained and the seller apologized profusely saying he couldn't believe there was a compression issue. The next day the seller decided to have his marina do a leak down test and check the compression. No issues were found. For further verification, he then hired a certified Yamaha tech to check the compression. All cylinders were within 5lbs. Another buyer swooped in and agreed to purchase the boat pending a survey. The new buyer surveyed the boat and closed the purchase as no major issues were found. Not only did I miss out on a great boat, I'm out $800 as well.
