Cryotherapy
A retinal detachment is treated surgically, in an outpatient facility or hospital. The two most common methods of treatment are scleral buckling and vitrectomy. Another technique is called pneumatic retinopexy. The latter two procedures use a gas bubble in the eye to temporarily hold the treated tear in place. All three surgical procedures use cryotherapy (freezing) or lasers to seal the retinal tear. The gas bubble then disappears on its own and is replaced by normal eye fluid.

Primary Care
Unfortunately, most patients have a significant decrease in vision. As this condition is essentially a stroke affecting a retinal artery, it will be necessary to see a neurologist and follow-up closely with a primary care physician. It may be necessary to perform additional testing and manage the systemic diseases are associated with this condition.

Glaucoma
The large majority of people who gets BRVOs are over the age of 50. This condition can occur spontaneously without any associated systemic diseases. However, it is frequently associated with hypertension (or high blood pressure), atherosclerosis, and diabetes. It is debatable as to whether not glaucoma is an associated risk factor. More rarely, a BRVO can be associated with disorders of the blood that make it more likely for clotting to occur, which we sometimes see with younger patients.

Cataract Surgery
The inside cavity of the eye is filled with a gel-like material called vitreous. When people are young, this material is dense, like jelly. As part of the aging process, the gel begins to liquefy and become more like water. As this happens, the vitreous can shrink and pull away from the retina, the tissue that lines the inner surface of the eye. When the vitreous separates from the retina, this is called a posterior vitreous detachment. In addition to aging, a posterior vitreous detachment is especially common in people who have had cataract surgery or are nearsighted.

He earned his Medical Degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine and completed an internship in Internal Medicine, Beth Israel Medical Center, New York. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at The New York Dr. David A. GlaserEye and Ear Infirmary and where he served as “Chief Resident”. Dr. Glaser received additional training as a fellow in Retina and Vitreous Surgery and Disease at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Glaser is Board-Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Glaser has been a clinical investigator in many clinical trials and has made presentations at national medical meetings.

Branch retinal vein occlusions, together with central retinal vein occlusions, are the 2nd most common disorder of the retinal blood vessels after diabetic retinopathy.

Ultrasound
A fluorescein angiogram is a test (please refer to the pamphlet Fluroescein Angiography for more) which may be performed to demonstrate blockage of the affected artery. Other tests are often performed in conjunction with your primary care physician to identify systemic diseases associated with retinal arterial occlusions. These may include a carotid Doppler ultrasound, echocardiogram, and blood tests to diagnose inflammatory or blood clotting disorders.
