Horrible Experience -- DO NOT hire SMB Construction!

A bathtub overflowed in our 110 year old century home, causing damage to the living room ceiling below. I had two contractors estimate $3,000 - $5,000 repair cost, taking one to two weeks. State Farm Ins. recommended SMB Contractors as ""restorers of historic properties."" SMB ultimately caused extensive chaos and damage to my home, resulting in a final settled bill in excess of $28,000 plus, I'm told, cleaning bill charges around $16,000 to Preferred Cleaning, which is owned by SMB! This repair job took almost 5 MONTHS in which time all our furniture and glassware was displaced thoughout the first floor, leaving us with no dining room table, etc.

Jeff Heffner was the man in charge of our job. He ended up taking the entire ceiling out for a 6' damaged section, tore out irreplaceable hand made tiered molding, which was eventually recast and SMB declared they did not know how to install because it was a ""lost art."" Everything was bungled -- SMB did not remove the wall scones, breaking the antique glass candlesticks with plaster, ladders, etc., the silver door knobs came up ""missing"" as did my jewelry and a camera, the marble fireplace hearth was actually broken in two, the hardwood floor ruined by a chemical spill, the hand carved mantle divited by chiseling off globs of dried plaster. They fired and hired a total of 3 different ceiling plasters; painted over wallpaper on half of the room and removed the wallpaper from the other half, painted brass hinges and light switches, took the finish off of two lovely wood cabinets, broke my front door, etc.

We have never received any warranty and were lied to by Jeff H. ifn front of our euchre club (witnesses) that unless we signed a certificate of satisfaction, the warranty was void.

The Ringling Bros. Circus clowns could have done a better job. BEWARE OF SMB CONSTRUCTION (Toledo and Findlay) and PREFERRED CLEANING!
