It is a progressive disease of the optic nerve that is a leading cause of blindness in this country. Macular degeneration is the gradual breakdown of the macula that occurs with age. The macula is a small area in the back of the eye that allows a person to see fine detail and is responsible for central vision. The breakdown of the macula causes decreased central vision, which can affect our distance and near vision and makes such everyday tasks as facial recognition much more difficult. Many studies have revealed the frequency of this disease increases dramatically after age 60, and there are currently no available cures for the condition.

Cataract Surgery
It is not uncommon for patients to experiences what are called floaters or flashers in their field of vision. Floaters may appear like spots, line, circles, or cobwebs — they are actually present in the back of the eye and what patients see are the shadows cast on the retina. Floaters can be caused by posterior vitreous detachment and will often go away on their own. Floaters are not considered to be a serious eye issue, but they can certainly be annoying and frustrating for many patients. Patients who have had cataract surgery, are nearsighted, or have experienced swelling of the eye may be more prone to floaters.

An early stage of diabetic retinopathy is background diabetic retinopathy. In this stage, small blood vessels leak in the retina causing swelling, and deposits called exudates form. Sometimes the leaking fluid can take place in the retina causing macular edema. When the macula becomes involved it can affect your vision and close work.
