Ankle Surgery
Dr. Dustin has been teaching foot and ankle surgery in Europe, specifically Spain and Portugal, since 1998. At Universat Autonoma Medical School in Barcelona, Spain, he has taught surgical dissection and surgical anatomy to medical students, residents, and practicing physicians from all over Europe. Dr. Dustin travels to Spain at least once a year to teach doctors, in Spanish, from Spain, Portugal, France, Africa, and Italy. He has also preformed surgery as a professor of latest techniques in Porto, Portugal, as well as Elijido, Almeria, Garrucha, Cerdoanyola, Barcelona, and Alicante in Spain. He has taught bunion surgery to the National Podiatric Conference in Veracruz, Mexico. He also taught at a residency program in San Diego for six years.

Bunions form when the normal balance of joints and tendons in the foot becomes disrupted. This can lead to instability in the joint and cause the deformity. Bunions are usually brought about by years of abnormal motion and pressure, and are caused by the way we walk, our inherited foot type, and our shoes. Sometimes foot injuries, neuromuscular disorders, or congenital deformities can also cause this painful foot problem. People who suffer from flat feet or low arches are also prone to developing bunions. This type of foot pain can be easily treated. Make an appointment with one of our doctors today.
Ingrown Toenails
As well as being the early indicators of systemic diseases, our toenails can also fall victim to the most common nail complaint- ingrown toenails. This happens when corners or sides of the nail dig into the surrounding tissue, which causes pain, irritation, redness, and swelling. There are several treatments for ingrown toenails. Removing the offending part of the nail, oral antibiotics, and a procedure that can permanently prevent ingrown nails are all available. Corns
Treatment of corns can be very simple. First, the removal of the thick skin will alleviate the pain and discomfort. If you have a corn, make an appointment with your foot doctor- never try to remove a corn on your own. Second, it’s important to identify what pressure or friction caused the corn to form in the first place. For example, if they are forming as a result of poorly-fitting shoes, changing to shoes that fit well will help with this condition. Your foot doctor will be able to help you identify the reasons you have this condition, so if you have any questions, Dr. Dustin and Dr. Spencer are available to help. Third, protecting the skin from outside pressures can help with pain relief until your corns can either be removed or until your feet have adapted to any changes made. Fungus
Fungus is a common condition that attacks the feet because our shoes create a warm, dark, and wet environment, which is where fungi grow the best. The symptoms of foot fungus are dry skin, itching, scaling, inflammation, and blistering. It’s difficult to prevent this type of infection because there can be tiny bacteria wherever we walk barefoot, but good foot hygiene does help. Things like washing your feet daily, changing your shoes and socks regularly, and using a quality foot powder can be beneficial. Lesions
Even though warts are harmless, they can be really painful. They are caused by a viral infection, and tend to be hard and flat with a rough surface and well-defined boundaries. Warts are often gray or brown with a center that appears as a pinpoint of black. They can be very resistant to treatment, and have a tendency to reoccur. Bunions Problems
A bunion is an enlargement of the joint at the base of the big toe, and is a leading cause of foot pain among patients. It forms when the bone or tissue at the big toe joint moves out of place. This forces the toe to bend toward the others, causing an often painful lump of bone on the foot- a bunion. Since this joint carries a lot of the body’s weight while walking, bunions can cause extreme pain if left untreated.

A hammertoe is the result of an abnormal balance in the muscles of the toe. This imbalance puts a lot of pressure on the joints and ligaments, which make the toes bend in a painful way. There are things, fortunately, that can be done to alleviate painful symptoms and treat your hammertoes.
Heel Spurs
Heel pain is a common condition that we treat several times a day, partially because there are many different things that can cause it. Sometimes, for example, this type of pain can be a direct result of a heel spur, which is a bony growth on the underside of the heel bone. These spurs come from strain on the muscles and ligaments of the foot, which can result from biomechanical imbalances. Other times heel pain can be from excessive pronation as you walk. Too much inward motion can pull at the tendons and ligaments that attach to the bones in your feet, which causes those tendons and ligaments to become inflamed and painful. Most commonly, heel pain is caused by inflammation of a band of tissue known as the plantar fascia. This tissue connects the heel and the ball of your foot, and when it’s stretched beyond normal extension, it can tear and stretch, causing significant pain.

If you feel like you’re getting or have an ingrown toenail, try soaking your foot in warm water and Epsom salts for 15 minutes daily, and then applying Neosporin and a band aid to the area.

Plantar Fasciitis
One of the most common sources of heel pain is caused by heel spurs, which is a bony growth on the underside of the heel bone. Sometimes this spur can extend forward as much as half an inch. This condition happens when the muscles and ligaments of the foot get strained. Often times the long band of tissue connecting the heel and the ball of the foot gets stretched out, and sometimes the lining of the heel bone repeatedly tears. Another frequent cause of heel pain is called plantar fasciitis. This condition occurs when the band of fibrous connective tissue (plantar fascia) that runs along the bottom of the foot becomes inflamed. Plantar fasciitis can become a chronic problem when the plantar fascia is strained beyond its normal extension. This strain results in tearing and stretching, which causes significant pain. Another common cause of heel pain is excessive pronation. In a normal foot, as you walk your weight shifts upward and outward in order to lift the body and move it forward. When a foot pronates excessively, there is too much inward motion that can create an abnormal amount of pulling on the ligaments and tendons that attach to the bottom back of the heel bone, resulting in heel pain. Excessive pronation also contributes to lower back pain, knee pain, and hip pain. Heel pain, although sometimes stubborn and usually unpleasant, is treatable. Often times a series of injections, oral medications, night splints, and custom-molded orthotics that can adjust the biomechanical properties of your feet can help with pain relief.
