Tips & Advice
How much does it cost to customize a car?
Every modification to a car has a different price tag. You have to factor in the cost of the parts and the labor involved if you are hiring someone to do it for you. Tires and wheels can be done quickly within just about any budget, but things like internal engine modifications can add up quickly. Elaborate paint jobs or custom body work can get very expensive, as well. You can get a budget paint job for a couple-hundred bucks, or spend $25,000 on an elaborate show-quality job.
What is performance tuning?
Performance tuning is making adjustments, performing tune ups, or anything done to the car in an effort to increase performance. Usually it is associated with engine performance to increase output for more speed. But performance tuning can also be done to exhaust systems and suspension parts and, in the case of racing cars, spoilers, which do not have any performance advantage until you reach very high speeds.
Is car customization the same as modification?
Modifications and customization are basically the same. Modifications made to your car create a customized car. If you modify your engine, interior, paint, or body, it is now customized.
Is car customization legal?
Yes. Customizing a car is completely legal--as long as the vehicle still adheres to the law. There are limitations, such as engine output, tire size, window tinting, body shaping, lights, and exhaust systems (both in carbon emissions and noise). For instance, you cannot drive a car around town that has been stripped and converted into a race car--it won’t have mufflers, turn signals, lights, and many basic components that make a car street legal. Know the laws and limitations before going all-in on customizing your rig.
What is a customized car?
A customized car is one that has had significant changes done to update t style or performance. Customizing can range from making an engine faster or perform better, to elaborate pain jobs. Lowering or raising a vehicle’s suspension (think lifted trucks or low-rider cars) is customizing, and even interiors can be customized.
What are the signs that a car suspension may need service?
There are several clues that you may need to have your suspension checked. If your car rolls hard or experiences heavy swaying when cornering or turning, or if you “bottom out” (where the bottom of the vehicle scrapes the street), something could be broken or worn out. Worn tread on your tires, particularly if the wear pattern is excessive on the inside or outside of the tire, is another great clue. When you hit a speed bump or pothole, does your vehicle feel bouncy? That’s a good sign the car needs servicing. Understeering or oversteering, grinding, or clicking noises from the corners of the car can be clues you need to get it checked out.
What is car air suspension?
Air suspension is when the coil springs or leaf springs are replaced with airbags that are filled via a compressor. The bags mimic the springs and provide that same support, but are considered to provide a quieter and more comfortable ride. This type of suspension is more commonly used on trucks and big rigs.
What is car suspension tuning?
Suspension tuning is basically adjusting different elements of your suspension system to provide optimum performance.Tuning can be as simple as having proper air pressure in your tires. More advanced tweaks can include shock or struts height or stiffness, the use and adjustment of anti-roll bars to reduce understeering, and camber adjustment (the angles of the tires and wheels on the road), and, of course, keeping your front end aligned. These tweaks are vital in maximizing car performance.
How long does it take to replace a car suspension?
Most individual suspension fixes or part replacements should take less than a day to complete. Parts like tires and wheels, shocks, struts, and springs should only take a couple of hours to change out. Swapping out steering systems, bushings, bearings, and joints can be more time consuming, but all of these can be done in less than a day. If you are having multiple parts replaced, you very well might be looking at a couple of days as they cannot all be worked on simultaneously. All of this depends on the availability of parts, the shop’s schedule, and the mechanic’s skill.
How much does it cost to replace a car suspension?
The cost to replace a suspension or suspension parts in a car depends on the type of suspension, the car, the parts being replaced, and the skill and trustworthiness of your mechanic. Replacing wheels and tires can be a simple task and, depending on the level of performance, can cost anywhere from a few-hundred dollars to a few-thousand. Basic shocks or struts can cost from $75 on up (each), plus installation. Costs will vary, especially depending on the type and performance level of your car. A basic Honda Civic will likely be a lot less costly than a Ferrari F-550, and independent shops are usually less expensive than dealership shops.
