Fluoride Treatment
How we treat very sensitive teeth: Our emergency dentist in East Longmeadow & Northampton will choose the appropriate method of treatment based on the reason for your sensitivity. If minor, we may recommend fluoride treatment, prescription mouthwash, or desensitizing toothpaste. If damage or infection exists, it may be necessary to apply a tooth-colored filling, administer periodontal therapy or root canal therapy, or extract the tooth to avoid further harm to your oral health.
Dental Sealants
The back teeth are by far the most likely to develop cavities due to their location and deep grooves that easily trap plaque, bacteria, and food particles. Fillings

Previous amalgam fillings relied on mechanical retention to hold the filling, wherein composite is bonded to the actual tooth. Amalgam fillings, over time, can develop micro-leakage where the filling and tooth would separate from one another, creating small areas that could harbor bacteria. The composite material creates an impenetrable seal between the filling and tooth and can be a very conservative way to treat a cavity.
Resin Composite
A dental filling is used to restore a tooth that has been affected by decay or trauma. Traditionally, in the past, teeth were filled with amalgam or silver filling material which contained mercury. Now, as dental materials have evolved, we have access to a more modern dental filling material called composite. Composite resin is non-toxic, bonds to the existing tooth structure, light-cured, and tooth-colored! Patients can enjoy a more aesthetically pleasing look in addition to a safer and stronger alternative to amalgam.

Root Canal Treatment
Anytime a tooth sustains an injury due to decay or a fracture, there is always the possibility that the tooth will need future root canal therapy. When a patient is experiencing constant pain and increased dental sensitivity, it is likely the tooth has sustained an irreversible pulpitis or has developed an abscess. An irreversible pulpitis is inflamed dental pulp or nerve tissue within a tooth that often leads to an abscess or a painful infection that occurs at the apex of the root.
