This is my local pub, I didn't know the older Gallagher's. There's only 3 pubs in Dublin, this is easily the best. It's a little bit tricky to find, but it's in the Big Lots shopping center in the alley down past Round Table pizza.
Monday: Free pool (2 tables)
Wednesday: Acoustic guitar (presently alternatives between 2 guys)
Friday: Sometimes a live band
Yes, there are creepy people ultimately in any bar you go to, but this feels very safe, and everyone looks out for each other, including people who've not been there before. There's always someone to talk to, including the bartenders.
Most nights it doesn't get busy until after 9.30pm, so pick your time appropriately.

Actually Gallaghers Dublin Pub is owned by James Gallaghers (the ""old man"" you reffered to) Daughter Sunshine Gallagher, Yea two of his children are no longer there but it is still a ""Family"" run Buisness, his Grandchildren are even working there now. This place has made great strides and improved a lot, its not dark and quite anymore its a livley fun place to go drink for people of any age. They have Karaoke on Tuesdays and Live Bands on Friday nights, NO COVER! The drinks are priced well and the bartenders are actually friendly now! I would try this place for sure if you havent yet!

ever since this place moved across the patio and built a new bar, Gallaghers has become what I would like to call a ""safe"" place to go out, drink with friends and have a really fun time with out all the hassel of creepy people, especially late at night, watching you. And, the cops don't bother them much at all. Oh, it's nice to be able to ""sit"" down in a bar bathroom and not worry!! really nice, great bartenders too!

How many bars can you go to where the bartender will offer you a slice of pizza if they happen to have one behind the bar? A little gritty (they allow smoking - ask for a tin ash tray), and it's a somewhat rougher but all-around-nice crowd. There's TV's for sports, dart games, and a pool table. The bar is in the center of the room, so you get a ""round-table"" effect at the bar. Charming/smoky/good for a cheap drink... a good stop off or place to end up.
