Whether you are in Downtown Detroit for a Tigers, Red Wings or Lions game, or at the Auto Show or whatever, you have to stop at Lafayette Coney Island. They do coney dogs and they do it better than anybody else. They're not on the Food Network and Travel Channel all the time for no reason. The place is a Detroit Landmark. People on here are complaining about the decor? Dude, it's an old place that has character! The waiters aren't the friendliest guys in the world but that is the farthest thing from my mind when I'm there. It's all about the coney dogs man. World leaders eat coney dogs at this place. Famous athletes make it a point to eat here. You come in, order your food and drink and it's at your table in a few minutes, 5 minutes at most if it's PACKED. Me, personally, I order a coke, coney with everything and a slice of apple pie every time. It gets better every time I go there, which is basically whenever I'm downtown. Do yourself a favor and go there. Order a coney or two with everything. If you didn't know, these hot dogs are to be eaten with a fork because they're loaded with chili. And when I say chili, I mean the best coney dog chili in the world.

Absolutely the best coney in Detroit. The sealer is the chili, get a good whiff and you nose will involuntarily quiver in anticipation. I can't be in the area without getting a dog. Love when I see Lafayette full of Red Wing fans. Bar none this is the best!

this place is awesome usually lol every once in a while you might catch a waiter in a bad mood but they are always there and its to be expected if you know that working in a restaraunt myself i know sometimes waiters have bad days so to the people saying there waiter was moody it happens and with how busy they are its understandable with that being said it is almost always the best service and real fast foods always hot and fresh the bathroom is awesome and the waiters can show you some cool things lol and chili cheese frys are always a must with onions added decently priced also and a great atmosphere with everyone talking to everyone they actually remember our names and all the other ""usuals"" names lol and everytime you go in they will all yell and greet you and ive never seen a place where every waiter can carry literally atleast 15 plates at once with no tray overall usually an incredibly great place the only reason its 4 not 5 stars is every once in a while the moody staff but almost never

I went to Lafayette Coney Island for the first time in December, 2009 with a friend who grew up in Detroit and who just loves this place. I grew up in Brooklyn, NY and spent many summer days enjoying hot dogs by the ocean at Nathan's in the ""real"" Coney Island. I love places that are down-to-earth and not full of themselves. This place is just such a place and it made me laugh and smile to see my friend's face come alive as if she was a child again as she was when she enjoyed the chili dogs here years ago. As for myself, I found the dogs to be just ok, sloppy but fun to eat. The service was good and the waiter was happy to know we had traveled so far (from NY) to visit this fun place.

I have to suspect that these four- and five-star reviews are based more on nostalgia and late-night drunken visits than they are based on the quality of this place.
Our service was so bad, we were laughing. It's one thing to be ""no frills;"" I can appreciate that if it's done in a charming and intentional way. But there's a line between that and just plain rudeness. The waiter practically threw our drinks at us and never came back after he brought the food. Just preposterous. And we wanted more food!
Of course I don't expect anyone to have a similar experience; I'm not suggesting it's ""always"" like that (though maybe it is). Still, I can't write a review without mentioning it.
Dogs we ordered were great, but, really, have you ever had a bad coney? Fries were cold and seemed like they would have been average at best even if they were hot.
I won't be going back.

What, are you NUTS? This place ROCKS!!! I won't go ANYWHERE ELSE for my coneys with Greek Salad and/or coney fries. This is the best dog you can find, open at ANY TIME!! NO WONDER Emeril chose THIS coney island (and NOT the one next door) for his ""Best of"" list!
American Coney Island is right next to Lafayette Coney Island. I like American the best. Some people like Lafayette the best. They both serve the same menu however American is has a brighter decor. Both coney places are good after a night of partying or a day of ice skating!

Every detroit father should make this coney his son's/daughter's first. From the simplistic decor to the fast, friendly service Lafayette Coney is a detroit icon that reigns over all others. Best dogs, best chili, the best. I wish i was eating one right now!

You just got to love this place...ask for the milk...and watch them pour it in a glass from arms length! If you want to be pampered like some suburb dog places then stay away...but if you know what you want and you know how to ask for itthen come on in...No fuss, just sit or stand and tell THE DOG PROS what you want and they will give it to you, and I have personally had a TO-GO order for twenty dogs and 10 frys filled in under 2 minutes! And yes, some of Detroits finest eat there and they only eat the best dogs. YepYou just got to love this place!!

You're leaving a double-overtime Red Wings game and you're starving. Where do you go? Lafayette or American Coney Island! Set your expectations accordingly. Don't expect ""fancy."" This is NOT that kind of place. This is a place where hot dogs snap with flavor, and Michigan chilli fries get covered with cheese & onions. This is a roll-your-sleeves up, blue-collar kind of place. The waiters bark your order...they don't write it down (too fancy)! You're as likely to sit next to a bank president as a homeless person at the counter. If you see a guy bumming a dog, give your waiter a couple of bucks to get the guy some food. Manners? You don't come here for manners....you come here for the dogs, man! Loose burgers, combos, chili fries with cheese...loadem up with onions and a stripe of mustard...now that's Detroit!

Our first visit to Lafayette Coney Island was our last. When we entered the restaurant, we noticed there were 4 people working and five seated customers. We were told to take a seat and asked what we'd like. We asked for two coney's with everything. In a few minutes the waiter returned and dropped the plates on the table. While we were eating we noticed there were dirty dishes stacked in the sink and the floor was cluttered with litter. After we finished the meal the waiter asked if we would like something to drink. We said no and paid the bill.

My wife and I visited the American Coney Island for the first time and had a ball. The service was fantastic and the food was excellent. We were impressed by the cheerful decor and overall cleanliness. Next time we're in the ""D"", the American Coney will be our first stop.
