J Benjamins has always been a favorite of mine and has some of the best food in Des Moines. The atmosphere makes a great date spot and Simon is always making you feel at home. Simon, the new owner, will usually greet you at the door and seat you. He also brings you wine and dessert after you are finished. Every time we have gone, he has walked us back out to our car. The service at J Benjamins is superior to that of the 801 Steak and Chop house. If you need a good place for a quiet dinner, go to J Bens.

Old Chicago tries to present itself as the most "happening" place in town. Sorry, folks; I just don't see it. The food is not bad, but it lacks any real flavor or distinction. The tables are tiny; the noise level is awful; and the prices are high. I can get better pizza in at least six other restaurants and pay less each time. I've been there twice, and that's all I need.
Like several other "classic" restaurants in Des Moines, La Pizza Hoouse looks like it needs a good decorator who was born after 1960. However, once you get past that, the food makes up for the lack of pizazz. Wonderful, wonderful pizza and great raviolli. Good sandwiches and salads, too. This is one of those places that I hope is still around in another 50 years.
Chinese ribs appetizer: damn good. Meatza pizza: loaded with proteins and pretty darn good. A 10" is plenty for one guy's appetite. Tiki Drinks time (Zombie & Pineapple Express): very tasty and very strong beverages. Don't DRIVE afterwards LOL Staff are friendly and attentive: decor is funky and fun. Get here early or late, and yes, do buy the t-shirt as a souvenir :)
It is a family style restaurant and has a very full menu of items and all them good food. Their pizza's are excellant and their onion rings are the best in the City of Des Moines. Owners are on premise and come out among their customers talking and visiting with them. A really friendly atmosphere. Give this place a try and you will not be sorry. Judy Neff
The food at J Benjamins is really great. It is not fast food and it is a small place and tight eating area. The food is moderatly priced, but you get what you pay for. You never leave hungry and it is a quaint little place. You can try to make reservations, but it appears to be first come first serve anyway.
Food is excellent. I don't live nearby, so I have to drive a little distance to go, so I haven't been often, but it is so worth the extra time to drive. The other day, I made the drive and invited two friends to come with me, but was dismayed to find it closed. On a Wednesday. Are you closed for the winter?
The thin crust pizza is hot, fresh, and tasty. The pasta and salads are good, too. The place tends to be a bit noisy and crowded, especially on a week-end, but that's what happens when you're good. I love to go on a week night when things aren't quite so hectic.
This is the best pizza ever! The onion rings and cheese sticks are good to. I just wished they would move to the Merle Hay area so I could get it brought to me. :o) But I love the food there!
I can't believe this place seriously will deliver not only amazing pizza to my house, but excellent tacos and cheeseburgers too! Holy cow! Worth checking out!
