I agree with some of the reviews below that the owner of Shapes, Richelle, is not friendly at all. She never looks me in the eye when she greets me and I always feel like she is annoyed that I am there. She answers my attempts at friendly conversation (it can be very awkward) with one word. She complains about her staff and other customers, which I find so unprofessional. She orders them around and scolds them in front of me and I feel embarrassed for her. She has done a good job on my hair for awhile, especially the color, so I continued to go to her, but I have finally had it. It puts me in the worst mood to get my hair done because she is so negative and unhappy.

I completely agree with Elizabeth's review.
I love, love, love my hair. An article in the Denver Post this past spring led to the revelation that there are actually stylists for curly hair these days. I started out at a salon close to work, with stylist who ""cuts curly"" and even though she knew that's why I was coming, blew my hair out straight like a giant helmet every time. I thought well as long as the cut is good I can work it myself. The last time I came home from the salon, my hubby asked me what happened to my head.
In between I started using one of the Deva Curl products and went to their website to find out how to use it and what others may be good for me. I found a whole new Curly Girl revolution going on, along with a search for stylist feature.
This is how I came across Jeanna. My hubby says ""do you know how many salons are between Castle Rock and Denver???"" But now that I've gone to Jeanna, I can't go back to just anyone.
Like Elizabeth, she talked me through step by step what she was doing to I could repeat the process. I haven't had my hair professionally collored in forever and she selected an awesome color for me. I told her I was completely lazy with my routine and didn't want to have to put much effort into it. Her response was that my ""styling"" would be done before I left the shower. I then just need to leave it alone to dry.. and she wasn't exagerating.
I've had tons of compliments on my hair, and people at work asking if I'd gotten a perm (do they still do those??). I'm elated to say, I am now a Curly Girl!!
Thank you Jeanna!!

I LOVE my cut! I went to Jeanna, who specializes in cutting curly hair. She did a fantastic job on my cut and gave me great instructions on how I can repeat the same steps at home, and I actually CAN! I've never had so many complements on my hair! I've had my fare share of bad curly cuts, but I will deffinately be back to JEANNA! Highly recommend this place!

I'm 58 years old, have been in Denver 36 years, have naturally curly hair and have ""changed my hairstyle so many times I don't know what I look like"" [ hat tip to David Byrne]. Actually, I do know what I look like now, and am very happy with my own Megan Maggart version of the Curly Girl haircut. Megan was able to quickly interpret my clumsy description of what I wanted my hair to look like (after I originally visited another supposed-to-be Curly Gurl stylist and got a crooked, uneven, partly straight) hair cut, and patiently explained the how and why as to what she was going to do to achieve what I wanted. Then her fingers and scissors sort of flew. I learned exactly how to clean my hair, how to condition it, and how to style and dry it. My hair has never, ever, looked so good, so healthy, so bouncy, so pretty, and so personalized. I live in the Old Littleton area of town, and will drive to Shapes (in the Highlands part of town) for Megan's cuts and styles in a snowstorm! Megan is a friendly, open person, while also very professional. She's extremely talented and not a bit snobby, and she's reasonably-priced. She does not insist her clients buy a lot of products (or any--altho the Curly Girl line is superb, and she can help you decide what you need). I am so grateful I stumbled upon the Shapes site and her name!

I followed Mary Veraldo from a shop MUCH closer to my home in Golden. The greater distance and inconvenience are nothing compared to the number of compliments I receive on my hair. Even people who know me well continue to rave about how great my hair looks, even though my ability to style my hair is so clumsy compared to Mary. The cut and the color are just so good. She also teaches me about my hair ... how to make it work best for me, how to protect it from sun and damage ... and she's just a very practical, good person. I would recommend her to anyone.

I have VERY curly hair. I am bi-racial, but my curls are tight. I have been to a few salon's in my life and left crying or having to re-style my hair when I got home.
For the first time in my life, I left a salon with a smile and not having to readjust even one hair on my head. My cut was perfect. My curls were soft and lengthened. I was also able to duplicate the look on a daliy basis after I left using the Deva products.
Megan was my stylist. She was friendly, listened carefully to what I wanted, and was knowledgeable about curly hair of all types.
I highly recommend Shapes for anyone with curls!

I found out about Shapes several months ago...I'm a very poor actress, so I wanted to wait until I could better afford everything. I got impatient, though, and really needed a good cut! During that time, however, I looked at all the reviews on NaturallyCurly and Yelp to help me decide if this would be a good fit for me.
Megan was fantastic! Very nice and pleasant...she has naturally curly hair, as well, although it was straight when I went in today. She talked me through the Deva routine & products, explaining every step of the way what she was doing and how I can do it at home.
My curls look fantastic! Since living here in Colorado, my hair has definitely missed the body and springs it used to get from humidity. With this cut & way of styling, my curls are back! Soft, shiny, and spirally again!
I ended up buying all the products she used on me, and she also gave me a helpful informational how-to sheet, with detailed step-by-step instructions that the salon typed up.
Megan also told me to call her if I wasn't getting the same results at home. After she left, the receptionist told me that Megan was very serious about that and to not hesitate to call her if I needed help!
I also got my brows waxed and tinted. The usual aesthetician is out on maternity, so Richelle (the owner) did them. She did a great job--no complaints! I always worry that I'll end up looking like Joan Crawford when I get my brows done, but she did them just the way I asked for.
All in all, a great experience--and I'd NEVER been in a salon where there were so many Curly Girls! For fellow CGs in the area, I definitely recommend SHAPES, and ask for MEGAN!!!!!
Oh--one thing I didn't like. Pretty soon, they'll no longer accept tips on credit cards, which is something my last salon did and I absolutely hated it. I never carry cash, and would always forget to pull some out before my apoointment, so I'd have to run next door to the gas station just to get money. Hopefully they'll change their mind about that!

I enjoyed having my hair cut and styled by Jamie this morning! I really like the end result and all the pointers about taking care of my curly hair. I also enjoyed having my makeup done by Mary. I am ready for our special dinner out tonight. Thanks so much!

My first cut at Shape w/ Jeanna. Finally I have a salon that can cut my curly hair !!!! If you have curls you know the frustration!!!!! I have literally had dozens of people try to cut my hair with only 2 or 3 that can get the results I want. Jeanna did a great job first time using the Deva method of styling- looking at my curls before cutting. So I highly reccommed Shapes .

I waited to write this review because I wanted to make sure the first time was not a fluke - very picky about my hair!! (As I am sure we all are). The first time I was in, I didn't know of a stylist but had heard good things about the salon, and I was given an appointment with Jeanna. Jeanna is amazing at listening! AND she understood what I wanted EXACTLY! Jeanna made suggestions and showed me how to do things easier to do it myself! I have now been a few times, and now I'm at the point where I tell her to just work her magic. She is truly an artist with hair, listens intently to make sure she gives you what you want, and actually follows through. She showed me the products that would be useful, but in no way was pushy to purchase them. I have had cut, color and hightlights, and every time, know matter the whim I have that day, she listens and follows through, but is careful to tell me nicely when she doesn't think something might work. (what I can't look like angelina Jolie???) She is so relaxing and comfortable to be around. I have also had wax work done with Dayna, and she is an abolute doll. NOT painful at all, and completely relaxes you - I mean comfortable for a wax!!??? See Jeanna and/or Dayna, and you will not regret it!!

I went to Shapes Salon for the first time a few months ago. I had just moved here and was looking for a new place. As many of you know it is very hard to find a new stylist that does a great job and makes you feel comfortable. I sat in her chair not knowing what I wanted and Megan made suggestions that she thought would be appropriate. I trusted her judgment and let her do her thing. I was a little nervous, but as soon as I looked in the mirror after rinsing the color, I knew I was going to be happy. I feel like Megan took her time with me as a new client and made me feel at ease. From the way she was talking I could tell that she really knew what she was talking about. I would highly recommend Megan to anyone who is looking for someone new, or even if your not. I have since been back and still had an amazing experience. Thank you Megan for making me feel amazing.

I thought it was just me, but after reading the other reviews...I realized the owner must just be rude to everyone. It was my first time at the salon, yet no one welcomed me, in fact, the owner/stylist seemed annoyed that I was there.
The cut was extremely overpriced. It cost more because I went to Richelle, however, she was assigning most of the tasks to othe stylists/assistants. When I tried to make conversation, Richelle refused to engage. She was also very rude to her employees, often snipping at them during my appointment. The cut was OK, but I was so uncomfortable that I would not return.

Having moved from Seattle to Denver recently, I was dreading finding a new place to get my hair worked on.
I came on Citysearch and saw that Shapes Salon had good reviews. I checked out the Shapes Salon website and saw that the gals that worked there were cute and funky and it looked like the kind of place that would do a good job.
During my appointment with the owner, Richelle, I wasn't greeted nor talked to at all. She was grumpy and unfriendly and untalkative. What I found funny was that she talked with the other hairstylist's clients, but wouldn't talk to me and I was in her chair. I tried a few times to break the ice and start up some small talk with her but she was uninterested and acted like it was annoying her that I was there to have her work on my hair. It was definitely the most awkward experience for those 2 hours I was her client.
Now it has been a few months since I had the work done that day at Shapes and my hair is green! No doubt an ash color was used.... I am completely aware that hair color fades, but I've never had my hair fade to green before.
I do not recommend this salon and I will never go back again.
It was an expensive experience with poor customer service. Obviously, the other stylists might do a great job and might be alot more friendly, but the prices will still be high and the owner will still be a drag.

Julia Dreiling is one of the best stylists in the Metro area. I feel like she has this magical touch when it comes to hair. She cut and colored my hair - the finishing product looked great!! She also taught me how to style my hair with the Deva Curl products and I can recreate it at home. Generally, i can never make my hair look like it does after the salon. Julia D. is a great teacher and has tons of experience working with curly hair. I thought she was very insightful and comfortable to be around. And my hair looks fabulous!!!

I was so excited, just to be let down. I loved the Curly Girl book, it changed my curls life! I did some research and was extremely excited to learn Shapes Salon offered the product line & Deva Cut!! I read reviews and Julia McBride had received the best but she was booked for 2 months. So I asked for the next Deva expert, Richelle had an opening in three weeks, since she was the owner I took it. It was the worst experience. Richelle was not friendly, which is fine if you can cut my curls. I asked to keep my length and for a cool shade of brown for the color, I specified no red. (I had had enough of the red tint fm home hair color)Richelle was working on myself and another client at the same time. The girl helping her, worked on me about 70% of the time and she was not even Deva trained! When I was done what I had was a short flat head of RED tinted curls and a bill for $175!! I was so sick to my stomach because I looked horrible and paid $175 for it. I never really complain about bad cuts, I have grown used to them and just deal until they grow out but I also never pay that much for a cut and color. I would advise you do not book with Richelle for a Deva cut. Deva cuts cost more and she hands you over to someone not even trained. Worse then being unfriendly she does not listen to what you want.I called the next day to fix the color and she was out of town but had someone else fix it at no cost. I will say that as I sat there Julie had a few curly clients, one at a time, and they walked out looking great and happy. If you are going to this Salon I would wait to get in with Julie and AVOID Richelle!!

I am back in Denver after living in Seattle for 10ish years. Although salon pricing is less expensive in the Denver area, it seems the overall salon experience is not what I have come to expect.
The stylist at Shapes did a nice highlight without the striped look I can't stand, and the esthetician did a great job on my brows. But, for some reason, the stylist was rushed when taking out the foils, and it hurt. No seriously, it hurt. Also, there was no neck rest on the shampoo bowl, and I was not offered a towel roll.
I also found it strange that such a highly rated salon wouldn't pay more attention to cleanliness. As the first appointment of the day I would expect the floors and corners to be free of hair.
To top it all off, I used 2-hour street parking and got a parking ticket after less than 1.5 hours. The cost of the ticket is nominal, but it would be great if the salon advised their clients of better parking options.
Does anyone know of a Denver or Boulder salon that truly takes client comfort. and cleanliness seriously?
