My girlfriend and I tried to make a reservation at this dump (based on reading reviews) the other day. Thank heaven the guy that answered the phone was a d**k. This prevented us from ruining our evening! I don't understand how you can operate a business with zero common sense. Save your $$$$ and pick up some 2 day old sushi at Kings....i'm sure it will be better than the crap they serve. Hopefully a Del Taco comes in and takes over the property.

This had to be the worst experience ever. The waitresses would not clean up the table once the guest would leave. There were dirty napkins on our table which we had to place on the table next to us. We had order 2 plates of regular rolls. After a 2 hour wait, she shows up with 1 plate of regular rolls and 1 plate of hand rolls. We were told the long wait was because of a large party that was there and that the chef had to make almost a 1000 rolls for them. This was just not a good enough reason. The asian waitress didn't seem to care that she had screwed up our order and it was another 20 minute wait to get our new rolls. This place is just downright horrible. Don't go there unless you just want to get in a bad mood.

Not one of, but the worst dining experience I have ever had. Not only was the food subpar, but the service would make anyone run. After I gave my AmEx the waitress claimed that my card wouldn't work (which is odd, because I checked on my phone and BofA said it was working fine). Then we preceded to go through 4 more credit cards, all ""claimed"" to be denied. But I never saw a denied receipt. Then when I asked for my card back, they refused until I went to the sleezy liquor store to use the ATM. After I went to the ATM with the credit card that was claimed to not work, but some how I got cash from the ATM, I came back with money. I asked several times to see the manager - who refused to talk with us. Then I went up to him to explain the situation. He rudely said several homophobic comments, of which I cant ever say on google they were so offense and derogatory. And then finally threatened to call the police. THIS IS NOT A GAY FRIENDLY ESTABLISHMENT. Instead it is a sleezy, disgusting, ""restaurant"" that every person in Denver should avoid. Especially when there are so many other good restaurants on the same street. And not to mention that the manager was swearing at us saying ""I dont give a f***. Ill sleep fine tonight f*ggots. I am sure you want to f*** me. Ill call the f***ing cops on you."" BUYER BEWARE!!!!

I read the reviews and had to say that I've been coming here with my friends for about a million years, and we always have a great time. The food is great. I'm really not sure why people are complaining so much. I think they just expect it to be a five-star dining experience... but that's really not the point of the place. It's a trendy, but fairly cheap little lounge. It's a great place to relax, chat, and get a little tipsy before going dancing. It's really not unusual if your food to take 30 minutes to arrive, but so what? It's not a dinner place, it's a hang-out. If what you want is to arrive, eat your food, and leave (all under an hour,) go to Applebee's or something. If you go here, just chill out and chat with your friends, instead of checking your watch and criticizing the staff.

I don't know how this restaurant stays in business. I neglected to check the reviews for this place until it was too late to change restaurants before a show and what a mistake that was! I have never waited so long for a meal to be served in my life and since there are only 4 items on the menu (with the exception of the sushi), none of which require even a small degree of expertise to prepare, I totally fail to understand why it took 45 minutes to serve our meals - even the sushi! There were only 2 other tables that ordered entrees, so that could not possibly be the excuse. The service was inattentive, the fish was dry and without character and even the bar tender was unable to get the simple martini order correct. Stay away!

My girlfriends and I went in for dinner after looking up the menu online. Come to find out, their actual menu was not the same as the online menu, had far less choices. We were planning on using a $25 coupon, in fact it was the only reason we went. We were told we could not use it . When I asked to speak to a manager the waiter told me that he was not around, when I pressed him, he said ""Let me see if I could find him"". Eventually someone who looked like a cook came out who could barely speak English. When i told him the issue he literally WALKED AWAY and never came back! We waited 30 minutes and got so fed up, we paid the bill and walked out. Will never go there again.

Just went to Opal for the 2nd time on July 29th 09. Ordered 2 drinks that took 20 mins to arrive. Ordered some sushi and oysters. 1 order of Sushi came out before our drinks...after waiting 50 mins, we cancelled our order and left...with a 47 cent tip!
Who owns this place? Do they read these reviews? If you go, go at 4 when nobody is there and I imagine you'll get your food in a reasonable amount of time. I can't believe this place is still in business. Oh, and the bathrooms....disgusting. Do they ever clean them? The city needs to insect this place.

The wait staff took over an hour to get 3 hand rolls of sushi, messed up our bill, took 45 minutes to give us our bill and did not apologize or offer to comp one thing for us. They were horribly understaffed and the waitress brough us the wrong food, forgot our drinks then messed up our bill. Then there's the mayonaise heavy hand rols which were so unappealing we didn't even want to take our left overs home. Avoid this place like the plague, because odds are you will get the plague from the gnarly bathroom

TERRIBEL SERVICE...FOOD WAS OK....FOUL MOUTHED EMPLOYEES!!!! This was my first time to the joke of a place and everyone that ate there was upset and the servers were cussing and using foul laguage in the back but was loud enough for everyone to hear! NEVER AGAIN!

5280 week is when you try to strut your stuff and impress. Not these guys. For them it was a numbers game. Pack as many people in as possible and lie to everyone about what you are offering on your menu. We went for the lobster...ended up with something the size of a crayfish. They sat us in the lobby...no candle, no silverware, just an empty table right by the front door..and we had reservations!! Main course was cold, service was really slow, so slow we had to ask for our desert to go.
boooo!!!! never again.

We went to Opal last night to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. I was sitting in the bar with a couple of friends and had just ordered sushi. The waiter, up until this point, has been super nice and fun. A friend of mine joined us and asked the waiter for a menu and the waiter gave him such a hard time that it was beyond ridiculous! All my friend did was ask for a menu and the waiter accused him of being an $#&%$@ because he (the waiter) is gay, hands flailing in the air, going off about how my friend does not appreciate his service and how rude it is. I was blown away by this as again, my friend did not do anything to provoke this.
The next few trips this waiter made to the table, he would still be super sweet to me, and my other friend that was sitting with me before the ""offensive"" friend joined us. When the waiter turned to my ""offensive"" friend, the attitude instantly changed and he was a $#&%$@ again. This was completely un-called for!
We hung out most of the night since my crew was DJing for the evening. I was hanging out by the DJ booth later in the night and that same waiter came up to me and started apologizing for how he acted but also tried to put blame on my friend. I then told the waiter ""but he didn't do anything to you"" and then he went off about how people need to understand his stressful job and they need to be nice to him and blah blah blah... I again said ""but he didn't do anything to you"" and he started to go off about himself again. I stopped him and said I really don't want to have this conversation and he threw a hissy fit and walked off.
I can't believe an establishment would hire a server like that! I'm still somewhat blown away by what happened as it was too weird and ridiculous to be real. We enjoyed our sushi and otherwise had a good time, but the service was effing ridiculous!

My wife and I went there last night for 5280 week. We got there a little early for our reservation to take advantage of the happy hour. The tiny sushi was good, but did I mention it was tiny? Same thing with our martinis. They might as well call the martinys. Tiny little martinis. I had 4 within 30 minutes and still couldn't cop a buzz. Looking down at the table with the tiny sushi and tiny martinis, I felt like a giant eating Tiny Town food. But enough about the food. The restoom literally made my wife sick. The stench from the women's restroom was unbearable. Having worked in many restaurants, I know what happens when the owner/manager ""gives up"" on the restrooms. They just don't care. And if they don't care about the cleanliness of the restrooms, what else don't they care about? The quality/freshness of the food? Even if I had my nose bitten off by an insane chimpanzee and couldn't smell, the restroom still appeared as if it hadn't been cleaned in months. Stains on the walls, floors and ceiling. Rust marks everywhere. Reminded me of a fraternity bathroom after a three day, 20 keg party. Do yourself a favor - seek sushi elsewhere.

So if you haven't been to Opal in a few months don't go back. We used to love this place. Good Asian food, good sushi. Apparentely they changed chefs or owners. The menu is aweful. they took off the Asian dishes and replaced them with cheeseburger and prime riba sandwiches. How weird! Sushi was not great either. I would not recommend it!

Things started out promising-I had heard about the great Happy Hour deals. That was as good as it got. Upon arriving to the table to take our drink order our waitress informed us that she had been drinking the peach sake all night and that it was delicious. We ordered sake and a beer. 10 minutes later she came back and mentioned something mumbly about opening a new box of sake, still no beer. 10 minutes after that she came to the table as another waitress was coming by. She informed her that she couldnt find her card and that she would have to take all her tables. The new waitress was clearly irritated, rolling her eyes and complaining to us. We placed our food order with her. She came back a few minutes later, as she had forgotten what we ordered and we also informed her that the first waitress must have forgotten the drinks. After waiting 30 minutes for drinks the waitress came back (still with no drinks) and said she would see if she could try and have the sake comped. My boyfriend said to her ""I just want to make sure you were aware that the other waitress took our drink order more than 30 minutes ago"" as it was clear there had been no hand off communication between the two. She snapped back ""well its not my fault"" and thats just the way it is. She continued to rant on and then stomped off. We left immediately. My boyfriend and I have have nearly 15 years of experience working in restaurants and consider our expectations reasonable. This was the worst experience ever.

I have eaten at nearly every Denver restaurant advertised in Westword. OPal is by far the worst - and this is after giving it three tries since it is so close to my house. The wait-staff is inconsistent and the bartenders are rude. The food took forever to come out on all visits. There was nothing pleasant about Opal - except that I left.
Speak with your dollar, there are much better places to go, especially for happy hour. Do not stand for horrible service or Opal will become the norm!

Some people will be ok with a dinner that takes 2+ hours, so this is not the largest negative opal has to offer. The worst was the server that seemed to hide from us for 30 min. at a time. Luckly we knew the service was going to be bad from the reviews written here, so we were not caught off guard.
On the positive side, the food was good, fresh tasteing, and served at the proper temp. The waitstaff also apologized for the slow service, and said it was ""just a busy night, and they rarely have these issues""
The truth is they always have these issues, and they don't comp you a menu item because they can't afford to do that for every table every night.
If you do go to Opal stick to Happy Hour!!!

This had to be the worst dinning experience I have had. We had made a reservation for 10 people over three weeks prior. When we showed up they did not have the reservation. Some of the worst servers. We had to ask numerous times to get drinks or refills. It took 2 hours to get our food and then it was served cold. We complained to the owner and his answer was I'm understaffed. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

I planned a birthday dinner with ten people for my husbands birthdy. I called and made reservations a week in advance and even had someone call me back to confirm. When I got my phone call I was told they had complimentary valet parking. I pulled up and got out to ask the host where the valet was. I stood there for almost 10 minutes before someone acknowledge me. All he told me was that he didn't know and that people have been asking that all night. Then he walked away. Our entire party arrived before our reservation and it was clear that no seating was available. We waited for almost 2 hours past our reservation time to be seated. We got the run around from every host/waiter in the place. The practically, in so many words, said ""too bad, we over booked."" When I told them we were fed up and leaving they didn't even care. So, we went somewhere else that had the best sushi I've ever had and we gave them our 300 dollars. I will never return to Opal and I will encourage everyone I know to steer clear!
