Like a bad boyfriend, I kept returning over and over hoping that you would get better - that your food, service, or margaritas would bring back that glitter in my eye - make me love you again. Well, it's over, Mezcal. I've been with you for ten years, and I'm done spending a LOT of money on you and waiting for a better experience. The margaritas and your proximity to home were enough to keep me coming back for a while, and then you even changed your mix on me. Time to shut the doors and call it a night. Oh, and take your bartenders and service staff with you.

The trashybartender badly in need of a shower flirted with my husband telling him she was newly single and called me a name I will not repeat because I asked her the ingredients of a dish. We were so embarrassed we could not respond! Unbelievable!!! I left her 20 percent tip in pitty. She could not stop telling us how hung over she was and kept giving us the wrong drinks as well. Very unpleasant experience. Too bad because I really like the place but doubt I will return.

It's a shame a place with such a great start is now a crappy bar with crappy food. When Mezcal first opened it actually had a staff that wanted to be there and enjoyed working there - but over the years that has definately changed. The bartenders are boring, uninteresting and have NO personality. Servers are working on their own time - not yours. So if you want good service - go someplace else. I think Mezcal is dying a slow, painful death! Oh - and it isn't a Denver landmark - sorry but you've got to be in business for at least 10 years before you earn that title, not to mention a place that people actually like to go to!

Oh my gosh... where do I begin? My whole experience with the folks at "" m inc"" has been awful to say the least. I recently threw a party for my husband at Rockbar and had Mezcal ""cater"" some appetizers for my guests. Based on my experiences in the past I was expecting a quality result. BOY WAS I WRONG! When I arrived and saw what was passed off as food I was dumbfounded. I had two cold trays of soggy ""quesadillas"" and one bowl of chips and guac to feed 30 people (And if I tell you how much they charged me per person you would be dumbfounded too!) Though I should have seen the writing on the wall as the ""planning"" process left a lot to be desired. From the beginning I could not lock down specifics from the girl that apparently m inc has employed as their key contact for events/catering. Not only did I not receive what we had agreed on in writing but there was a complete lack of follow-up on her part.
To say the least I DO NOT recommend using the folks at m inc for ANY of your event planning/catering needs!! Not only was my food cold & soggy I was rushed out of the area that I ""reserved"" at Rockbar... this was after purchasing 2 bottles of Mad Dog for what was to be their ""bottle service"" the only service I got out of the folks over there was a swift kick in the backside as they shooed my out the door because they told me they were expecting 300-400 people for the evening! Being good natured and noticing that my friends were having a good time on the dancefloor I allowed to them the space.. I can tell you I left at 1:00 a.m. and the space that I previously occupied was never used. Seesh!

Went to Mezcal last night. Service was very, very average. Nice waitress, but average. My husband and I ordered a vegetarian combo to share and it came out with chicken in it. The toastata was stale and the food was by FAR the WORST Mexican food I've ever had. On top of it, Mezcal is insanely overpriced. A complete waste of money and we came home to eat after we left.
I highly recommend going anywhere but here. This place should just serve their over priced drinks and give up on the food.

Just wasted $50 of my hard earned money to eat this overpriced garbage. I am so mad that they are getting away with this. We should have read the reviews first, but passed it and it looked cool, so we decided to check it out. DON""t WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!!! PLEASE DON""T EAT HERE! If you are the owner, burn your restaurant down. If you are the cook, please seriously consider another career. Perhaps dog food developer?!

This place has gone way downhill over the last year. Ordered a mojito and caipirhinia - both were awful, tasted like a half a glass of simple syrup. Tambien had the same issues with their drinks...
I had tacos pastor with what amounted to be Ragu marinara on them. Ate one bite and couldn't continue. My date had a flavorless, cold tostada. We'll never go back.
Stopped on the way home for canned soup which was delicious

THE HEAD CHEF, OR SHOULD I JUST SAY SLOP COOK HAS THE WORST ATTITUDE I HAVE EVER WITNESSED. HE CLEARLY HATES HIS LIFE AND HIS JOB THERE, AN IT SHOWS IN THE POOR QUALITY OF THE FROZEN AND BULK PRODUCTS THEY USE TO COOK WITH. AND AS FOR THE REST OF THE STAFF...HA! JUST GO TO TACO BELL. YOU WILL THANK ME.

I had a bunch of friends meet me at Mezcal for my birthday. HUGE mistake!! We had the rudest server I have ever encountered in my life. She scoffed at our drink requests. Along with rolling her eyes at us several times throughout the meal. The margaritas were ok. The food seemed similar to a frozen Mexican dinner. Please save yourself the bad experience and go to King Soopers and buy a frozen dinner. Chances are you'll be treated better by the cashiers in the store than any employee at Mezcal.

A buddy of mine just took us out to this place and it was perfect for a relaxing Sunday evening. The drink list (the tequila selection) was impressive. I however had to get a strawberry mojito (being a big mojito fan and never having a strawberry one before) it was delicious! The chips, salsa & queso cheese dip (served with warm corn tortillas) were fabulous! I almost got full on chips & tortillas! The entrees were good, not spectacular, but good. The chili relleno had a very thick layer of batter on it, a little too much and the enchilada had this tomato sauce on it and it reminded me of an Italian canoli. Regardless, it was good. I definitely enjoyed my meal. The atmosphere was chill. The three off us were able to enjoy our conversation without being overpowered by loud music or the conversations of others. It ended up being a very enjoyable experience and I would recommend it.
****EDIT**** 2/13/08: OK, so I went back again last weekend and it was GREAT! We snacked on the fabulous salsas & queso dip while drinking beer and mango mojitos.... everything was awesome! Then, low & behold there were $1 tacos after 10pm! The chicken was a little dry, but they were tasty! The previous reviews are off, you gotta check this place out!
****EDIT**** 7/29/08: My friends and I continue to frequent this establishment and besides occasionally being out of the flavored mojitos (so disappointing!) We are always satisfied. I just wanted to add an additional piece to my review since it appears somebody seems to have a personal vengeance against this place. I want everyone to know there is nothing wrong and Mezcal is GREAT! I just don't feel a need to make multiple profiles to say it ;)

This was my forth and last time at Mezcal. I read the previous bad reviews but had to see for myself. I was used to a lively atmostphere with unique regional Mexcian fare. The word must be out, the normaly packed house was empty on a Friday night. Started off with a surly waitress who scoffed at my wifes request for a light Mexican beer. We too were served the frozen guacamole. Not sure what was more cool, the waitress or my tamale. Overall a terrible experience. Do not waste you time or $.

I met some friends for happy hour drinks. We ordered a few of the appetizers, one of which was chips and guacamole. What we got was a small plate of Tostitos and a bowl of frozen, clumpy avocado. Guacamole is a basic dish any Mexican place should have a handle on, but Mezcal does not have a clue. What is wrong with the kitchen staff that makes it ok to 1) send out food that is frozen, 2) use pre-packaged frozen ""guacamole"" and 3) think guacamole is nothing more than an avocado cut into a few big pieces and dropped in a bowl. At the table, we joked that it was a surprise they managed to figure out that the pit should be removed. Hoping it was just an oversight, we mentioned the situation to our server. She just laughed, shrugged and affirmed that the plain, frozen avocado chunks we got were really what Mezcal wanted us to have when we ordered guacamole. Her attitude let us know that she knew it was gross, but that the kitchen was just dumb. She laughed along with us in disgust and didn't even try to sell it. The other items we ordered were edible, but totally generic- like the big box of taquitos from the freezer section at the grocery store. Mezcal should spend less time trying to look edgy for the yuppies and research some quality TV dinners they can substitute for their cr@p food.

My daughter and son-in-law and I had the worst food and service at Mezcal. When we arrived for lunch at around 12:30pm the place was empty; this should have told us something. I ordered the Fish Tacos which were priced at about $12. These 3 tiny, tiny tacos came with less than a mouthful of fish scattered between the three tacos; it was a joke! When I pointed this out to the waiter his response was ""What do you want me to do about it?"" The rest of the food was very, very marginal in taste and presentation, and the prices were not cheap. There was a complete lack of interest fom the bartender, waiter and the chef. Taco Bell would have been a better choice. We will never go there again and I imagine they will go out of bussiness soon.

I have never encountered a more grouchy, cantakerous group of people in my life! The staff was so rude! They acted annoyed to be serving my friends and I. Both bartenders I encountered were terrible. He ignored me until I practically yelled at him to get anything! And she was a royal witch. Having worked in the service industry there is absolutely no excuse for this kind of treatment!! And to top it all off when the staff felt it was time to leave (well before closing time) they turned up the house music so loud that we couldn't carry on conversation and were forced to leave.
Nice decorations though.

The food is icky. Oily, chili rellenos with a SWEET sauce? Smallish pieces of fish in the fish tacos with mounds of lettuce, so it looks like more? Some weird little doughy appetizer? On the flip side, if you drink enough these details won't matter because the service, atmosphere and drinks are awesome!

I had heard good and bad about this East Colfax Mexican eatery. My initial reaction was 'why does Denver need another Mexican Resturant?' I have lived and traveled in Mexico for over 25 years and have eaten in all of the major districts of the country and I also enjoy and often eat the more typical 'Tex-Mex' or Southwestern US style of Mexican food. I took a friend who has also lived in Mexico and really knows Mexican food and drink. We ordered a Tamal and a Relleno as appitizers to 'test' the kitchen. It passed with high marks, high enough that my friend, who is a real Relleno snob order more Tamals and Rellenos for his main course. He says the Rellenos are the best in Denver and I know he's eaten a lot of them because it's about all he ever orders. I had fish tacos. While many people think these are a coastal food for Mexico, you get them everywhere and these were excellent; breaded Talapia with raw onions and an avacado based salsa.
I know why some people have complained about this place; it is very typical Northern Mexico. It is what you would get in a better family resturant in Northern Mexico and is therefore strange to folks use to the more typical US style of Mexcian food. Don't be put off, this is the real deal.

This place is great - dinner for four for $40! And good ingredients, nothing skimped on. The food is not spicy enough, but there are several hot sauces on the table to choose from. I had the salmon enchiladas and they were excellent - topped with a vinegary cabbage mixture, on homemade tortillas. Our service wasn't great, but at these prices, the wait staff isn't making much probably. We had empty cocktalks too often for my liking, but the quality and value of the food will keep me coming back.
Despite what other reviewers said, I was there from 8-10 on a Saturday night and had no problem getting a table. None at all.
Keep your expectations in check and you'll enjoy Mezcal. Not the right place for a quiet dinner or a special occasion, but great for a cheap evening out.

Despite other reviews, this place is great for brunch. Seven of us ALL disagreed with the negative comments about Mezcal. All five of our different brunch entrés were wonderful. And, no, we didn't drink a single alcoholic beverage. I had the Entomatada. (Cheese, eggs, corn tortillas, bacon, and chili.)
