Established in 1995, the Plane State Jail has a capacity to accommodate more than 2,200 female offenders. It oversees a staff of over 420 employees. The jail offers substance abuse screening and assessment services. The Plane State Jail s medical capabilities feature electronic specialty clinics, wheelchair-accessible beds, and ambulatory medical, dental and mental health services. It administers various educational programs, including literacy, reading and cognitive intervention. The jail also provides career and technology programs related to business computer information systems, landscape design and construction carpentry. It is operated by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ), which manages offenders in private correctional facilities, and state prisons and jails.
