The Cafe

My daughter and I came to Dallas to get her taxes done at the IRS. After being at the IRS for hours, we decided to stop at the Urban Market for a bite to was next to our parking garage. I found the cashier friendly and helpful (I am disabled and somewhat slow). The food was more expensive that I am used to paying for a quick bite...BUT the portions were large and the taste was exceptional!!!! I will probably go there again for a treat for myself. I enjoyed the eclectic decor too!

Great location, HORRIBLE management!

I moved in to InterUrban a year and a half ago, and loved it at first. Soon after I realized how horrible the management is. In my year and a half, I've been through 3 leasing managers, and at least 7 leasing agents. The newest ones are the worst! I have never been late on paying rent, and just the other day I received a notice of eviction for not paying. I checked my bank account, and I definitely paid! I called down to the leasing office to find out what happened. I told them I had my bank account up and I could show them the payment if I needed to and the agent replied ""Oh my gosh! I am so sorry! There were a few payments unaccounted for, and we didn't know whose they were."" So, instead of looking at tennants payment histories, and contacting them to find out if they could prove they had paid rent for the month of September, they put eviction notices out instead.
Also, recently my neighbor went down to the office for something, and noticed a ring of keys still in the lock (it was the set of keys to every apartment in the building!). He waited at the door for the manager, because he didn't want to leave them sitting in the door for everyone to have access to, and when she came back down from showing an apartment, he gave them to her. He told her it was unacceptable that she forgot them there, because she was potentially giving someone everyone's personal information. Her response' ""I'm sorry, I'm new here. It's only my second day.""
I have a friend who was hassled by the new leasing agent or manager because I asked him to take care of my dog today while I am working. She finally let him in, after giving him a nasty attitude.
As for maintenance, the maintenance guy is very nice and helpful, but he always forgets to fix things and you have to ask him repeatedly. I still have a big rectangular hole in my kitchen area from where he changed an air filter over 6 months ago.
Now onto safety. I live on the second floor and the building is supposed to be secure. There are magnet doors that only let you in if you have a FOB. The second door magnet is constantly broken (and when I say broken, I mean actually broken off the door frame and laying on the ground!), and just the other day the magnet door was broken and the surveillance camera was turned away so it was not facing the door. Apparently, someone stole the big screen TV from downstairs. Obviously the building is not secure enough to stop intruders from coming in if they really want to, and that really worries me.
Cleanliness' Eh, not really. The elevators constantly have broken beer bottles or spilled beer in them and I've seen food left in the hallways for days. One of the second floor tennants lets their dog pee inside the apartment by the front door, and the urine seeps under the door leaving a big puddle outside the apartment. I've personally seen them go inside the apartment without cleaning it up--they leave it for the cleaining lady! How disgusting!
I absolutely love the location and I love my apartment, but when my lease is up I will definitely be taking my business elsewhere. Live in InterUrban if you want the most disorganized management in downtown Dallas!

Terrible Horrible Really Bad

so, I working and decide to get a bite to eat for lunch. I tell a co-worker that I'm headed over to Urban Market to which he says ""Good luck with that."" I thought , That was odd; but carried on. I browsed the menu and opted for a Quesadilla paid for my order and sat. Three customers were behind me when I placed my order. Three customers received their orders before I received mine. Of course, the salad I expected to be served before mine but two other sandwiches with fries and garnish. No, I think not. I was not happy but I let it pass. My little blinker which notifies you when your order is ready did not blink. The counter person asked, ""Did you want that to go?"" Again, I responded yes, this being the second time. They take a few more minutes to prepare it to go. I am handed the quesadilla with no fries only a small container of sour cream and a small container of pico de gallo. I ask if I may have a container of BBQ sauce because the quesadilla looked dry. I counter person stated, ""that will be an extra .55 cents. I scoffed but paid the cost while telling the counter person that now I understood why my co-worker made the earlier statement. All this to say, I will not use the cafe again. The store has a few items I can use but I'm done with the market. Too bad because I work in the building across the street and hoped Urban Market was a place I could go after work. Nor will I entertain guests there. My suggestion to all is stay away from Urban Market Cafe. Unless you just like giving away money.

It's not a bad place. The lofts are true lofts so you have to be able to deal with complete openness. The stainless steel appliances are really nice. It's also convenient to have a grocery store, cafe, and a bar right in the building. The pool is nice, but its not the best to catch some sun. The fitness center is pretty poor. The staff is VERY nice, but the ammenities are not the best that you can find downtown.

Great grocery store, great service, one of the best in Dallas

Urbanmarket, is a great grocery store, period. It embodies everything that an on-the-go-shopper like myself needs: Great food, convenience, location & quality service. The market is located centrally for most Downtown residents. They have great pricing that is competitive with other stores & the quality of food is exceptional. The prepared foods departed is amazing. I havent seen less than 25 great dishes to choose from, and for the cooking-impaired like myself, its a dream come true. VISIT URBANMARKET TODAY! YOU WON'T BE SORRY!

Avoid Urbanmarket and UrbanCafe!!!

I don't want to bore everyone with my ""stories"", so I'll give you the short cut:

* Went 2 times and had a aweful experience both times
*Store has confusing layout. Bottles and drinks are stored up stairs, so one must hand-carry all drinks, down to their cart.
*Employees hide to be unavailable
*Employees recommended products without knowledge about it
*Urban Cafe - Horrible!!!! Ordered a Veggie Burger and 20 minutes later with only 1 other person ahead of me, I received a MEAT burger. Chefs meander in the kitchen like they need glasses.
* Ordered Bloody mary, gave $2 tip in order ""To Insure Prompt Service"" and had to remind employees 15 minutes later after we received our food.
*Oh yeah...while I'm at it...It's ALWAYS a pain getting out of the parking garage with their validation.

I will never go to the Urbanmarket or Cafe ever again. THIS STORE SHOULD CLOSE DOWN. IT SHOULD NOT RECEIVE ANY SUBSUDIES!!!!!!

For a better alternative for lunch and take-home dinner, try Two Sisters To Go Store on Gaston, 11am - 4pm M-F.

Best market in Dallas, period.

I can't say enough about Urbanmarket. Great food, great prices, knowledgeable and helpful customer service in a conveniently located package. What more could you ask for? 5 stars!

Truly exceptional grocery store!

This is a store that I love to visit. I always spend plenty of time looking at everything. Don't want to miss anything. It's like the best of the best of a specialty grocery store and a neighborhood supermarket rolled into one convenient and centrally located package. And did I mention that they have a knowledgeable staff? Best place to shop in Downtown and one of the best in Dallas. Thanks Urbanmarket!""

It's fine for a few things, if you must shop downtown

Review written 01/18/08:

This business pioneered a culture-clashed neighborhood of indigents, office workers, and downtown's fledgling habitant hipsters circa 2005.

I have lived across the street from this cafe-and-grocery concept from 11/05-01/08. While the cafe offers generally acceptable-quality fare including sandwiches, burgers and salads, this is also a large convenience-store-style grocery (read limited-selection and overpriced).

The store is fine for some non-perishable or long-shelf-life items (e.g. BEER), but don't be surprised if the produce sits spoiled, or if the cheeses have expired quietly long ago on their shelves. Don't bother to interest yourself in the discolored-raw-meat counters or moldy tortillas. S-C-A-R-Y. The bread may be dried in its package to a crisp crunch, but that can be convenient if you're making croutons anyway!

The UrbanMarket staff is generally disinterested in your concerns; numerous requests for contact with management, via email, web, phone, and in-person, have been left unresponded and all issues left unresolved. Comment cards abound, but no one listens and no one responds. Take it for what it is. Or don't.

If you live in downtown Dallas, you'll probably just end up driving somewhere else to shop groceries. If you're stuck downtown and looking for something canned or bottled or dried or non-perishable, then you may enjoy the UrbanMarket.

They Cater!

Who knew? This Grocer does everything! Did you know they cater? I also wanted to get a case of one item and they special ordered it for me for my party. It's like having you local small neighborhood 'Vinney' the grocer! He will get anything for you on your list from gourmet olives, to fine wine to a full tray of selected deli meats and cheeses and then ask you if there is anything else! Seriously, you have got to try them out, they are not overpriced and are very convenient off Jackson street in the middle of Downtown. They bring the service aspect back into what a grocer use to do back in my Grandmas days?.. Way to go Urban Market! It?s no surprise why they were voted the Best grocery store in Dallas last year and this year!

A full service store!

Wow what an amazing store! I actually was able to get Hyacinths at this time of year in the grocery store! This store! I also picked up some Christmas lights, fresh fruit, coffee, deli products from the butcher counter, wine coolers, and a roasted chicken! Come on in! What a great store! They even have a full bar and cafe attached so you can do it all in one spot, walking from any downtown apartment or hotel location. LOVE THIS STORE!

Hot and sophisticated living!

This place is AMAZING! Hip and cool, sophisticated and convenient. This place has it all. The Market, dry cleaning services, a bank, cafe, bar and a great patio to sit and read the Sunday paper at while having brunch. Come on! They have upscale everything! granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, this is a MUST see. Call ahead, very few open at a time, so go now while you are thinking about it and see what urban living is all about.

Easily the best grocery store!

Fresh around the corner indeed! From the normal everyday items, to tantalizing specialty treats, The Market has it all! I can find anything I need at this place, and the prices are competitive with other grocery stores. The weekly specials are a lifesaver! There's always something on sale that I truly need. Also, if I need assistance, one of the helpful staff always points me in the right direction. Urbanmarket is truly the best thing in Downtown Dallas, and one of the best grocery stores in the city. Thanks for being my neighborhood grocer!

Great salad bar, chili, deli, lunch spot, cafe (quesadilla's galore), good club sandwich. A spacious, multi-dimensional farmer's market type feel. Great decor. A cross between a mom & pop grocery store and Whole Foods. Free parking with validation. 15-minute parking off the street. Between Jackson & Wood Streets, near City Hall & the library.
