Outstanding Veterinary Care

The staff at Carolina Animal Hospital is competent and compassionate, and provides excellent care for my three cats. Everyone there is professional, and also very kind and understanding, and treats the animals as if they were their own. Dr. McHugh always takes plenty of time to explain health problems, treatment options, and home care instructions completely. I am confident that my cats are receiving the best care available, and highly recommend this practice.

Dental Care
The main working area of our hospital contains multiple zones, including Patient Treatment Stations, Hospitalization and Recovery accommodations, a specialized Dental Treatment Table, and an ICU with a dedicated Oxygen Support Cage.
Vaccination
Using infectious disease organisms which have been modified into live but weaker versions or completely killed forms of their original disease, vaccinations are designed to stimulate the immune system of an individual to produce immune antibodies known as "Immunity". In general, it is development of these antibodies which protects individuals from contracting the disease entirely or by causing the disease outbreak to be significantly weaker than it might be otherwise. Booster vaccinations are often required to keep adequate amounts of antibodies circulating throughout the body - These amounts, aka titers, vary from one disease type to another in both the strength and longevity of the titer. This is why some booster vaccines are given more frequently than others and why some are not repeated at all.

This is another parasite which is not a 'worm'. It is a very tiny single-celled parasite that can live in the intestines of dogs, cats, and man. It is seen most commonly in dogs coming out of kennel-type situations (pet stores, shelters, dog pounds, etc.) but its incidence is increasing. Symptoms include intermittent or continuous diarrhea, weight loss, depression, and loss of appetite.
Comprehensive Examination
A full physical examination will be performed to evaluate your puppy and help identify congenital (born-with) problems as well as symptoms of infectious disease. We examine our puppy patients from head to toe for issues such as heart murmurs, hernias, abnormal bones and joints, evidence of fleas, ticks, ear mites and skin mites (mange).

Fortunately, there is a simple, inexpensive and effective way to dramatically reduce or eliminate the risk of heartworm parasite infection in your pet - We recommend the monthly use of heartworm prevention pills all year-round. We also advocate yearly blood testing for heartworms in all of our adult dog patients.

Because low cost promotional pricing is designed to get you in the door, often times it isn't until the pet owner arrives for their pet's scheduled surgical procedure that they are made aware of all of the things the low price quote doesn't cover such as blood profile testing of organ function, IV Catheters and Fluids, or even modern pain relief. In these types of situations, it is at this time the veterinary staff usually covers all of the 'highly recommended' add-ons for your pet's health, safety and comfort available to you as significant "up-charges". This ultimately results in the pet owner feeling as though they've been the target of Bait-and-Switch and taken for a ride.

This parasite is not a 'worm' but rather a single-celled parasite. It is seen primarily in kittens and puppies, although debilitated (ill) adults can also be affected. Transmission occurs by eating the infective stage of the parasite. It reproduces in the intestinal tract causing no symptoms in mild cases to bloody diarrhea in severely affected pets. Diagnosis is made from a fresh stool sample. Treatment varies greatly. Animals showing no signs of illness are sometimes not treated because a mild case is often self-limiting. Pets with diarrhea are treated at home with an oral medication. Severely affected pets may need hospitalization due to dehydration. Prevention involves disposal of all stools and cleaning the pet's living area.

Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
Distemper is one of the most important infectious diseases of puppies - second only to Parvovirus. It is fairly widespread and in our area many puppies may be exposed to distemper within the first year of life. It begins as a respiratory disease, once the virus enters the nervous system, convulsions, twitches, or partial paralysis become evident. Signs include coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite, fever, and discharge from the eyes and/or nose. It is spread through all body secretions and is highly contagious. There is no known 'cure' or reliable treatment other than supportive care for Distemper - It is generally fatal.

We do carry the 4 way Leptospirosis Vaccine (Fort Dodge) and the Lyme (Merial, Recombitek) Although we generally don't use them as Core vaccines.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
A simple example of this scenario would be the Hospitalization of a Puppy with significant Parvovirus Illness. Due to the serious nature of the disease, treatment and level of care required and an average hospital stay of between 4 and 7 days, the anticipated cost of care at the onset of hospitalization ranges between $ 1,000 - 2,000. A deposit of the lower end estimate ($ 1,000) would be required prior to hospitalization and initiation of care.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
A small sample of your kitten's blood will be taken to perform a 10 minute 'snap' test for Feline Leukemia Virus or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus exposure. If your kitten tests positive for either of these two potentially fatal viral infections, we will discuss options for confirming their positive status. This is a very important test for all kittens to undergo.
Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
In North Carolina, the most common form of skin mite infestation is caused by Demodex mites. Demodex, also known as "Mange", can cause areas of hair loss, skin inflammation and erythema (redness), scratching and biting and secondary bacterial infections. Demodex mites are not contagious to humans.

Those include procedures such as; Mass Biopsy / Mass excisions, Bladder / Urethral Stone surgery (Cystotomy), Perineal Urethrostomy, Third Eyelid surgery (Cherry Eye), Entropion / Ectropion Eyelid Surgery, Anal Sacculectomy, Eye Enucleation, Toe, Limb and Tail Amputations, Medial Patellar Luxation surgery. Generally these more complex procedures are reserved for our established clients and patients.
Heart Disease Treatment
Treatment for the adult heartworm infection is both very costly and can result in significant complications. Untreated most pets will develop symptoms of heart disease such as chronic coughing, lethargy, fluid accumulation and ultimately leading to heart failure and death
Periodontal Disease Treatment
With Grade 3 disease, there is extensive supra and sub-gingival calculus build-up. Mobile teeth may be evident due to some loss of bone structure around the roots of the teeth. Some of the teeth will still be salvageable at this stage but some will require extraction to treat the significant periodontal disease.

The final fee is based on the amount of time required to perform surgical extraction of teeth and gingival (gum) surgery as well as additional medical materials needed to perform treatment or medications sent home.
