Built in 2001, the Detentions Bureau is a 104-bed facility that works under the Montezuma County Sheriff's Office. The bureau is responsible for all inmates that have been detained at the Montezuma County Jail. The detentions bureau employs more than 30 full-time sworn and nonsworn officers who perform a variety of roles in the jail that includes booking and bonding, control room, medical care, court security and inmate transport. The detention bureau houses pretrial inmates, parole violators, and inmates sentenced by the county or awaiting transport to the Department of Correction. Located in Cortez, Colo., it supports an alternative sentencing program that oversees inmates granted work release, home detention, day reporting, weekend inmate status and useful public service.
